Briata

Y'gel crossed the Weyrbowl on his way toward the weavers rooms. He was
not going to let the Weyrwoman down in his appearance. She'd given him
clear instructions about his clothing. Additionally he'd gone to the
leather workers with his best breastplate for some tooling. He wanted
Aughashyth's straps to represent the best of River Bluff. He decided

Entering the weavers rooms he went straight for where he'd seen Briata
the last time he was here but he didn't see her right away.

"Briata?" he called

"Yes?" Briata stepped out of a storage closet that was right inside
the room, specifically for the weaver's needs. It was a small thing,
just shelves as soon as one opened the door, but the door was wide
enough to hide her from view. She reached up, pushing a strand of
ebony hair that had fallen from her braid and teased her brow. The
attempt to tuck it behind her ear resulted in only a tenuous hold.
"Ah, Y'gel." The young weaver stepped away from the closet to draw
closer to the rider. "Is something wrong?"

The strand of hair caught his attention and he almost reached out to
smooth it safely behind her ear. "Er, No," he blinked a moment
realizing how familiar that act might have been taken. He shook his
head and rubbed his nose to hide his discomfiture. "I hear the weavers
have a commission from the Weyrwoman for the upcoming hatching at
Dolphin Cove. I was just wondering if you knew anything about it."

"Actually, I do." Briata couldn't fathom how rumours had gotten out -
she'd said nothing to anyone about it. Perhaps Rhosyn had mentioned
something. "The commission is actually mine. I'll be making an outfit
for her."

"Oh that is excellent!" He smiled at her, "Rhosyn chose Aug and I to
escort her to the Dolphin Cove hatching and she told me to make sure I
coordinate with her. Do you think you can help me with that? I'm sort
of clueless about what she wants."

"I don't mind at all." Briata wondered if there was a reason the
Weyrwoman had asked them to escort her. Did she hold feelings for the
bronzerider? He was very nice and certainly not bad looking. "I can
show you what design she picked out and the colours. We can
coordinate with her outfit if you like."

"I can use all the help I can get," he chuckled. He knew he was
hopeless when it came to this kind of thing and was certainly thankful
he had a friend like Briata to pull him out of the quicksand.

"My sketches are in my quarters." Briata stated apologetically. "If
you'll let me finish putting these items away, I can take you there
and we can look at the sketch and talk about something for you."

"Sure," he said. "Where is that pretty flit of yours?" he asked.

Briata motions up to a rafter in the far corner of the room. There on
a rafter in a corner was a glint of gold curled up. Her head was just
visible and one eye opened as she sensed her pet motioning to her,
then closed again. "Being lazy."

He laughed. "Just like any dragon worth her salt."

"I suppose that's true enough." Another smile, a little brighter than
previous, appeared, but it still did not quite reach all of Briata's
face. "Just a moment." She turned back to the closet, placing more
weaver's items inside, needles, thread. When it was done, she closed
and locked the door, then motioned for the dragonrider to follow her.
Jewel stood, stretched, then angled down to land upon her pet's
shoulder.

He smiled and followed them out of the room and down the hall he
supposed was the way to her rooms.

Briata's pace was quick, her long legs carrying her at a decent clip.
She wound through the hallways taking one turn, then another before
finally coming to an area that housed several quarters. She stopped
before a door, unlocked it, then stepped inside, inviting the
bronzerider in. It was simple, the only adornments a few wall
hangings that brightened the room, wardrobe, desk, chair, and bed all
in simple taste. There was a quilt upon the bed of various jeweled
tones that suited Briata's colouring so well it was a wonder she
didn't have a dress made in those same shades. She moved immediately
to the desk, scritching Jewel briefly before pulling out a blank sheet
of parchment and an inkwell as well as a drawing of the dress she was
working on for the Weyrwoman.

It was not of Briata's style, for it was far less modest than _she_
would have worn, a low cut neckline and off the shoulder sleeves
presenting a lot of skin for those to admire. "This is the dress."
She had coloured it in as well, so it was easier to get an idea of the
look.

His eyebrows lifted, "lsn't it a little... little?"

"Yes. Well." Briata flushed. She had been asked to make changes and
she hadn't _liked_ the changes Rhosyn asked her to do. It
was...skimpy. Raunchy. Frankly, Briata thought Rhosyn was going look
like...like...a whore. And that was not how she wanted people
thinking of her Weyrwoman - she did not want people thinking less of a
woman she thought deserved respect. "It's what she wanted." Which
was why Briata hadn't fought the matter.

Y'gel was hold raised like so many. His luck as a journeyman healer
had brought him to the Weyr and to impression and Aughashyth. Their
luck during training had left Aug flamed and turned Y'gel to
dragonhealing. He hadn't really filled a 'traditional' bronzerider's
role from the beginning, so some of the Weyr's ways were still
sometimes surprising. Of course the thought of Rhosyn in _that_
was... stimulating to say the least. "Well if that's what she wants."
He tapped the drawing. "You're very good. She will look great I'm
sure. But what do you think I should wear?"

"May...I be...frank with you?" Briata didn't want to offend the man.
She fingered that sheet of parchment, then put it to the side, drawing
out another, this one blank, and taking up a pencil, though she didn't
quite start sketching. "I think...you should wear
something...dashing. Elegant." Something that didn't make him
seem...loose...like Rhosyn's dress did her.

"I like that," he said with a smile. He leaned against the table.
"Elegant is a good word, though I'm not so certain I can pull it off."
He looked at the sketch she'd put aside thinking that she was very
good at drawing. "Thats why I came to you."

"I think you can pull it off without any problems." Briata's lips
tilted upward and her hand began to move, broad strokes in a generic
pattern, then quickly filling it in. She began to add details, little
lines and curves that indicated buttons, embroidery, a collar, not too
wide, not to narrow, a little frilled but not feminine. Braided cords
adorned the shoulders and traced a path down a jacket beneath which
the shirt would sport embroidery where it could be seen past the vest,
the collar and the sleeves, miniature versions of the collar with the
same embroidery. It would be fancy without over doing it, and pants
would match, the only embroidery upon the cuffs of the legs, just
enough to be noticed. Alas, she did not have colour upon the page,
but she could see it in her mind's eye, shades of green, though mostly
deep with just a few accents of a lighter shade, coupled with
glittering gold.

He was amazed by the way it just seemed to pour out of her. Her hand
used a simple stroke her and another one there to frame a complex idea
but it came across on the sheet in front of her. "I'm amazed," he said
with a smile.

"Hm?" Briata only half heard him, her mind working out the details,
then translating them on to paper. When she finally registered what
he said, she shook her head. "No. It's not amazing. I've just been
doing this a very long time. My mother taught me...she gave me a head
start." Briata had just never expected to use that knowledge and
skill in such a way. "Is there anything you wish to add or change?"

"No it really is amazing. You draw better than some harpers I've
seen." He smiled. She didn't think it was anything special and yet it
was, at least in his opinion. "You're a talented girl. I can see now
why you decided to become a weaver. There's nothing I would change."
He turned his head this way and that trying to imagine how he would
look in the outfit she had drawn. "This looks like it might be the
same fabric as Rhosyn's dress?" he asked pointing to the vest.

"It can be. It probably will be. I'll have a couple of different
fabrics." Briata's words held an almost distracted air, as if she
were trying to decide what would be best to put where. "I think that
will work." She stated with little additional information offered.
"Does this suit you? Would you like to see something in colour or
trust my judgement?"

"I like it," he said with a smile and then added. "And I trust you to
know what's best."
