"So, old man, I hear you're at it again," the greenrider grinned as he strolled into his father's office and took up his customary perch on the edge of his desk.
"Less of the old thank you," replied his father.
"All right, over-the-hump man," R'sedel grinned impishly as he picked up a paper weight from the desk and began playing with it absently in his hand, "I hear you are going to be a father. _Again_."
"Aaah, gossip, the only thing on Pern to go faster than /between/,"
remarked his father. He looked up at the greenrider. "Yes, it is true.
Come the new turn, you'll have a new brother or sister to spoil."
"Fantastic," the greenrider smiled as he passed the weight between hands a few times. "You know, here I was lecturing you on the age of your dragon fathering offspring, and all this time it was his rider that I should have been talking to."
K'sedel smiled. "Well these things do happen when people get together."
"Uh huh," R'sedel grinned. "And just how did you and this pretty young thing 'get together'?"
"It was something you would know more about than I," replied K'sedel.
"Her green rose, Nikornath chased."
"Oh, I'm sure Nikornath has caught _many_ a green over the turns," his son said with a roll of his eyes. "Unfortunately, my tastes and Eniidith's rarely match." Well, of course, there was E'laif, but her interest in Asath waned quicker than his interest in the blue's rider.
"Well this time, things just happened as I'm sure you've seen before."
K'sedel didn't feel the need to explain all the details, after all, his eldest was a grown man and a rider himself.
"Yes," he nodded, "it happens. So tell me about her. Is it a _serious_
attachment?"
"I think it could be, it's early days yet."
"It's been a while for you, hasn't it," R'sedel commented as he put the paper weight down and picked up a small seashell to play with next.
"Since Meree died you mean?"
"Yes," his son nodded as he ran his thumb along a smooth spot on the shell.
"She'll always have a place in my heart, we were together a very long time."
"Oh, of course." There were some people who never did leave your heart, after all. "No, I think its good for you."
"I just hope the others think the same way as you do."
R'sedel shrugged. "Why shouldn't they? This is a Weyr, after all."
"We'll see what they have to say."
The greenrider snorted. "Ah, who cares what they say. You're gonna be a father, and if you can fall in love again, well I say its about flaming time."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence. Now, how about you join me for dinner?"
"Well, why do you think I came up here? To talk about your love life?"
R'sedel laughed as he set the shell gently back in its place.
"So, the dining cavern, or my weyr?"
"I thought the whole Weyr was your Weyr, Weyrleader," his son chuckled as he slid off the corner of the desk. "Lets enjoy the perks your station provides."
"And maybe I can persuade Ciara to come and meet you as well."
"Well, if the rumor's are true, you can be rather persuasive." And R'sedel would love to meet the woman who might finally be getting through to his father's heart.
"I'll have Nikornath speak to her green, if she isn't seeing her children, maybe she will join us."
"Fabulous. Well, lead on DaDa," the greenrider said giving his father's shoulder a teasing, but affectionate slap.
