Description: The eggs do hatch today.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 13, day 20 of Turn 12
Notes: Congrats to all the new hatchlings! The hatching happens late into the evening, so there's a small celebration with light fare for families to congratulate the new weyrlings and adults to get into their drama, but it's too late for a full Hatching Feast.
Not to be outdone by a blue Impressing another girl, one of the larger eggs (and Avicath's favorite) gave one final shudder and came apart seemingly all at once in a shatter of egg shards.
N'kevyn first felt the sudden shift in Avicath's attention, and the hand he'd moved to Aydhan's leg squeezed briefly. He nodded towards the large round egg, "Here we go. Bronze, or just a fat brown?"
"Fat green, just to prove you wrong." Aydhan deadpanned.
The dragon that pushed forward revealed that Avicath's 'junior' was a bronze of a radiant reddish-gold.
"Avicath will be so pleased for the day or two he remembers this." N'kevyn said dryly.
The hatching was in full swing now, another few greens and a vibrant sapphire blue that hopped immediately towards the boys, only to literally crash into them, taking Daltero to the ground with him with a delighted }: Oh, hello! :{ He scrambled to his feet and stood over the boy, peering down at him curiously while his tail whipped behind him. }: Why are you down there? Why are you wearing this awful thing?:{ He whuffed and caught a part of Daltero's collar in his toothless mouth, tugging at the robe hard enough to rip down his chest.
The first brown of the clutch was still examining the boys. He approached Erashren again, this time nudging him this way and that, before moving off again.
The murmur of the crowd drew N’kevyn to the other side of the sands, “Oh, there’s your fourth brown- er,” N’kevyn squinted at the light colored dragon that was picking his way across the sands. He was brassy, nearly golden, enough so that it gave the Weyr pause. "I think that's a bronze."
}: He is a bronze. :{ Tymborikath answered before Aydhan could think to form the question. }: I would have told you about a gold dragonet.:{ She continued adamantly, though she didn't remember ever doing that before. She was certain that she'd just _know_ which one would be gold.
The brassy colored hatchling started inspecting Leoleb, sniffing his way from his feet to his chest before pausing and looking up into his face.
At which point he promptly sneezed before turning away, without much care that he'd just sprayed someone with snot and spit. He trotted away, giving a few boys passing glances, before stopping in front of Akadja and Tathalin.
The reddish-gold bronze approached from the opposite direction, snarling. His wings flared wide and he raised himself onto his haunches. The other bronze's wings unfurled too, mirroring him. He wasn't as big, nor as wide, but his eyes flashed with a mix of angry orange-red.
For a moment, they circled each other-- sharp, jerky steps, wings mantled, necks arched. The brassy dragon hissed and darted in first, delivering a sharp smack of his head against the reddish-gold’s shoulder.
The reddish-gold bronze answered with a wing-slap that sent sand flying. He tried to force his brother away with a shove; the brassy one retaliated with a sharp thump against the other’s ribs. They weren’t trying to kill each other-- talons weren't brandished, yet- but neither were willing to back down.
Finally, the brassy bronze moved to leave, shoulder checking his brother one final time as he stomped away. He did the same to Tathalin, barely giving the boy a second glance as he did. }: Come now, Tathalin. We have no patience for weak minds. :{
The reddish-gold bronze snapped at the other as he passed, then shook himself as if the final shove meant nothing. }: That's how it's done, Akadja. But you, unlike them, recognize strength when you see it. :{
Up in the Stands, Q'vettan's expression darkened.
Away from the squabble, the dull little blue continued his quest. There were no more candidates between him and the crowd now, but he was still looking ahead, craning his neck up to search the faces in the crowd. After a moment, he stomped his feet impatiently, and suddenly there was a stir from the crowd as Cirina began scrambling through and even over the other watchers.
}:There you are!:{ The voice rang through Cirina’s head like a bell, }:I’m Saejith, and I’m very hungry. And my leg hurts. And I’m itchy. And sticky.:{
The brown who kicked his own eggshell earlier made a vtol-line past, rounding around to an unfortunately soggy Leoleb. The brown halted right in front of him and snorted, loudly and wetly, covering him again. His pressed his snout into the candidate robe and rubbed, leaving another slimy patch across the boy's front. Then he took Leoleb's arm in his mouth and shook him-- gently at first, then rougher, until one firm push unbalanced the candidate and sent him tumbling.
}: Look at you go.:{ He said with a rumbling laugh in Leoleb's head. }: Head over knees, is that how the saying goes? Your arms moved like big circles. Hilarious.:{
Finally, the first brown of the clutch returned to Erashren a third time, and the boy felt an intense gnawing of hunger radiating from the dragonet. }: I can't keep looking at them all. You feel the most right. Let's go. :{
The hatching wound down with Erashren leading his dragonet off the Sands. A few more candidates lingered with him, one wrangling an overexcited green and the other a blue that was requiring bribery to take any further steps. All that was left were the spectating dragons high above and Tymborikath on the Sands, investigating one singular egg that remained still and silent on the hatching grounds.
**We knew this one wouldn't hatch, love.** Aydhan gently reminded her. **It wasn't developing like the others.**
She squeezed N'kevyn's hand. "Can you and Avicath take that one /between/, before Tym starts trying to mess with it? I'll distract her at the feeding buckets."
“We can do that. No one will appreciate it if she cracks a bad egg on the sands,” N’kevyn agreed. He gave Aydhan’s hand a squeeze back. “Even with that, this couldn't have gone better. You go greet our little blue family member… and the others of course. I’ll pop in before they have them all cleaned up.”
