Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr, River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 4 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Rhosyn
Mnoranth touched down lightly near the entry to the Queen's weyr near
the hatching grounds. She was egg heavy but very beautiful to them
both. He nuzzled her affectionately as his rider walked toward the
inner weyr.
}:Can I bring you a snack?:{
R'enh chuckled and called out "Meledei? Are you ready to go?"
}:Perhaps when yours and mine have returned from the other
hatching.:{ Elleth accepted gratefully with a soft croon to her mate.
"I'm ready!" The young woman called out just before stepping out from
the weyr. The dress she wore wasn't elaborate, but it suited her.
Blue enveloped the young goldrider. Capped sleeves just barely covered
her shoulders, leaving her neck and arms bare as the collar dipped in a
v. The bodice sported an empire waistline with layers of what looked
like petals all over the sleeves and bodice, cascading and only coming
to a stop at the sash that wound around her waist. The skirt was of
the same blue but made of a soft, flowing material that seemed to dance
with every step she took. Delicate slippers of the same colour adorned
her feet and she wore simple jewelry of blue to match. "Thanks for
taking me!"
"Well don't you look lovely!" R'enh smiled at the young goldrider and
taking her hand spun her in a circle. "Mmm" he said with approval as
her skirt flared around her. He was dressed in his own gather finery.
"I'm sure you'll be drawing eyes," he added with a tiny amount of mock
jealousy.
"Probably not with the way the Weyrwoman of River Bluff dresses."
Meledei shook her head. She'd never go _that_ revealing -
that..._slutty_. "Men will probably stare at her all night."
"If it means anything, I really doubt that's the reason she does it."
He smiled. "Rhosyn has a rather unique outlook and it's probably more
about her own comfort in the heat than anything else." He cast another
admiring look at her dress. "You on the other hand are dressed in a
manner to make people respect you and your position." He tucked her
hand into his elbow and strolled into the outer Weyr.
"My dear Elleth," he said with a bow to the queen. "You're looking
very beautiful as well."
Elleth crooned softly in some sort of an answer. "You are a
flatterer." Meledei teased. "You've managed to flatter both me and
Elleth in the same breath. That is an accomplishment."
"I was inspired," he quipped. Mnoranth regretfully left off his
caressing of his mate and put out his leg to help them mount. R'enh
held out his arm to help her climb into her seat on the broad bronze
back. "We should get going."
"Yes, don't want to be late." Meledei pulled her jacket over her and
quickly closed it. It ruined the look, but she wasn't going to
actually wear it to the feast anyway. "You know, I'm probably going to
regret wearing this to the hatching. I should have worn regular
clothes then changed." Meledei made a note to do that at her own
hatching.
R'enh swiftly followed her up into his own seat and they set off on
strong bronze wings. Swiftly jumping /between/
they spiraled into the
Riverbluff Weyrbowl and the bronze rider slid to the ground and then
turned to reach up for Meledei.
Meledei didn't really need help to dismount, but she wasn't about to be
impolite. R'enh offered it so she accepted it. Her hand curled about
his and she lightly stepped down from the bronze who was quite a bit
bigger than her own delicate gold. "Do you remember how many eggs
there are?"
His eyes glazed a moment and then he pronounced "Forty One. But
Mnoranth assures me he flew Elleth very well and she will do better."
R'enh chuckled and led her toward the hatching ground.
"I know he did." Meledei laughed as she slid her arm through R'enh so
he could escort her better. "Still, she's smaller...I'm not sure how
many we can expect."
"I think she'll do just fine," he assured the goldrider. Elleth might
be small for a gold but she was every inch a queen. He watched the
crowds and saw the rider motioning them over to their reserved seats
with the other goldriders and their escorts. At least they would get a
very good view.
"Over there." Meledei pointed out the person who was gaining their
attention. "This is so exciting! Hatchings always are." Meledei did
manage to contain her excitement enough to let R'enh escort her over
rather than doing it herself. "Do you ever take bets on colours?"
"Yes," he chuckled. "But I'm frequently wrong," he said as they
reached their seats among the junior riders from other weyrs. He
greeted the riders he knew and acknowledged the ones he wasn't quite
as familiar with. Then just like that the candidates were marching in,
a crowd of white robes trailing onto the sands.
"There the go. It wasn't all that long ago that I was there." Meledei
remembered those moments as vividly as if it had only been that
morning. "I wonder who will Impress. Which egg do you think will
hatch first?"
"I'll say brown," he smiled. He was rarely right so didn't really have
any hopes of being so this time. The one time he had been was when his
own Mnoranth had split his egg neatly in two and fallen face first in
the sands crying piteously he had moved to try and help but another
boy bumped him out of the way. His shoulders sagged and he turned away
only to have the dragonet bump into his leg. }:Is that the way to
food?:{ he'd asked. R'enh had stumbled and fallen seat first into the
hot sands himself.
"I'm going to say...." Meledei pondered a moment, watching as some of
the eggs were beginning to move. "Blue. If a blue hatches first, that
means a swift group, right?"
"Yes," he grinned back. "And if it's brown it means they'll be
steady." These events always brought back the terror and elation of
his own impression. He knew exactly what the candidates on the sands
were feeling. "Oh look it's starting! And the first one is..."
"Nice!" Meledei wondered what colour would hatch first when it was
Elleth's turn. She really hoped a bronze, but she knew that wasn't
necessarily going to happen. "I wonder what will come next..."
"Brown," smiled the bronzerider. Then another one on the other side
was a green. But the first impression was a blue not even completely
out of his egg. "Swift is right," he grinned.
"Swift it is!" Meledei echoed, clapping lightly as the first dragon
chose is lifemate. "I love hatchings. Just absolutely love them. I
wish they could happen more often." But only golds could produce eggs
and they only rose when needed, so why should she really complain?
"I wonder what Elleth's will be," he smiled down at her and patted her
knee.
