K'reyel

K'reyel

Tsaera remembered to knock before she entered the Weyrleader's office.
K'sedel had managed to clear out his things in a timely manner to make room for his successor, but K'reyel looked lost behind his father's former desk.
The walls were bare and there was nothing in there that wasn't part of his job. The Weyrwoman smiled as she sat down opposite. "It's almost time for dinner. I wanted to make sure that you were doing all right with the hidework."

"So far so good. My father took what was his, and what was half done so I could start with a clean slate." K'reyel glanced up at his Weyrwoman. "It does seem a bit never ending."

"I promise, you'll never get your desk entirely clear," she said gently.
"Are you having any problems so far?"

"Not yet, but I never truly realised quite how much there was to do." As Wingsecond, he'd handled most of the routine hidework to do with the Wing, but this was different, it all needed to be read carefully, sometimes twice as far more people depended on it.

"There is always a lot. How are you faring leading Rapids Wing?" She couldn't imagine the transition being easy, not with his own father suddenly demoted and placed as Wingsecond. The dynamics between them would make taking charge difficult, no matter how magnanimous K'sedel was about it.

"It's been 'interesting'," he admitted. Most of the wingriders still looked to his father to lead them, to call out commands and give the signals. In a Fall it was a different matter, people knew their places and how to respond.

"Interesting, how?"

"Well I'd be the richest man on Pern if I had a mark for every time people looked to my father," he joked. "I think the main thing is that they get used to it as well as me."

"There's Threadfall on tomorrow," she reminded him. "Will your Wing be ready to fly, or will there still be confusion? I'd rather ground your Wing and call for assistance from another Weyr than have confused dragonriders in the sky." K'sedel had probably lead the Fall on the twenty-fifth since there had been so little time for the Wing to adjust to new leadership, so this would be K'reyel's first real test.

"We'll be ready," assured K'reyel. "They might lark around a little in drills, but when it comes to a Fall, its a different matter. They do know what to do."

Tsaera frowned. "I certainly hope so - for everyone's sake. But they shouldn't be 'larking around' in drills, either. Either they readily accept your command, or something needs to be done about it. Would transferring K'sedel into another Wing help?"

"It's under control, trust me. A one off, the threat of losing restdays for the next month was enough to make them realise I was serious. And Dad backed me on it. He made sure of that."

"How is K'sedel?" She hadn't seen much of him since Tabanirth rose; she'd been busy, and so had he.

"Spending time with Ciara and their daughter. I even hear he went down to speak with the Farmcrafters at one point, said he hadn't forgotten what his knots were for."

Tsaera smiled, a little wistfully. Perhaps one day she'd be able to do the same... "And Mai?"

"As well as can be expected, with the baby coming so early. She's with him in the infirmary all the time, the healers say he needs watching."

"He must be so small... how early was he?"

"Four and a half sevendays, or so the healers say. He's doing well, though, he can breathe and he feeds, he's just very small."

"I'm glad to hear it." From what she'd heard, K'reyel and Mai had a difficult time of it. Mai certainly had. "Have you found a name for him yet?"

"I like Mayel, Mai likes Marey."

"Both are fine names," Tsaera said, although she preferred K'reyel's choice.
Marey sounded feminine to her ears. "And I'm glad to hear that he's healthy... and that you're settling in. Don't hesitate to ask either myself or your father for help if you're having problems."

"Oh I will, and I realise just how much was off loaded onto me this past turn or so," K'reyel, gestured to the stack still remaining. "I suppose this time at least they all need reading properly, so I can see what can and what cannot be delegated."

"Then I won't keep you. But like I said, if you need anything, I'm right down the hall..."

"I know, and I appreciate you telling me."

The Weyrwoman smiled and headed for the door. "All right. I'm going for dinner. I'll see you later, K'reyel."

"You will," he replied.
