K'ale

Nirreth watched the blooding green with predatory eyes. She was lovely
beyond words, small sized and brightly glowing. The bronze wanted this
green. He had a vague memory of admiring her before, maybe even
chasing?

Kjarliheth hissed at her suitors, secretly pleased to see so many of
them arriving to the Feeding grounds. And bronzes too, she always
attracted bronzes.

Galerith let his rider down and joined the male-circle.

Fresh from an oiling, Jodeth's brown hide had a nice sheen to it, even
if it wasn't metallic like some.
He was smaller than the bronzes but had enough bulk not to be tossed
by the winds like some of the
blues. Furling his wings, his whirling eyes took in the others who
readied to chase.

P'nal came up beside G'nir, hands in his pockets. Just another day at
the Weyr. This was about the dragons, not the riders.

D'ale and K'ale were sharing a meal when it hit them both at once.

D'ale grinned at his son. "May the best brown win!" The two pelted out
to the bowl to join the group of riders. D'ale knew when he saw the
rider, it was too late to break off now. Torerath was going to chase

"Jodeth too?" G'nir asked his Second with nod of greeting. "She always
attracts a lot of attention."

Aileyan scanned the crowd, trying to spot one particular bronzerider.
If U'kaiah missed this Flight...

Her bronzerider would never miss one of her Flights. U'kaiah had been
buried deep in the stacks of the Record Room when the call came out.
As Kalamath had joined the group of waiting males, his rider took the
stairs two at a time to take his place around the circle. He stopping
only to catch his breath a moment before striding straight across the
open space in which the little greenrider stood. U'kaiah paused beside
her, brushing her fingers with his own, and when their eyes met, he
gave her a hopeful smile. He had always hoped that one day Kjarliheth
would choose his bronze as her sole mate, just as her rider had done.
Kalamath had won her last Flight. Could the trend continue, he
wondered as he left her side to take his place among his competitors.

"Well Jodeth's been getting a big head lately about these things so I
thought
it might be good for him to be showed up. Keep his ego in check," P'nal
smiled
while nodding while he felt the mental outrage of his dragon
subsiding, directing
itself toward the female instead.

It was almost like Kjarliheth had been waiting for Kalamath too. With
defiant cry she shot up to the air. She was fast little green and
gained height quickly.

Galerith was soon air too, big for blue, he was still faster than the
large bronzes.

Nirreth trumpeted his answer to her challenge and launched himself after
her.
Imalkyth shot skyward after the teasing green faster than any of the
bronzes. His recent successes in mating flights spurred him to try
more often than many of the older dragons in the Weyr and the practice
was doing him good. He might not catch a high percentage but he did
catch.

And there was Jodeth, carving out a place for his brown bulk. He was
faster than the
bronzes but more experienced than the young brown. Watching the green
who was ahead
of them, he sought to close the distance. He wanted her.

Kjarliheth darted away from them, taunting them while she flied. Or was it
Aileyan who teased them? It was impossible to say, the dragon and
rider were one.

Feeling the heat, despite the cold outside, P'nal opened his jacket
and let it fall to
the floor. He rubbed his chest, feeling the cool winds biting his
wings as he soared after
her. She was a very good prize and he eyed the others vying for her
attention.
All greens had a pattern, Galerith knew. The trick was to recongnize
it. The blue was playing clever and thought he had found out her
pattern. Kjarliheth relayed to her speed and agility, making sudden
twists and turns. Galerith took a risk, trying to position himself to
her path, but it failed. She suddenly took more height and the big
blue was left far below. He was out of the chase and knew it.

Kalamath was keeping up with the pack with very little trouble. As a
bronze, even in his prime, he was not as quick as his smaller
competitors. He was built for stamina. This green liked a good show
of strength. Twice now she had found him worthy and had purposefully
chosen him. The bronze called to her with all the sweetness his own
mate used to tempt hers. }:Wait for me, my beauty. I will fly you
like never before:{

}; My flight, my choice! :{ Kjarliheth was taunting them all.

Nirreth kept on her wake, managing stay behind despite all her twist
and turns. }: You're a brilliant flyer! :{ he complimented her.
She preened at the bronzes' words, but she was also starting to tire.

}:Choose me lovely one!:{ crooned Imalkyth in his sweet baritone. His
pecan brown hide gleaming with youth and health.

Torerath swooped toward the tiring green. She was so lovely in the
sunlight. Her hide glowed and he had to have her.

All of them were telling her to choose them. Jodeth didn't resort to
begging.
Rather, the brown sought to prove himself. Darting in and out of the
bronzes'
reach, he got closer to Kjarliheth, watching the younger dragon to make sure
he didn't ram into him. His eyes never strayed, though, whirling red that
they
were.

Kjarliheth slipped away from the browns but didn't notice Nirreth. The
Weyrleader's
bronze had anticipated her movement and was waiting. His neck and twined
with hers and he trumpeted with triumph.

Kjarliheth was bit startled but let herself be caught, surrendering to
the mating

lust. He had been clever and deserved the victory.

Kalamath trumpeted his disappointment even as his rider on the ground
roared his
rage at not only being denied the chance to share the mating Flight
with his lover,
but to see her fall into _G'nir_'s arms!

Torerath blew out his frustration and turned back toward the weyr.
D'ale turned and clenched his fists as he held his burn and went back
to his own weyr.

Imalkyth's peal of dissatisfaction went unanswered and he dove into a
highland lake to cool off, while K'ale found willing arms.

Caught in a dragonlust, Aileyan didn't care who it was who swept her to his
arms and carried her away.
