Avicath had been on his worst behavior that day when Tymborikath rose, pushing through the bronzes and browns even as N’kevyn shoved his way through the riders down below. It had been too long since he’d been allowed to chase a gold, and all that pent up frustration had been funneled into violent determination.
N’kevyn was feeling smug, his contented hum echoed far away by a drowsy bronze tangled around a gold. “They did good today, nice long flight,” he rolled, pulling the goldrider close. “And they shouldn’t start bickering until at least tomorrow. A day of peace.” The smug contentedness practically radiated off of him as he wrapped himself back around Aydhan.
"You _brute_!" Aydhan chided, though she was laughing as she half-heartedly pushed a hand against his chest, "Avicath barrelling in like that. This isn't creating viable breeding variations! Now Barrier Lake _and_ High Reaches are going to be full of Tym and Avi babies!"
“As if you don't like it,” N'kevyn chided, arms tightening against her insincere attempt to escape. “Yes, full of big, beautiful, arrogant Tym and Avi babies,” he agreed. “The other bronzes just need to get faster next time, and maybe a little braver. This was the first time they had to deal with the big bully, next time they'll know.” He sounded inappropriately proud of the aptly named “big bully”.
"They'll all be fatter than Aluneth's weyrlings!" Aydhan groused, though she stretched languidly against him. "We have a massive lake in the Weyrbowl, they run the risk of rolling on in. I can't believe the bronzes let Avicath get away with this injustice. Letting him chase Aberath around the Weyr made him brazen."
“But much prettier, you know Tymborikath has never made an ugly baby,” he appealed to the pair’s vanity, brushing a strand of hair behind Aydhan’s face in a shameless excuse to keep touching her. “Being born made Avicath brazen, it’s why we love him,” N’kevyn said loyally. “Tymborikath is as much to blame, she’s faster than him if she wants to be.”
"You're right, I'm going to give her an earful when she wakes up." Aydhan griped. She leaned forward and brushed her lips against his. "She's going to be so mad when the gifts of herdbeasts dry up."
“Not as mad as Avi is going to be. But maybe it’ll make them try even harder to woo her for next time,” he suggested, tracing lazy lines on her hip with his fingers. On any day, he liked to touch her, the added after effects of a flight made it a compulsion he didn’t even want to resist. “She might have done it on purpose. It’s her first clutch in a new Weyr, and Avi at least is predictable and dependable. He’ll let her let people wander through as she wants and park his rump in the opening when she doesn’t. He listens to her a lot better when there are eggs involved.”
"You're impossible." Aydhan murmured, "She won't remember any of that until the eggs are laid and she's demanding he watch them. Avicath better be just as biddable as he usually is. And she better be as lenient. Faranth forbid Imbeth decides she wants to try and give Tymborikath a taste of her own medicine."
“Avi is nothing but predictable, it’s why we tolerate the ego,” N’kevyn said fondly. “He’ll be the perfect babysitter. He probably won’t bite Imbeth, though, if Tym wants to chase anyone off, that’ll be up to her.”
"Tym shouldn't be chasing anyone! She needs to be on her best behaviour. She better not suddenly manifest a maternal instinct. We have a reputation to maintain." What she had assured half the Weyr was that Tymborikath was 'easy' and 'relaxed" was really 'more work for everyone else'. Work that Aydhan delegated without much thought.
“Remember the time she wandered away for a whole day and Avicath turned the eggs ‘wrong’?” N’kevyn said fondly. “He made me watch him. He did exactly what she did. I’m sure she’ll be her calm, delightful self. And the clutch size will embarrass Q’vettan. But those are matters for another day. I seem to have found myself in the company of a lovely goldrider in a quiet flight room, and I intend to make the best of it.”
