Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr

N'vanik settled into a chair in the council room. "You have the report
from the Weyrdragonhealer?" Dealing with Cyradis wasn't so bad if he
just stuck to business.
"I do," she said with a nod. They were still feeling their way toward
working together. She slid the document across the table toward him.
"It looks like both Velsia and T'zer can return to full duties. But
N'sen will need another couple of weeks in the Queen's wing. His
Fesarth's wing is much stronger but he needs to be able to fly the
entire Fall."
She figured he could skim to the fresh injuries himself.
He scanned the list. "So overall we'll be at the same strength." He
nodded. That wasn't bad. Not that long ago, not gaining any riders
would have been a bad thing, keeping them understrength. Now they
weren't struggling anymore than any other Southern weyr.
"So it seems, though we do have a class coming close to graduation.
Their blooding's will be soon." She always dreaded that part but all
of the weyrlings training was fraught with danger. These weren't her's
in the sense they'd been Panitath's clutch but she still felt the same
responsibility toward them nonetheless.
"Hopefully there won't be many casualties. I've got my eye on a few of
them." He needed to check with Sh'del for a few last assessments.
She nodded in total agreement. "Do you normally go and speak to them
before the blooding? I know some Weyrs find it cuts down on some of
the rowdy type of injuries. It might make some of them a little more
cautious."
He bit back a response about not sticking her nose in his business.
What she said wasn't unreasonable. "I talk to them a few times during
training. And Sh'del and E'ril have done a good job with them."
She nodded and looked down not noticing his bristle. "Oh that's good,"
she smiled looking at her notes. "I've heard nothing but good things
about the Weyrling staff. I'm sure they have done well by them." She
looked up after a moment.
"Oh I visited with Master Almonteo the other day. We had a visit to
the new Hall. It's really coming along well."
"That's good. Although I'd rather have them stay." He'd miss them when
they were gone.
She gave him a rare smile. "He is quite a man," she had to admit. "I
noticed that they had electricity throughout the new buildings."
"Lucky them." That was the one thing he missed about Dragonsfall.
"Yes indeed," she smiled. Then she tilted her head with a thoughtful
look. "I have an idea that needs some work yet but I though perhaps we
could look at getting some more electricity here at Dolphin Cove. What
you you think? Is that something we could discuss with Emerald Falls
or the Smith Hall?"
"Electricity," he repeated, head tilting slightly. "That ... didn't
occur to me." He'd been so focused on getting the wings back up to
strength that technological upgrades hadn't crossed his mind. "You
think we could hook the whole Weyr up?"
Personally she felt it should have occurred to the former Weyrwomen
but she didn't want to open that can of grubs.
"I'd like to start by talking to Qorri about where it's needed most.
Then with the Smiths to see how they would attack the plan. We won't
be able to get it all done right away but over several Turns, I would
think we would be able to get most of the Weyr hooked up. It will
require some of our resources though so planning is essential."
He nodded. "Not the kind of thing you jump into. It would be good for
morale, too, knowing that we're finally modernizing."
"So you approve then?" She gave him a hopeful smile.
"Yeah. It's a great idea." N'vanik wondered if Cyradis might not be so
bad. A thinker, maybe that's what they needed. Then again, all her
thinking and planning would mean nothing if she abandoned them like
the last two Weyrwomen. **And she hasn't been confirmed yet,** he
reminded himself.
"Alright," she said and her smile broadened. She told herself to take
a deep breath. At this point it was just an idea and she had some
serious work to do before they could even begin. "I'll start working
on the initial plan so we can have an estimate of how long it will
take and how much it will cost. Then our work really starts." They
both knew they'd have to sweet talk the holders who supported the Weyr
into participating in materials, workers, or cost. Then she realized
that right in that moment she'd been thinking of N'vanik as a partner
in this. **Ok, that's not all bad.**
