With Threadfall just few candlemarks away, this would be a fast meeting. However, it was time to select the first trio and group leaders for the junior weyrling class. While everyone led a trio at some point, and group leaders changed periodically, special care was taken for initial assignments. Sometimes, assigning a shy but promising weyrling group leader gave them some confidence to grow into their leadership. Or, not giving a bronze group leadership could signal that the young man needed to change something about his behavior.
With these thoughts in mind, J'nic entered the Weyrlingmaster's office - clipboard in one hand, mug of klah in the other - and closed the door behind him. "Morning K'lvin," he said, taking a seat. "Quiet night?" The greenrider had been off duty overnight, and Raileth had not heard anything, so he hoped there had not been any excitement.
"A rare, blissfully quiet night with this Weyrling group..." K'lvin trailed off. "I hope that's not some sign of a bad omen. I've gotten rather used to their shenanigans by this point."
"I'm sure they'll surprise us again soon enough. Besides," J'nic added, "shenanigans are a good sign of group cohesion. Or, at least, that's what I like to remind myself in challenging moments." It was not the first time he had said something similar. "Now, where do you want to start? With our bronzerider? Or our greenriders?"
"Let's start with A'radess. He strikes me as the type who hasn't shown us all of his potential yet, but when he does, I think he'll turn out to be a fine leader. Let's go ahead and put him in charge of a group," K'lvin recommended.
J'nic nodded, making a note. He liked A'radess. "Looking at our blueriders, what about V'dryn as group leader? He isn't the most athletic, but is well-organized and supportive of others."
"Let's put him to the test. I'd like to see if his organizational skills translate to leadership," K'lvin said. His eyes then went down the list to the next two names. "I don't see either R'bain or L'rin being ready at this point. Do you?"
J'nic shook his head. "L'rin still has a lot of work to do to be comfortable with weyrlife and R'bain is doing fine but pushing leadership on him now would be a lot. How about Casmari or Ketlyn leading? Casmari has settled in nicely," which was a relief, "and I've been pleased to see Ketlyn's confidence grow since Impression.
K'lvin nodded in agreement as he made notes. "Let's make them both trio leaders then and see how they do. I think A'lin should be our other trio leader. Okay, we need one more group leader. It's either N'kayden, J'cello, or H'taysh. Which one should we try this time? We can always rotate through the other boys next time."
"That's a tough one," J'nic thought out loud. "J'cello has been encouraging of the other riders, especially blue and greenriders. H'taysh puts in a lot of hard work, and N'kayden is solid. Why don't we start with H'taysh?" He liked the idea of a greenrider as group leader.
"That sounds fine," K'lvin agreed. "You know, despite the pranks, this Weyrling class has been rather smooth sailing so far."
"They're a good group," J'nic agreed. There was no one he was majorly concerned about; at least not yet.
Since their decision-making process had gone quickly, they had a few minutes to spare. The greenrider shifted slightly in his chair, gathering his thoughts. "To help things continue to go smoothly, there's something I've been thinking about for a few sevendays. I'd like to propose that all the weyrlings speak briefly with a mindhealer at some point. I'm not sure when would be best... maybe before going /between/ the first time? Or before Blooding? Or, maybe it depends on the weyrling. I'm hoping a conversation with me or another mindhealer can help us catch someone who is struggling in ways that could impact their performance. I know we can't save them all," he said somberly, "but maybe it could save someone."
"Let's do both," K'lvin decided. "A visit before /between/ and then again before Blooding. If someone has a particularly rough first Threadfall we can just those individuals do another session."
"Great." J'nic felt a wave of appreciation that K'lvin trusted his expertise. This was not the first time his suggestions had been listened to. He made a note to let the weyrlings before the end of the month. Luckily, first jumps /between/ were not for some time yet. "Anything else we should check in about?"
"Only one more thing, J'nic... Maybe you should consider being my 'second instead of 'third? You've been invaluable." K'lvin raised his hands. "At least think about it, if you will."
J'nic sat in stunned silence as he took in K'lvin's words. He had been in the Weyrlingmaster Third position for over a Turn but still felt new to it. Finally, he said the only words that came to mind: "I will." He had a lot to think about.
