Tymborikath took her dear sweet time on her clutching. It'd started in the middle of the night, when the only folks about were the bleary-eyed lower caverns staff who were tasked with preparing breakfast. Aydhan was now one of those bleary eyed people, too, after several nights of interrupted sleep as she checked on the gold throughout the night. Dingus and Citrine were absolutely no help; the brown had aggressively become Aydhan's shadow and the little queen had taken to snoring around N'kevyn's head instead of on that stupidly fancy pillow he'd commissioned just for her.

She arrived in the hatching caverns much later than Tymborikath wanted, an overly large container of klah cradled in both hands as she sat in her beach chair in the dark of the cavern. She'd tried turning on the lights but Tymborikath had gotten mad-- the compromise being dark enough for the gold to be comfortable, but bright enough that Aydhan could at least see what she's doing.

Or. To direct Tymborikath like it was her first clutch.

"Tymborikath, you need to move more between eggs." Aydhan said, "More to the left. Don't drop all those eggs on top of each other."

}: It's fine. :{

"It is not fine. The shells are too soft, they'll get stuck together if you lay them too close to each other." She leaned a little in her chair, frowning. "Kev, is there enough sand on those?"

}: It's fine! :{

N’kevyn was fairly certain Aydhan wouldn’t see him roll his eyes, but he restrained the urge anyway. “I’d think after all these Turns she’d have the hang of things. Avi, why don’t you dig some holes on the other side and tell her how nice the sand is over there?”

}:The sand is nice over here, it’s warm on my scales. She can’t have it:{ Avicath had curled himself into a shallow wallow he’d made near the edge of the Sands.

}: It's mine if I want it. :{ Tymborikath grumbled. She paused in her efforts long enough to pointedly heft more sand over top the latest cluster of three eggs, making direct and unblinking eye contact with her rider as she did.

"I'm doing it for you!" Aydhan protested. "I hope J'nic and Viseya are ready for a huge clutch. The weyrling barracks are going to be chaotic again very soon."

}:Well then it’s good you don’t want it,:{ Avicath said smugly, snuggling down further into the warm sand. }:Because I do.:{

N’kevyn only mostly dodged a spray of sand; it missed his face, but he had to shake it out of his hair. “Good. Imbeth gave them an easy first class. Time to see how much they can handle. Well, what’s your final guess on number? Did Tymmie give you any hints?”

"No." It was Aydhan's turn to grumble. "It's going to be a lot. We're not going back to sleep. Fifteen so far and no signs of stopping. Tym, _please_ move those eggs farther apart. You have the entire cavern!"

“Look on the bright side. We can use it as an excuse to take the day off tomorrow. And not get out of bed at all.” Moving to join Aydhan, he joked, “Maybe she’ll need the whole cavern. Do you think we have enough candidates?” He pulled the klah from her hands to help himself.

"We better have enough candidates!" Aydhan exclaimed. "Don't start that with me. I'll be a basket case at J'nic. I'll have half the Weyr annoyed by midday instead of hiding away in that cozy goldrider weyr."

“Aydhan, there are plenty of candidates. And there will be even more when the search riders complete their next rounds. I was just teasing. We’ve still got a good number of those crafter candidates, don’t we?”

"But then we have to renegotiate postings with the crafthalls!" Aydhan said. She paused for a moment, thinking briefly, "But that's Thiseta's job. I can't be blamed for the scandal of having too many eggs."

“Exacly. It’s not your fault or your responsibility. You just have to manage all of this. For the next month,” he gestured to the dim hatching sands. “And keep Tymborikath from getting bored and wandering away too much. You know Avicath turns the eggs wrong.”

"You'd think if she was so adamant about turning them right, she'd pay attention a lot more." Aydhan said with a shake of her head. "I should request a few of the younger riders or the weyrlings to do short shifts watching the entrance. The kids might stay away just on golden reputation alone, but there's at least one kid in the barracks that never learned fear."

“She just doesn't appreciate Avi’s hard work,” N’kevyn said. “He's actually very good at babysitting. Did you happen to swipe anything to eat? Or just the vat of klah?” His stomach rumbled audibly.

"What, no 'pocket bacon' today?" Aydhan asked, though she rifled through her bag and pulled out a container of nuts. "Come sit. We'll be here a while."

“Pocket bacon requires getting up after breakfast has been cooked. I'll send Citrine with a note to send some breakfast in a bit.” She might even deliver the note. Eventually.
