N'vanik made his way to the River Bluff Weyrleader's office, feeling
more than a little uncomfortable. When he got permission to enter, he
sat down across from the older man. "Hello K'sedel."

"It's good to see you too, I just wish the circumstances were better,"
K'sedel said as he gestured to a seat.

"Me too." N'vanik sat down. "So what have you heard?"

"Only that Traelyn is sick enough to need a lot of help from mindhealers,
and that they have taken her somewhere to get that help." K'sedel summarised
the situation in a few words, no use reopening what was bound to be a very
sore wound.

That summed it up. "Yeah, with no idea when or if she'll come back."
Although in his mind he'd already decided the answer was 'never'. "So
we have an acting Weyrwoman now, Janani. She's doing a good job so
far."

"And I take it you'll let the dragons decide when the time comes?"

"Yeah. Of course." N'vanik was reminded again that he might not win,
and he wasn't sure he _wanted_ to. "I hope it's Janani. One of our
other goldriders is too young, and the other stepped down from being
'Second. She wouldn't want the responsibility."

K'sedel lifted a jug of iced fruit juice. "A drink?" he asked. "If there is
anything that we can do to help for the moment, you only have to say."

"Sure." A drink sounded good, even if it wasn't alcohol. "I think
we'll be okay. The Weyr's been through worse." Before his time, but
still.

It took K'sedel a moment to pour the cold drink, before he handed it to
N'vanik. "You only have to let us know if you need anything."

"Thanks." N'vanik took a long drink. "You're not ... worried or anything?"

"Not worried," assured K'sedel. "More concerned that gossip could do more
damage than actual events though."

"Yeah, the gossipers are loving this one." N'vanik's tone had a bitter edge.

"If I might make a suggestion," K'sedel said.

"Sure."

"You might want to spread the truth before the gossipers can twist it. Let
people know what's happened and what the future may bring to try and cut
down on the tall tales."

N'vanik sighed. "Yeah, you're right. I should make sure everybody
knows what's going on." The trouble was that talking about it brought
the pain to the surface.

"It might help everyone," K'sedel said. "And if you need to talk about
it, we have some good healers here who can listen."

N'vanik had to keep himself from rolling his eyes. _Everyone_ was
suggesting he talk to a healer. "We've got some good ones at Dolphin
Cove too."

"I'm sure you do, but sometimes it helps if it is someone who doesn't know
you as a Weyrleader or your reputation, then they see you as a person."

"I'll think about it." Which really meant no, but N'vanik was trying
to be tactful.

K'sedel understood a polite 'no' when he heard one, but he'd felt that he at
least had to make the offer. With that, he changed the subject. "Will your
wings be at full strength for fall?"

"As full as usual." They were still short handed, but one large class
of weyrlings should make them equal to every other Weyr in the South.
N'vanik had been hoping that Nyith's next clutch ... no, better not to
think of that.

"If you need any additional rider, you only have to say."

"Thanks K'sedel. River Bluff has always been willing to help and I
appreciate that." It made N'vanik think of the kind of 'help' Rhosyn
had provided and it made him feel a little guilty to be chatting with
her Weyrleader so soon after leaving her bed.

"You would do the same for us no doubt, if the situation were reversed."

"Absolutely."
