K'sedel

K'sedel

Tsaera knocked but pushed K'sedel's door open before she heard an answer.
Tabanirth told her that Nikornath said he was in there-- and there he was, sitting behind his desk and doing his best to straighten a pile of hides and papers. He'd done quite well with the space; Tabanirth's tendency to be fickle with her mates meant that it usually lacked the live-in clutter that Weyrleaders would accumulate over their term, but K'sedel had brought in a few wall hangings and a sketch of Ciara some Harper had done, cradled nicely in a greening brass frame. "Good morning! I saw your drills today; that new sweep in your second wave, though... I'm almost wondering if your greens are going too low. They'll be getting pretty close to where mine are."

"It's only to give them time to swap out half way through," was the semi-absent reply as the Weyrleader scanned another hide on the pile in front of him. "It's an experiment in drills, won't necessarily be used."

"Fair enough." She handed him the hide she was looking at: a tithe audit from Topaz Sea Hold. "I thought you might want to take a look at this. We're getting in less cured leather than we did last turn, so you might want to pass on to your riders that they'll need to conserve their jackets and straps a little longer, if possible. I'll pass it on to U'das, too."

"Did they give any reason?" K'sedel said as he took the hide. Good quality jackets and straps were relied on more than the holders could understand.
Most of them only saw the sets riders used for gathers, some of which could be quite gaudy, but for Threadfall, plain, durable, hardwearing sets were needed.

"A caravan that was travelling up the coast to collect the skins for processing at the Hold was caught in a deluge. Two of the caravans leaked, and a quarter of the rest started to rot simply because of all the moisture in the air." Tsaera hitched a hip onto the edge of the desk and picked up a hide weight K'sedel had. "Salt is only good for preserving uncured hides as long as it doesn't get wet. You do have a lot of stuff in here."

"All things acquired over the turns," he replied. "Things I use."

She smiled and set the hide weight aside. "Well... Tabanirth is going to rise, soon."

"And you're telling me that perhaps I should be careful how many more things I put in here perhaps?"

"I'm saying that you ought not to get too comfortable," Tsaera replied gently. "Tabanirth hasn't been as fickle as she has been in turns past, but I still..."

"Maybe we should just let her choose," he said with a laugh. "After all, she has plenty of choice." K'sedel knew that while the gold wasn't likely to make a permanent mate of Nikornath, but since she had chosen him several times and that had to go in his favour.

"She certainly does! At any rate, I certainly wouldn't be against having Nikornath fly her again. You've settled in nicely." She was beginning to see the benefits of a long-term Weyrleader; it was a lot harder having to train a new Weyrleader every time her dragon rose.

"It looks like I have, haven't I?" he said as he pointed to the way in which he'd personalised the space. "Not sure what I'd do if Tabarnith changed her mind about Nikornath."

"I'm not sure either!" The Weyrwoman grinned. "But don't you be asking me for help moving if she does."

"You mean I'd have to go through all this on my own?" he joked.

"Ask your son to lift things for you. He's a strapping young lad." Tsaera stood and plucked the that had brought her to K'sedel's office from his fingers. "But until then I'll leave you to your work. See you later, Weyrleader!"

"See you later, Tsaera."
