Y'gel sat in his office after his conversation with U'das. He thought
carefully about the issues involved but couldn't find a way to get
around the fact that he would have to discuss it with the Weyrleader.

**Aug, can you please ask Nikornath if his has time to see me? I will
come to his office."

The question was relayed to the Weyrleader, who's response came
quickly. }:Mine says he will be free in half a candlemark, and that he will
have refreshments ready.:{

Y'gel was right on the mark and rapped on the door before walking in.
"Good afternoon," he said with a grin.

"Come in Y'gel." K'sedel gestured to a seat.

He was slightly uncomfortable with the news he had to deliver but
there was an upside that might benefit the Weyrleader and his
lifemate. "How's Nikornath?"

"Settling down in the sun. I think he's probably deciding whether to spend
some time with Orlaith, or Ciara's green."

He nodded with a smile. But then he turned serious and scrubbed his
palms on his knees. "I need to talk to you about U'das or more
accurately, Zackariath."

A looks crossed K'sedel's face, there was a note of surprise, and perhaps
worry in there as well. "There's nothing wrong is there?"

"Only the beginnings of something wrong, and we're trying everything
we can to stave off as long as possible." He was going to do his
sharding best to make sure the Wingleader was able to fly as long as
possible.

"Am I going to have to look for a new Wingleader?" K'sedel cut through the
talk. "Or is it something we can work with."

"For now it's something we can work with." The dragonhealer replied
without hesitation. "Zackariath has developed something akin to
arthritis in the wing joint that was so badly damaged when he was
scored. There's no degradation of his performance but he is in pain."

That was a cause for concern. "How likely is it to impede his performance in
fall?"

Y'gel steepled his finger tips in front of his lips for a moment.
"Right now it doesn't impede him in the least. But that is one of the
reasons I felt the need to speak to you. We can control the pain and
swelling and even the stiffness for a time but eventually..." He let
is voice trail off.

"Eventually we'll need a new Wingleader," K'sedel completed the sentence for
him. "Does U'das know?" he asked.

"He does know about the injury and it's current effects of course. We
have a course of treatment mapped out. Zackariath seems reluctant to
tell U'das when he's hurting though so we may need some help from
Orlaith if he continues."

"I'm sure if you speak to Rhosyn she'll be more than happy to help." K'sedel
sat back in his chair for a moment. "I suppose I'll have to speak to U'das
about how we handle this. He needs to be involved in this."

"Of course," he replied. "You probably should, he and I have already
discussed the treatment and are beginning right away. He's fully on
board. I just felt you should be informed in case things didn't go
exactly as expected. As I would with any rider."

"Thanks for that Y'gel. I have a feeling we'll all have to work on this
together."

Y'gel nodded, "I think we have plenty of time to figure it out, but
better to be prepared."

"Always," agreed K'sedel. "Still, it has come as a bit of a shock, some
pairs you just expect to go on fighting thread forever."

"I know," he said. He Knew K'sedel had to realize that something
similar could happen to his own lifemate in the future. "You let me
know if Nikornath gets the slightest twinge." Then he looked around
the room "Now where are those refreshments you promised?"

"They should be here anytime now. And I might even have a good bottle of
something to go with them."

Y'gel really appreciated the kinds of 'something's' K'sedel provided
on occasion. No sooner had he said it than the door opened to admit a
drudge with a tray. He smiled and watched as the tray was placed on
the desk. "Nice," he said when he saw the bottle.

"A little liqueur I got from the Vintner Hall. They tell me that a drop in a
cup of klah is a good way to try it."

"Outstanding!" Y'gel rubbed his palms together in appreciation.

"Say when," said K'sedel as he unstoppered the bottle and moved it over a
mug.

"Ah, that's good," he said after a moment. Then he swirled his cup to
mix it in a little. The potent fragrance rose on the steam of the hot
klah. He smiled in appreciation before taking a sip. "Mmmm,
excellent!"

"The vintner's have rarely let me down," K'sedel said as he added to his own
mug. "And hopefully U'das won't feel that he's let us down if the time comes
for him and Zackariath to retire."

"Trust me," Y'gel smiled. "They're both fighting it every step of the
way. We'll keep them up there as long as possible."
