After they'd finished discussing Wing issues, N'vanik leaned back in
his chair. "Can I ask you a question? Why Dolphin Cove?"

R'enh and N'vanik had been working together now for six months. He'd
come to the Weyr at the beginning of the Turn. Thinking back now there
were a couple of reasons but the main one was clear. "I wanted to
advance and I thought this would be a good place to start."

"Other Weyrs would've taken you. Any reason you chose this one in
particular? Or was it just a random choice?" N'vanik had been thinking
about choices a lot the last few days. Why people chose to come here,
why people chose to leave.

"Okay," he said and leaned forward with his elbows on his knees. "I
like the weather in this latitude. So it was either here or River
Bluff." He tilted his gaze back up at N'vanik's eyes. "And much as I
like Rhosyn, I wanted to do this on my own. You know how she is..."
his voice trailed off for a moment. Then he shrugged. "She would have
helped just because we were friends."

"Yeah, I can see that." N'vanik nodded. "I'm not judging or anything,
I was just curious."

He shrugged, "I wasn't worried." He was curious as well so he asked
the same question. "Why did you come here?"

"Chasing a goldrider." The memory brought a mix of emotions:
embarrassment, sadness, anger.

"Ah," he said noncommittally. He didn't have to ask who. That much he
had learned in his time here. "How did you meet Talryne?"

N'vanik's mouth turned up in a little smile. "Well, we first met
through our mutual interest in casual sex. It might've stayed that
way, but then ..." The smile dropped. "She lost her dragon and instead
of doing something sensible, she came to me. I let her stay because I
felt guilty and sorry for her. Over time we found things in each
other. We were broken, and we fit together."

R'enh nodded. He'd heard of others who found fulfillment of a kind in
another. He knew it could happen even though it had never really
happened for him. There were some he cared deeply for like Rhosyn, yet
he wouldn't want to weyrmate with her.

It was late in the day and he was feeling a little parched. "Got
anything to drink?"

"I could order some klah, or juice. Or ..." He pulled open a drawer
and set a bottle on his desk.

"There it is," R'enh smiled. He didn't use drink to assuage emotional
difficulties but a little party now and then was a good thing. He
stood and grabbed a pair of glasses from the sideboard and set them
near N'vanik. "Fill 'er up."

N'vanik filled both glasses and took one. "So, what do you think of Cyradis?"

R'enh sipped at his glass and thought a moment. "I haven't really had
much contact with her though Mnoranth suns with Panitath from time to
time." Of course any bronze would do that just because they were
bronze. "I've heard she has a good head on her shoulders. What do
_you_ think of her?"

"I think she's more than competent with the hidework and organization.
I don't have any doubts she could do the _job_ of a Weyrwoman." He
sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "But I can't trust that she
won't leave like the other two."

R'enh stifled his outburst, or almost. Then he shook his head.
"Sorry." Then he thought he might as well go for it. "I can understand
why you feel that way. Guess I don't understand why you'd piss her off
like that when we need her here. Unless you have another plan. I
mean... won't that just make her more inclined to leave?"

"I suppose in the back of my mind I was thinking better now than
later." He knew he hadn't handled the situation well, but the worry
was still there. Janani had been in the same position, having to take
over on short notice, and less than a turn later, she was gone.

R'enh shrugged. "Well neither Meledei or Jyramikah are up to the task.
Privately he thought Meledei would be in a few turns but the thought
of Jyramikah as Senior... "Do we know who is due to rise first? "

"We know at least it won't be Elleth since her clutch just hatched.
It's between Ikoladith and Panitath. I should probably ask Cyradis
when she's due rise." He'd like to go on avoiding her, but that was
cowardly.

He nodded. R'enh realized the hard spot N'vanik was in and he wanted
to help without angering him. "Yeah, then you will know if you need to
get in contact with the other Weyrs and bring someone else in. At
least if it's Panithath then you can decide of you want to continue
down this path or try to make nice and come to some sort of working
agreement with Cyradis."

N'vanik knew that was the _smart_ thing to do, but his stubborn side
rebelled at the idea of making nice. "Yeah, I suppose if she's due
soon it would just make the mess bigger if I tried to bring someone
else in. But no matter how mad she is, she's got to realize we can't
have Jyramikah as Weyrwoman so we'd have to try bringing in someone
else." Even Meledei would be a better choice, although he wouldn't do
that to the poor girl.

R'enh had realized many turns in his past that you can't make another
person behave the way you want them to. They are who they are and
either you got along or you didn't. So he skated past the Weyrleader's
lack of acknowledgement of his point. "I'm sure she realizes about
Jyramikah. Who wouldn't. But if you're thinking of bringing in someone
else how would another gold rider be any different than Cyradis who's
already here? Or is it only her you don't trust?"

"Right now I don't trust any of them. Too bad we can't steal Rhosyn."
Now _that_ would be interesting. "I guess I'm not sure if Cyradis
wants it."

R'enh chuckled, the thought of Rhosyn was nice but stealing the senior
gold from another Weyr just wasn't done. "Yeah, but the impression I
get is that Rhosyn would like it if you went to River Bluff." He shook
his head not believing N'vanik would really consider either scenario.

"Maybe we could ask Cyradis if she wants it." Though he knew that was
all wrapped up with N'vanik's decisions about the work she could and
couldn't do.

"I'll ask her after I find out if Panitath is likely to rise first."
He sighed. "Sharding Janani leaving us a sharding mess."

R'enh only nodded. There was nothing more he could add. The situation
was what it was and somehow they had to get through it.
