So, he knew that someday it would happen, but K'reyel never thought that it
would be today. The door of his office was closing behind him as he sat back
in his seat. Tsaera certainly hadn't minced her words, and there really
wasn't much to say now.
}:You aren't sure what to think?:{ Erdenth commented to his rider.
**No, no I'm not,** admitted the bronzerider. **Can you speak to Nikornath,
and have him ask my father to come and see me, he should hear this too.**
}:I will.:{
A short while later the older bronzerider arrived, youngest child in his
arms. "Sorry," he said, taking a seat without asking. "Ciara is with her
older two, and her foster mother had a healer's appointment."
"Nothing to apologise for Dad," K'reyel managed a grin as he managed a wave
for his sister who was hanging on to a stuffed toy. "But I am glad you sat
down. You'll need to when you hear this."
"Hear what?" K'sedel sounded intrigued.
"Tsaera's just been to see me," said K'reyel slowly.
There was nothing new about that, though K'sedel. A good Weyrwoman needed to
keep in touch with her Weyrleader, it made for smooth running. Especially
when you considered just how big a place a Weyr really was. Some holders had
the impression that there were only riders, dragons and candidates there,
with a minimal staff. But there was the port in River Bluff's case, and
infirmary and all sorts of crafts.
"Was there a problem?" K'sedel hadn't heard of any issues between them. The
Weyr seemed to run like a well oiled mechanism that just needed the odd
gentle check now and then.
"Not with the Weyr." The response took a moment, and K'sedel studied his son
for a moment.
"With Tsaera?"
K'reyel nodded. "She's not sick Dad, relax there. It isn't exactly her."
"Tabarnith?"
"She won't rise again, Tsaera thought I should be the first to know that."
K'sedel was silent for a moment. Like most people he supposed he had just
imagined the Weyrwoman going on forever, but it seemed that the time had
come for that thinking to change. "She's sure?"
"She said Tabarnith was firm about it. She would be due to rise soon, but
Tsaera said Tabarnith hasn't felt her 'signs' and then she just told her she
wasn't going to have a mating flight again. She sounded a little surprised,
but not overly upset. But I don't think she was admitting that to herself
just yet."
"Probably not." K'sedel picked up the toy his daughter had thrown on the
floor. "Has she told anyone else yet?"
"She's on her way to speak to people, or so I believe."
"And the next flight?"
"Well that'll likely be Veyeth. Quite when, I don't know, but I shouldn't
imagine it would be too long." K'reyel looked at his father. "Will Nikornath
chase?"
"He likely will, not that I could stop him with a gold in flight anyway. And
I suppose Erdenth will chase as well."
K'reyel nodded. "I couldn't stop him even if I tried. Mai understands." And
he knew she would, she might not be a rider herself, but she was the
daughter of a Weyrwoman and knew that a flight meant nothing. And if he
lost, then he'd come home to her and seek his comfort with the woman he
loved.
"Then we'll just have to wait and see what happens." K'sedel told him.
"Veyeth will choose."
