Sareya

Sareya walked into her father's weyr with a pep in her step and a bright smile. Because today she had finally figured out something for herself! If she wasn't going to Impress, at least not yet, then she wanted to do something more than just be a Candidate. And there was a _perfect_ opportunity waiting for her!

"I've decided!" she announced without preamble or context.

"Oh, well, that settles it, then!" D'men did not even pause as he was in the midst of cleaning some of his dishes. Y'rim took one of the dishes and began drying it off, turning to smile at Sareya.

"But...you didn't even hear _what_ I've decided!" she pointed out.

"You haven't told me!" D'men countered again. Of course, he could not read her mind.

Sareya stomped her foot childishly. "I've decided that I'm going to be a dragonhealer!" she announced. She threw her arms open wide as if waiting for a cascade of flowers to shower her.

"That's wonderful, my love!" D'men smiled and pulled her into a hug, which he had assumed was what the arms were about. "I'm so proud of you." Y'rim came over to add to the hug, resting his cheek against D'men's shoulder.

"And!" she said, thought it was a bit muffled from within that hug. "I'm going to have grandma teach me too! Well, I haven't told her that but she's a dragonhealer and who better to teach me than her, right?"

D'men was not sure how that was going to go. On the one hand, he would love that for them. But... he was not sure how Rasme would take it. He suspected she would much prefer it if Casmari had been the one to ask her that. But there was only one way to find out, and D'men was not about to sow any doubt for Sareya over it.

"Who better, indeed!" he agreed.

Sareya pulled back a little. "You're taking this awfully fine, Dad," she said suspiciously.

"You thought I'd be unhappy?" D'men began to fret as he tried to think of what he must have done to give her that impression.

"Parents are always trying to convince their kids that they should do something grand! Like...be Lord Holder or something. I thought...okay, fine, I thought that you'd be a typical parent and tell me to set my sights higher but now I see that you're being Dad and of _course_ you'd be fine with me being a dragonhealer," Sareya said.

"Well, of course, I want you to be happy." D'men laughed. "But what makes you think 'dragonhealer' isn't an ambitious goal?"

"Because it isn't lofty like a Harper and it's messy and kind of dangerous when you think about it because dragons are big," Sareya explained. "But it's not like I can _plan_ on being a dragonrider so I figure this is the best plan I can work on while I'm a Candidate and then I'll have something in my back pocket in case I don't Impress. But I'm pretty sure I'm going to Impress. I've got the bloodline for it!"

"Oh, to have that wishful enthusiasm again," Y'rim teased, lightly ruffling her hair with a proud grin.

D'men grinned back at Y'rim.

"Well, I think lofty is whatever you make of it," he said. "Have you told your mother and Papa yet?"

Sareya made a face. "Not yet," she admitted. "I wanted to tell you first. And if you told me it was a bad idea, then I'd...um...figure something else out."

"Good news, kiddo-- it's a great idea." D'men smiled and hugged Sareya again. "And if Papa says anything different, you tell him to come talk to me about it, and I'll set him straight."

Well. Not /straight/. But she would get the idea.

Sareya giggled. "Thanks Dad," she said. "Give me a few Turns and I'm going to be the best dragonhealer this Weyr has ever had! Well, aside from Grandma."
