Description: The Weyrleader visits Cyradis with some questions.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 26 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Rhosyn, Meledei, Qorri, R'enh, Janani
Cyradis needed to prepare for the job of Weyrwoman here and wasn't
getting any help to do so. She knew how to lead the wing. She knew how
to plan for winter, not that that would happen here. She knew how to
work a Lord into increasing his tithes when he had a good year. She
excelled at keeping records and always had. She'd even done the job
before in the north. It was only a fluke of timing that had _her_ (the
woman who would not be named) gold rise a mere sevenday before
Panitath. She had taken everything that day. Her mate, her job, her
weyr.
Months and Turns she'd worked for the betterment of everyone around
her all to have it snatched away. Well N'vanik wasn't going to take
this away from her and she wasn't going to walk around moping until
such time as he came to his senses or Panitath rose to claim the Weyr.
There was a way she could learn some of what she needed to know. So
she went to the archives. She wasn't Harper trained beyond the normal
by any means but she had an interest in experience with research. So,
if she wasn't going to get a leg up and some background of the Weyr
from current leadership she'd find out on her own.
So, she sat in her office with hides rolled and open stacked on her
couch, standing in a basket beside her chair and spread out on her
drafting table. From them and the Weyrwomen who had gone before them
she was building a picture of the needs and requirements of the Weyr
and it's beholden areas. And she was learning of it's history.
N'vanik sighed. Best to get this over with. He knocked on Cyradis's
door and waited for permission to enter.
"Come in," she called without looking up from the document she was
building. Her finger traced a line of figures and her mind worked the
math.
He stepped into her office and took in all the hides spread around
her. "Hi Cyradis. I have a couple of questions."
She looked up slowly then pulled her arms back from where they'd been.
Stifling the retort she wanted to make she took a breath. "Yes? How
can I help you?"
"Is Panitath due to rise soon?" If she wasn't, then they'd have to
talk about bringing another goldrider in.
She kept her voice as even and pleasant as she could. Of course she'd
done the calculations and knew about when to expect it. "She is. It
should be within six to eight weeks."
"So she has a good chance of rising before Ikoladith." It could still
be close though. The Senior Queen leaving could cause any other golds
to rise earlier than usual. "So my next question is, do you _want_ to
be Weyrwoman?"
She simply nodded at his statement but then stilled at his question.
>From her conversation with Rhosyn she knew the Weyrleader was
concerned for Dolphin Cove. She hadn't had the time to really know the
people but from the histories she had been researching she knew a
great deal about what had occurred over the last few turns. She held
his gaze with a steady one of her own. "I do."
He considered her for a moment. "I have to ask, because Janani was in
the same position. Came here as the 'Second, only here a short time,
and then she had to become Weyrwoman. Now she's gone." The obvious
question hung there: would Cyradis leave too?
"I can't speak for her motives," said Cyradis standing and coming
around the side of the desk. "I didn't know her long enough to even
guess what influenced her decision. I can only speak about myself and
I have no intention of leaving here in the foreseeable future."
He wanted to believe that. The Weyr needed stability. "Then I won't
look for another goldrider."
She was still wary but nodded. "Perhaps we can find a way to work
together then."
"I still want you to work with Qorri on domestic duties. I want you to
work _together_." He hadn't made that clear the first time.
She acknowledged his point. "Thank you, Please let _her_ know that so
we're all on the same hide."
"I will. She's a good Headwoman and I don't want this mess to get in
the way of you seeing that. And I'd rather have you spend a little
less time managing all the domestic stuff and a little more time
training Meledei. At least until you're confirmed." The poor girl had
gotten a spotty education and she deserved better.
She gave a short nod. If he'd gone about the conversation this way at
the beginning it wouldn't have gotten quite so nasty. "I'll see to it.
She's got a good head on her shoulders and we seem to do well
together. But I can see where she's lacking in her training and I'll
catch her up. You have my word."
"Thanks." He still didn't trust her. He'd been burned twice now by
Weyrwomen who started off with good intentions and then abandoned
them. Maybe Cyradis would be different, but maybe she'd be just like
the rest of them.
The look in his eyes didn't seem to convey full trust but like Rhosyn
had said it was a matter of time. So she simply nodded. "I'll contact
Qorri tomorrow and begin working with her. You'd be glad to know that
Meledei came up with an interesting idea to try in one of our drills
next week. I'll let you know how it works out."
A smile crossed his face. "She'll make 'Second in a few turns, you
just watch." He was reminded how lucky he was to have Meledei in his
life. And Qorri and R'enh ... Janani had abandoned them, but he still
had good people he could count on.
She nodded slightly. That, at least, was something they could agree
on. She could accept that for now and find a way to work with this
man. "She will."
