Description: As the weather worsens, the Weyrleaders discuss what precautions to take
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 3, day 7 of Turn 4
The sky looked bruised and the light had rapidly faded until it looked as if night had come in the middle of the afternoon. The sea was frothed with whitecaps and the river was a dark, muddied stain that ran along the plain below the Weyr. Wind whipped Tsaera's iron-grey hair into a tangle as she stood at the lip of her weyr looking out over her territory. Tabanirth crouched beside her watching the weather with glittering eyes. "I think we're in for a big one," the Weyrwoman said. The wind stole her words and swept them up into the clouds.
}:It does not look as big as some we have seen,:{ Tabanirth replied.
She shifted, rumbling, and stared off into the horizon. }:But it will be large.:{ "Think we'll flood?"
Tabanirth was quiet for a moment. }:I am not sure. Perhaps, if the waves are large enough to push past the delta. I would not worry quite yet. The Weyrlings can be moved if there is a threat, and I will watch over them. Nikornath's rider is worried, though.:{
**I suppose I'd better go talk with him then,** Tsaera turned to go, but a flash of lightning made her pause. Thunder shook her bones and she smiled. She loved storms.
The Weyrwoman left her weyr before the rain hit, and found K'sedel doing much the same as she had - standing at the lip of his weyr and facing down the storm. She came up beside him and stood just out of reach of the rain. "Worried yet?"
"Getting that way," remarked the Weyrleader. "I've seen a few like this in my time at Thayan Peak. It could be nasty."
"Could be. It's the season for summer storms from the sea, and whatever the sea spits up is always- interesting." Tsaera smiled. The rain had greyed out the Weyrbowl and they couldn't see the sea from where they stood, let alone the river or Crafter's buildings. "We should be fine, though. The wind's strong but we've had worse."
"Hopefully things will be okay. I take it we're getting into the routine of preparing for this?"
"'Getting into'?" Tsaera chuckled dryly. "River Bluff Weyr has had severe weather plans ever since it was founded. Unfortunatly for us we're in a prime spot for bad storms and flooding. As long as we have a candlemark or two of warning, we'll be fine. I just hope that we don't lose any animals. Our herds are still a little thin after that beast plague."
"I hope not, it's the last thing we need." He glanced towards the power station that generated the essential energy for lighting. "I take it we'll be shutting that down for the duration."
The Weyrwoman hesitated. "No... no, I don't think so. We'll see how the weather is. If it gets bad enough one of the Technicians will make that judgement call, but that thing is pretty tough."
"Lets just hope it doesn't get that far."
"I'm sure that it won't. And if it doesn't... well, the power's gone out before." She shrugged. "We'll be fine. The Weyr's burrowed deep into stone."
"The Weyrling Barracks, they could be vulnerable."
"We've pulled Weyrlings into the Hatching Caverns before, so if it looks as if they're going to get wet, they'll have somewhere to go.
But the hot Sands make it an uncomfortable place to be when the humidity is high."
"But better and safer for the youngsters and their dragons. Flooding might panic some of them."
"Don't worry, K'sedel," Tsaera said, slapping him lightly on the back. "We'll be just fine."
Outside the rain continued to sheet down, greying the Weyrbowl into obscurity. The Weyrwoman turned to face it; the spray as it hit the rock of Nikornath's ledge was cool against her face. **At least, I hope we will...**
