It was late when he got the news but he could think of one person
who'd want to know right away. **Ask Orlaith if her's would like us to
visit, we have some news we think she'd like to hear.**
Of course Rhosyn might be busy. It was the middle of her workday so
she might not want to see him immediately.
}:Mnoranth's says he has news. He wants to come:{ the queen bespoke
into her rider's mind. Her tone was curious.
And that made Rhosyn curious. She knew R'enh wouldn't bother her
needlessly at such a time. **Tell him to come on. Drills are almost over.**
}:She finishes drills soon and will wait for you:{ Orlaith passed on easily
as she began watching the sky for her old mate.
The queens' wing was doing a ground drill that day so they didn't have their dragons participating. Instead, the riders themselves practiced the formations. When she felt like they had it down pat, she released everyone and then stood in the Bowl wiping the sweat from her forehead.
R'enh didn't rush since soon didn't usually mean exactly the same
thing to a dragon as it did to a human. But it was still less than
half a candlemark before he glided into the River Bluff Weyrbowl.
Rhosyn saw Mnoranth. Remaining where she was, she pulled a skin of water
from her belt and started drinking. When she was full, she put it back
and sat down on the nearby bench.
R'enh slid from the bronze's back and walked over to where Rhosyn had
seated herself. The heat was a welcome change from the cold of
/between/ and he slung his jacket over his shoulder.
"So," he said. "I thought you'd want to hear this as soon as possible.
But Janani has left Dolphin Cove." He kept his voice pitched low so
there was no chance for him to be overheard.
At first she was happy to see him. When he said what he said, though, a
visible change went over her. Before the look of astonishment turned to
anger, however, she asked the first question that came to mind. "How is
that possible?" A Senior Weyrwoman couldn't leave her Weyr unless she
was unable to fly and complete her duties. Rhosyn knew that as well as
any goldrider.
"I don't know," he said seriously and R'enh was hardly every serious.
"N'vanik is _so_ angry right now," R'enh's own anger paled in
comparison to the Weyrleader's. He and N'vanik had become close over
the few months he'd been at the Weyr. "He can barely talk about it. I
guess he's given Cyradis partial authority. At least she's leading the
Queen's wing. But I take it that interview didn't go all that well
either." Mnoranth had been upset by Panitath's displeasure. So many of
the dragons had, the whole Weyr had been on pins and needles for a few
hours after the event.
"If I was N'vanik, I'd be angry too." Of course she would. Rhosyn listened
to the rest of it, thinking. "It didn't go well? What do you mean?"
"Actually I'm not exactly sure but Panitath broadcast her displeasure
and drove off any of the dragons near her at the time. In any case
neither of them are talking about it and Qorri has taken over managing
the domestic side of the Weyr. There's all sorts of rumors but I take
all that with a grain of salt."
"Hmmm....." That could mean a lot of things. If she N'vanik like she
thought she did, though, he was probably reacting badly to Janani's
leaving and letting that color everything else. Not that she wouldn't
have done the same thing.. "Then what is Cyradis doing?" He'd mentioned
the wing, right..
"Leading the Queen's wing. I don't know what else." R'enh shrugged. He
really hadn't thought all that much about it.
"Well until the next gold goes up, she'll be filling in if I know things.
That means they have got to get along at least up until then. He may not
realize it now, but if he drives her off, he'll kick himself for it later."
Turning to the wingsecond, she found herself thinking. "Have you seen
how she is? Do you think they can work together?"
"I haven't really talked to her much but Meledei seems to like her. I
know she really pitched in since she's been there to get a bunch of
hidework caught up."
"Yeah but there's a lot more to being a Weyrwoman than doing hidework."
Rhosyn absolutely abhorred the stuff, though she did it anyway until
she could find a way to get a harper scribe to do it for her. "But I
mainly wonder if she'll work with _him_." It seemed like he didn't know
the woman that well either. "Listen, see if you can try to get to know
her a bit, feel her out. Let me know in a few days what you think and
if anything changes?"
He tilted his head, "You want me to spy for you?"
"I don't think it's spying. I think it's getting to know a potential
coworker, which you probably need to do anyway. Besides, if Panitath
does fly, it could help Mnoranth's chances." N'vanik knew that Rhosyn
didn't want him to stay at Dolphin Cove. If he wasn't Weyrleader, then
he wouldn't have to.
"Ok," he said, though he wasn't happy about the whole thing. "If I
can, I will." He thought she was being a bit silly about the whole
thing though. Maybe N'vanik was as well.
"Do you need to get back?" If not, she was ready to get out of the sun
and would easily offer him something to eat while she partook.
"No rush," he smiled. He stood and offered her a hand up.
