"Tirraze! Welcome to Hurricane!" T'lin pulled his weyrmate's sister
into a hug. They'd just announced the placements for the graduating
weyrlings and the dining cavern was full of cheers and excited
chatter.
Tirraze happily returned the hug. It was wonderful to have someone in
the wing she already knew.
"Thanks for having me." She grinned.
"Well, not that I had any say in it," the older bluerider said, "but I
_would_ have picked you. Have a seat." He moved to sit back down at
the table.
Tirraze sat across from him.
"Riamorth is thrilled to get to fly in a wing with Calaroth. He did
his little happy dance. Nearly knocked me over with his tail, but
we're working on that."
T'lin laughed. "Cal will be happy to have someone to play with. Love
the new hair by the way."
"Thank you! Me, too. Even without how much easier it is to deal with
in a helmet." Tirraze answered the laugh with a joyful grin.
"You seem a lot happier now. It's good to see."
"You know, I don't think I even realized I was unhappy before. Or.
Less happy," said Tirraze. "Did Calaroth shake everything up for you
like that?"
T'lin shook his head, but then he thought for a moment. "I mean, he
did change my life in a lot of ways. Being bonded to a dragon . . .
there's nothing like it. But I wasn't unhappy before."
"You finish any grand schematics lately?" Tirraze wondered.
"Finish? No." T'lin laughed. "I have a terrible habit lately of
starting things and not finishing them. But I have a few that are
almost done. There's one for a smaller, more efficient fan that I'd
really like to get into prototype."
"Ohh, I'll gladly play test subject for that one," said Tirraze.
"Especially if it's got more whoosh than hum."
"We'll see how it goes. With most of the Weyr wired for electricity
now, it would be great to have a fan you can easily move around to
where you need it most. Something small enough to fit on a table but
as good as those big boxy ones," he said.
"One you can move!" Tirraze made a show of fanning herself and
fluttered her eyelashes. "I'm liable to swoon."
The other bluerider laughed. "The idea is to have _less_ swooning from
the heat."
Tirraze laughed along with him.
"Of course, my mistake. I suppose I'll just have to settle for singing
your praises, then."
"So, any plans now that you're a wingrider?" T'lin asked. "Or are you
just going to focus on getting settled into the Wing?"
"Plans? Like big trips? I'm hoping to do a little getaway with some of
my friends, but probably not much farther than the Dolphin Hall. I
should probably talk to them about that, eh?
"Maybe go see Kadira over at Dragonsfall, but by the egg, that's
fraught, isn't it? I could pretend I'm just there to see J'ler." She
chuckled. "But who would believe that?" They were more or less her
cousins. Or. Siblings once removed, maybe. What were the odds she and
Kadira would both Impress blue? "Maybe if I coordinate with A'kades it
won't be such a big deal."
T'lin nodded thoughtfully. "That might be best. Although you _are_
family, sort of, and a fellow female bluerider. Maybe you can arrange
for . . . a free pass or something."
"Maybe I'll just send her a letter and we can both meet up at Rising
Moons," said Tirraze. "I haven't really been back there since... since
we moved."
"That sounds like a good idea," T'lin said. "Let me know if you need
moral support and I'll come along with you."
"I think I'll be all right." Tirraze smiled. T'lin was a sweetheart,
but she did not need to speak to Kadira so badly that she would even
bother with it if she needed moral support to do it. And if she was
going to be too emotional seeing Rising Moons again, they could always
meet at Barrier Lake.
"My brother still treating you right?"
T'lin chuckled and a warm smile spread across his face. "Yeah. And I'm
still smitten."
Tirraze smiled back. If V'rel knew what was good for him, he would
keep it that way. Not everyone was lucky enough to have a T'lin.
"Good."
"Speaking of romance . . ." T'lin said. "Do you have your eye on anyone?"
Tirraze sighed and sat back a little. Last time she had started to
talk about something like this, she was fairly certain she had weirded
out half her friends.
"I don't know. Maybe. I think I'm just... I'm going to keep on the way
I've been going, and whatever happens, happens."
T'lin shrugged. "Fair enough. Just go with the flow."
"Is it weird to think that maybe you want to make out with all of your
friends?" asked Tirraze. "Just to... check?"
T'lin laughed. "Not at all! I've kissed _a lot_ of my friends." He
leaned closer and asked quietly, "Boys and girls both?"
"Absolutely," Tirraze confirmed. "I'm just... a little worried I might
be losing some of them. Like... whatever changed or came up from
underneath when I Impressed is too different for them."
"Aw, I'm sorry." He put an arm around her. "It might not be you.
Impression, weyrlinghood, graduation, and then some of them being left
behind as Candidates . . . it's a lot for everyone and they might just
be adjusting."
Tirraze leaned against him and sighed. She hoped more adjusting was
all they needed. And after they -- Oriene especially -- had given her
so much time to adjust when things had been so strange and
disconnected at first, she owed it to them to do the same.
"I hope so."
