Cyradis called the bluerider to her office as she scribbled a note for
him to take to Sunstone Seahold for her. She had an idea she wanted
to keep confidential and to do that she needed someone trustworthy.
T'lin certainly wasn't going to keep the Weyrwoman waiting, so he
hurried to her office. "Weyrwoman Cyradis, ma'am. You have need of
me?"
"Yes T'lin," she nodded. "I need you to take this to Sunstone Seahold
if you would. Please find a Master Smith there by the name of Lorican.
I'd like to meet with him here if he can come with you for a quick
visit."
"I would be happy to carry a message for you, Weyrwoman." T'lin could
feel Calaroth preening at being given a task by the Senior Gold's
rider. Lorican . . . that name was familiar.
"Thank you," she smiled and handed him the note for the Smith. "If
he'd like to return with you I can speak to him today. Or just let me
know his schedule and I'll work it out."
"Yes ma'am." T'lin carefully tucked the note away in his jacket and
waited to make sure there was nothing else she needed.
She looked at him hesitating and lifted an eyebrow along with the
corner of her mouth and then made a shooing motion with both hands.
The bluerider saluted and hurried out. On the way to Sunstone,
he'd been able to place the smith's familiar name. Or at least he
thought so. Calaroth greeted the watch dragon and headed toward the
Gather square. A passing drudge directed T'lin toward the smithy.
"Excuse me?" he said as he stepped in. "Could someone direct me to
Master Lorican?"
A little boy popped his head out from behind an anvil to gape at
T'lin, taking in his knots with awe. His face was smudged with ash,
made even worse as he wiped at his nose. "Lorican? Do you need him? I
can get him. He's my Da now. He's with mama and the baby, but I can go
get him." He stopped before he made to rush out. "Are you a real rider
and everything?"
T'lin chuckled and smiled at the boy. "Yes, I'm a real rider. I have a
_very_ important message for your da. Tell him it's from the Dolphin
Cove Weyrwoman."
"Oh...wow..." Silgan's eyes bulged. "The Weyrwoman! She's almost as
important as Lord Bryvin, isn't she? I'll go get him right away! Just
wait right here." Without waiting, Silgan darted out of the smithy on
short, but fast little legs. He was already loud as he burst into
their home without bothering to check what was going on. "Da! There's
a really real rider at the Smithy!" He skidded to a stop, gasping for
air. "The Weyrwoman wants you or something! He's got knots and
everything! It's important!"
Lorican was in the middle of changing the baby. This was a task made
more difficult by how she'd recently learned to kick her tiny legs and
giggle whenever he tried to do that, clearly thinking it was a hilarious
game to play with her Da. He glanced over his shoulder at Silgan in
astonishment. "The Weyrwoman? Oh - I should..." He looked helplessly
down at Carani.
Marael had followed the boy from the dragonrider to his destination
curious to see what the fuss was all about. When she saw the smith
changing the baby. The teen smiled. "I can help out Master Lorican,"
she said quickly, "at least until your wife returns."
"Oh - thank you," Lorican said in relief, recognizing the girl from the
creche. "Lusilk should be back any moment." He hastily finished changing
Carani and handed her to Marael, gathered his tool bag and warmest
jacket in preparation for a dragon ride, then took a moment to gently
touch his daughter's cheek. "Dada will be back soon, little one."
Reluctantly, knowing the dragonrider would be waiting, he tore himself
away and followed Silgan back to the smithy.
"Master Lorican," T'lin said as the man approached. "I think you made
a sword for my friend Brennault."
The smith's face lit up in surprise and pleasure. "Yes, of course, I
remember that sword well. You're a friend of Brennault's?"
T'lin nodded. "He speaks very highly of your work. Oh, but I'm here on
behalf of Weyrwoman Cyradis." He handed Lorican the note.
Lorican scanned the note, his brows rising in surprise and pleasure.
"Yes, of course - I can come at once. It'll be an honor to work for the
Weyrwoman. Let me just get some designs..." He pulled down some
hide-bound folders from a shelf near the door, then added a roll of
clean hide and pencil and paper for sketching. "All right, I'm ready.
Silgan, can you tell Mama that I've gone to Dolphin Cove on business?"
Silgan bounced on his toes as he peered at what his Da was drawing.
"The Weyrwoman? The really real Weyrwoman?" He turned to face the
rider. "Is her gold super big? Does she roar? Can I see..." His
questions were paused by Lorican's direction and he seemed to shift on
his feet, unwilling to stop questioning the rider, but also knowing
that he had to do what he was told. There was a bit of a pout, then he
brightened. "Can I come? Can I go? I never got to see the Weyr! I'll
be good, I promise, Da! Can I come?"
T'lin shrugged. "I wouldn't mind. I can even watch him for you. I've
got a whole herd of siblings and cousins back home so I'm good with
kids."
"Thank you, Bluerider, that's very kind." Lorican had no objection
himself, but he could only imagine what dire fate he would suffer if
Lusilk found out he'd taken her son to the Weyr without her knowledge.
"You can come if Mama says you can, all right? If she says no, you'll
have to stay."
The boy scampered off to find his mother, apparently not hearing Lorican
calling after him to "walk, not run". The smith sighed, but he was
smiling. At Silgan's age, he'd have been thrilled at the prospect of
seeing the Weyr, too, and he couldn't help hoping that Lusilk would say yes.
