K'sedel

Y'gel walked into K'sedel's office unannounced with a bottle of his
best hard liquor. "It's a boy," he announced with a grin.

"Congratulations!" K'sedel gestured to a chair, even as he looked for a
couple of clean glasses. "Given him a name yet?"

Y'gel blinked as though he hadn't even thought of that, which of
course he hadn't. "Well no actually," he started with a look of
chagrin. "She's been a bit prickly lately so I guess I never brought
it up."

"I'm sure you'll work that out soon enough." Glasses were found and laid on
the desk.

Y'gel grinned and flourished the bottle before he poured two fingers
of the strong spirits into the glasses. Then picking one up he saluted
the mother of his son. "To Briata!"

"Briata," echoed K'sedel, lifting the glass and taking a sip. "And your
son," he continued.

"My son," he lifted his glass in response. "I never really thought
there'd be another." He wasn't quite sure what he really meant,
another child or another woman to love.

"Maybe one day he'll have a brother or sister?"

Y'gel had the good sense to look a little embarrassed. "Oh I don't
know about that. I've asked the girl to weyrmate and she wasn't
interested." He was quite certain this was a one time thing. Briata
had held him at arm's length ever since that one incredible afternoon.

"She may change her mind once she realizes how much hard work babies and
small children are. I really don't know how any mother copes on her own, it
was hard enough for me and Ciara with Radela when she was tiny and we'd both
done it before."

"I hope so," he said and took another sip. "I've been saving this for
a special event," he smiled and lifted the glass. Then his face turned
serious. "I think she's still grieving."

"Everyone deals with loss differently," K'sedel said simply. It had taken
him turns to deal with his wife and unborn child dying during the plague,
and then the earthquake that had destroyed Thayan Peak and his new family.
"Perhaps the child will help her realize that life goes on."

Y'gel nodded. He knew his own heart had remained Liranet's even turns
after she'd gone /between/ with her green. "You're right." he said. "I
certainly hope so," he added after a moment. "I would love to have
them both living with me." He shrugged as if to add 'oh well.'

"Make sure she knows the offer is there," advised K'sedel.

Y'gel chuckled realizing his own shortcoming in that area. "You're
right. I've been a little remiss there." Of course she was still in
his weyr, and in his bed as a matter of fact, recovering from her
delivery.

"And if you make yourself indispensable, she may realize what she'd miss out
on."

"Ah," he grinned. "Good idea! Is that what you did to win the lovely Ciara?"

"We had our moments," K'sedel said after taking another sip of the liquor.

"Fair enough," the big dragon healer laughed and lifted his glass
again. "To the women we love."

"And our families," came the response.
