Briata

Things were awkward. Briata wasn't sure what to think of herself now -
nor of Y'gel. She had lain with him, spurred on by the rising of her
little gold, and she had asked him to stay. The next day...she had
fumbled around, covered herself up as much as possible and as politely
has possible told him that she hoped he had a good day. Sure, they
would see each other soon.

Soon...but it had been a sevenday. She'd been avoiding him,
embarrassed, uncertain. Not only was she not sure what to think of
herself, she wasn't sure what to think of him. They were friends,
certainly, but when had it moved into something more? Or had it?

Briata paused in her embroidery and leaned over to rub her hands over
her face. She couldn't avoid him forever. He didn't deserve that, but
she merely wanted to turn a bright shade of red whenever she thought of
seeing him.

Perhaps part of the problem was that she still wasn't over B'lamick.
He was gone. Y'gel was there. But how could she replace him so
quickly? How could she let another man in her bed? Yes, she cared for
Y'gel but...was she really doing B'lamick's memory justice by moving on
so soon?

Classes had taken all his morning and then rounds most of his
afternoon. He'd watched for her to come to the cavern but she'd never
shown up. Finally he couldn't really wait any longer and went looking.
First to the beach where she liked to watch the waves then into the
crafters rooms.

"Briata?"

Briata looked up at the sound of her name, startled at the sudden end
to the silence. "Y'gel...I didn't expect you." She managed a small
smile before she turned her gaze back to her embroidery and resumed
where she left off. "Everything...all right?"

"It's fine for me. I was just worried about you is all." How could he
put it without sounding odd. "You just didn't make your usual rounds
today so I though I'd check."

"I'm fine." Briata tried to assure him. She kept working on her
embroidery. It gave her something to look at besides him - and keeping
her hands busy just helped with the general nervousness. "I
was...planning on going later." When Y'gel wasn't at the infirmary.

Body language could talk as loudly as words when someone recognized
it. What Y'gel saw was a whole lot of discomfort that said to him she
was nervous or uncomfortable. Sadly he figured that meant she was
uncomfortable with him.

He leaned against the doorway. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. He didn't
know what else to say but he'd learned when he was weyrmated that
usually leading with an apology was a good idea.

It caught Briata by surprised and she looked up to blink at the man.
"Sorry?" Her brow furrowed, marring the smoothness of the skin and she
shook her head, which caused a couple of tendrils of ebony to float over
her cheeks. "You've done nothing wrong."

"Oh, I didn't think I had," he started. "I'm just sorry that you are
feeling so uncomfortable about what happened. Not _that_ it happened."
She was incredibly sweet and beautiful and he couldn't believe his
luck in having been there for her.

Briata couldn't stop the pink that rushed to her cheeks. "I seem to be
back right where I started." She sighed and, forgetting her embroidery
for a moment, reached up to rub at her temple.

"I don't want you to change your habits on account of me," he said
softly. Obviously things were a little different now and he was pretty
sure he wouldn't be wanting to keep throwing eligible men in her
direction. He far preferred if she would turn to him of her own
accord.

Briata flushed. It wasn't a habit, finding herself with a man when a
flight came a bout. It just...seemed to happen. More than once. Her
hands clasped together tightly, her knuckles turning white, as if the
colour had drained from them to go to her face. Maybe it was becoming
a habit. Shards, what did that say about her? But then she realised,
that wasn't what he meant. She relaxed a little and reached up to rub
at her brow. "I just...didn't mean for it to happen. And...I guess
I'm just trying to process it still."

"I understand," he said gently. "But we can still be friends Briata.
I'm not going push you into anything you don't want." He really just
didn't want to completely scare her away from the friendship they'd
already developed.

"You are a good friend." Briata couldn't deny that and she didn't want
to lose his friendship. It was just hard feeling completely at ease
after that. It didn't seem to bother him - but she supposed
dragoners...well, they were more used to that. She wasn't. She
reached for her embroidery again, but didn't resume. "Should I...come
by tomorrow? To do the rounds?"

"I'm glad you feel that way," he said amiably. "We'd all love to see
you tomorrow I'm sure." He could see she still wasn't comfortable and
decided she'd probably seen enough of him for today.

"Tomorrow then," he said and walked out to find his evening meal.
