N'kevyn

It was in the early hours before dawn when Tymborikath finally told Avicath that she was coming home. There was nothing else to be done, and the intensity that carried her through the night had finally ebbed into bone-weary exhaustion even though her mind kept racing through what-ifs and what-nows.

Tymborikath watched her every step of the way along the harbor and to their weyr, her eyes a lighter yellow than her hide. She lowered her nose as Aydhan approached, letting her wrap her arms around her big head and squeezing tightly. Tymborikath didn't say anything, but her presence was warm and reassuring. She was here. She would always be here.

Avicath had reluctantly shifted to allow the gold to the front of their Weyr. The big bronze had been doing his best to block her in with his mass, his eyes still whirling anxiety.

N’kevyn stopped his pacing the moment she reached the weyr, but didn’t step outside, gave her the privacy of greeting her gold. The moment Aydhan stepped into the living quarters, however, he was on her, pulling her against him in an almost crushing hug. “I was worried about you.”

Aydhan melted into his arms. His bulk was familiar and warm, and the tension drained away from her shoulders. "I'm all right." She said into his chest. "Tym said you were doing passenger duty?"

“Getting everyone who didn’t belong here out of the Weyr,” he said with a hint of a growl. Never mind that just that morning he had been excited for the Weyr to have guests. “Tym said I couldn’t go find you.” The hug tightened again.

"There were a lot of people around." Aydhan said. The protectiveness in his voice made her smile slightly; the idea of the massive bronzerider looming behind her as often as he could was fanciful and amusing, but also very possible. "Kapera's alive, for now. We'll see how she does when she wakes up."

“Why? Who would want to hurt a Weyrwoman? Have they caught them? If they need any volunteers to drop them from a height….” He didn’t have a deep personal attachment, but his own outrage was stoked by the agitation that still bled over from Avicath.

The big bronze was grumbling as he wound himself back around the gold, putting himself between her and the rest of the Weyr, as if assassins were hiding behind every shadow.

"Yes, we have them. D'kere and K'ran are taking care of it. J'nus is with Kapera. J'nus nearly sent him off the ledge himself. It's for the best he didn't. We have the Charter." Aydhan said, moreso to convince herself. Due process didn't seem good right now. "But that at least means the danger is over. I should be fine walking around the Weyr without Avicath following me like we're weyrlings."

“Who cares about the Charter?” N’kevyn growled. “That assumes he was working alone. There could be more. I’d love it if Avicath was there to eat anyone who tried to hurt you.”

"Can Avicath even hunt any more." The joke came out quicker than Aydhan could process, though she lifted her head from his chest to grin up at him. "He wouldn't eat people, anyway. He didn't even nibble when Aydhara climbed into his mouth." She had been a toddler then and nearly gave them all a heart attack.

“That’s why he needs to be near by you. So it’s an easy hunt,” he wasn’t entirely certain the bronze hadn’t forgotten how to hunt, but he wasn’t yet in the mood to be amused. “Just because he wouldn’t eat our children doesn’t mean he wouldn’t eat someone.”

}:I don’t want to eat someone,:{ Avicath grumbled, }:but surely I could.{

}: Surely. :{ Tymborikath offered, though she too couldn't remember the last time Avicath had hunted.

"Sure, but I expect it's more like Dad's feline. Playing with tunnelsnakes instead of eating them." Aydhan said. "I'd rather have him watching Tym so she doesn't go /between/ in a panic. I'm _fine_, Kev."

“Tym will be thrilled, but he'd sit on her if she even gave a hint of panic,” N’kevyn promised. “I don't understand why Riyanth panicked like that if Kapera is still here. Shouldn't a gold have more sense?” Then again, a gold’s rider likely was less injury prone than another dragon’s. “Can I make you some tea? Wine? Whiskey?”

"Oh, it's a whiskey night." Aydhan said, though she let her touch linger until he was out of reach. "Kapera's fear and panic likely spurred her on." Aydhan said, though her tone was more like a question than a statement. "I thought she was dead, too. A gold can calm everyone else, but it's hard to calm a gold." It wasn't the first time she was grateful that her own gold was almost too relaxed, but Aydhan had no idea how she would have acted in the same position.

He went to their liquor cabinet and poured two generous glasses of whiskey. After a moment, he grabbed the glasses and the bottle and went over to their couch, gesturing for her to join him. “There’s going to be a lot on your plate now. Can I help with anything?”

"Keep the whiskey coming." Aydhan said quickly, then looked thoughtful. "Keep an eye on J'nus. He's not ok. And check in with the wingriders as best you can. Kapera is well loved, and the wings are rallying, but threadfall doesn't stop for us."

“No, he wouldn’t be alright, would he.” As soon as she joined him on the couch, he put an arm around her again, needing to keep her close. “I can manage that, just call me the morale booster. It’s a good thing I’m charming,” it was an attempt at a joke, but he couldn’t quite manage the levity.

"I'm sure N'call and Jayme can handle the Wing." She said as she curled up against his side and took the offered glass of whiskey, "The Weyr will endure. Everyone else in it, though…"

“It’ll all work out. It always does,” that, at least, he meant, and it came out less weak than the joke.
