Description: Dinner Together for the Parents to Be
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 4 of Turn 6
It was dinner time and Briata was meeting Y'gel once more as they often
did. She had to admit his interest in the baby was refreshing. She
knew there were some dragonriders who honestly lost any interest once
they had gotten what they wanted - though obviously Y'gel didn't fit
into that mold and it wasn't _all_ dragonriders. Then there were those
who purposefully went /between/ to rid themselves of children they had
conceived. That made Briata shudder just to even think about. To take
a life, one so innocent and who depended so much upon his or her
mother, it just was unfathomable to her. Y'gel didn't seem to fit into
that mold either and for that, she was grateful.
The baby was getting bigger and she didn't have much longer left. The
child was active as could be and there seemed to be very few moments of
stillness. She managed to sleep through the movements most of the
time, though more recently she had awoken once or twice to particularly
intense practise contractions. They didn't last long nor were they
consistent, but it was obvious her body was preparing for birth. Most
of the time, they were painless, but over the course of the last month,
she felt crampy when they occur. It was merely a sign that she was
drawing to the end of her days as a pregnant woman.
She knew she didn't have to, but Briata knocked upon the door. She
still felt it rude to simply walk in, even on someone she was close
to. So she remained polite and waited til she was given leave to enter
before actually doing so.
"Hi," he said as he opened the door with a smile and ushered her
inside. "There's a nice breeze tonight so I thought we'd have dinner
out on the ledge and watch the sun set." Ledge was really pushing it
since it was really only a single step in some places and two at the
outside edge before you were on the floor of the bowl. But it was very
close to the dragon infirmary and that was his main concern. He walked
around her and held her chair while she waddled after him. Of course
he was wise enough to say nothing of the end of pregnancy waddle.
Liranet had cured him of that one right off.
"That would be just fine." Briata moved further into the weyr, a
sparkle of gold around her neck where Jewel had taken up residence.
The firelizard lifted her head and chirped which spurred Briata to
scritch the little creature's eyeridges. "It's a nice evening. How
was your day?"
"Oh you know how it is the day before Fall." He waved a hand. "We were
stockpiling at all the stations getting ready for tomorrow."
"How are you feeling?"
"Very well. The baby has been moving a lot." Briata lowered her hand
to her rounded stomach and ran it over the dome. "It's hard to believe
so little time is left."
"Activity is good," he said. A gentle smile lit his lips. "There's
something I'd wanted to ask you Briata."
"Oh?" Briata tilted her head and regarded the bronzerider. One hand
rest upon her swollen belly, a gesture that had become an unconscious
habit since she had found out she was with child. "What is it?"
One of the greatest experiences of his life had been the birth of his
daughter Gelira. He knew, no matter how much he might have wished
otherwise, Briata's eyes still turned inwards to her own first love.
Y'gel wasn't blind to that. He knew she dreamed and wished this child
was B'lamick's instead of his. "If you are ok with it, I'd like to be
there for the birth."
Briata haad half thought that Y'gel was going to suggest weyrmataing
again, even if only temporarily. She was glad that wasn't the case
and she smiled. She loved Y'gel, but not in that way. It
was...different. "I am fine with that. I would like you to be there,
in truth."
"Good," he smiled. "Then I will. When is your next checkup?"
"Tomorrow. Would you like to come with me?" Briata was grateful that
Y'gel wanted to be so much a part of the baby's life. She felt it was
important that a child have a father and it seemed a lot of
dragonriders just left their children to foster parents rather than
become a part of their lives.
"Yes I would," he smiled. "What time?" He was feeling very protective
of Briata just now. He knew how hard it could be on a woman the last
few weeks before she gave birth.
"The fourth hour after lunch. My classes are done by then. Do you
think you will be able to come?" Briata knew Y'gel's times in the
infirmary sometimes changed - it was the life of a healer.
"I'll make sure," he said and meant it. He'd move whatever
appointments were necessary to be there for her and the baby. "I don't
have anything scheduled for tomorrow afternoon so other than rounds
everything should be clear.
"Good. Then I'll be glad to have you with me." Briata made a small
motion with her hand. "Shall we eat?"
''Absolutely," he said and pulled the covers off the dishes.
