Aviday

**Today? Really? Of all days?** Aviday darted towards the flight
rooms, her hair sticking up wildly as Kobeth crouched near the feeding
pens, hissing at the assembling males around her. Her first important
drill, the time when she was supposed to be proving her worth to her
wing, and Kobeth decided today was the day she was going to Rise?

Kobeth was unapologetic as she snatched at a fleeing wherry, her mind
a jumble of mixed emotions and desires. }: My time! :{

**You could have waited!** Aviday had to catch her breath as she
barreled into the flight room and heaved a sigh. No one had gathered
yet. She bounced on her toes, exhaling as she rolled her shoulders.

Z'ku was going over formation charts when a wave of lust washed over
him. He heaved a sigh at the interruption, but the needs of his dragon
took precedence. He hurried down toward the flight rooms and sighed
again when he recognized the green in the feeding pens. Her rider was
so _young_ and had just been moved to his Wing from the Weyrlingstaff.

}:I want Kobeth. I do not care what you think of her rider,:{ Xemroth
said, his gaze fixed on the glowing green.

Marlath swooped down from the cliff heights and landed among the
gathering males, his determination evident in the proud curve of his
neck and the snap of his folding wings. His usual gentle affection for
the young green had vanished, replaced by the heat of desire. Kobeth was
_his_ mate, and none of these others would have her!

His rider arrived at a run, half-into his riding gear for the wing drill
that he, too, had been preparing for when Marlath had summoned him.
R'fal felt his heart beginning to race the moment he recognized the
green. He wanted to banish the memories of the first time Marlath had
caught Kobeth, to be better, to make it _good_ this time, and his
thoughts were full of all he'd learned since - until he reached the pens
and felt lust wash over him as he began to lose himself in his brown.
**We're ready. We will win!**

Another rider appeared, and the sight of him made Aviday's heart pound
a little faster, despite her already showing a clear preferential
smile for R'fal. When she saw J'ackt take a place in the ring around
her, she exhaled and bounced on her toes. She closed her eyes, took a
deep breath, and let herself join fully with Kobeth.

The little green snapped at the wherry, then took another, shifting
from foot to foot in silent mimicry of her rider's nervous habit. She
eyed the assembled males with a critical gaze, then shrieked out her
high-pitched challenge to all of them before bursting into the air
with a flurry of wingbeats.

With a powerful leap, Xemroth was after her. The other males joined
him in a flurry of wings and only the uncanny awareness of the dragons
prevented them from colliding with each other. Before Z'ku's mind was
pulled away, he spared a glance at R'fal. Well, flights were flights
and dragons chased when they wanted. He'd noticed that R'fal and
Aviday seemed close so it wasn't surprising. He saw J'ackt there as
well, and his last clear, personal thought was that Kobeth seemed to
be attracting every troublemaker in the Weyr.

R'fal hardly had time to be aware of the others around him before he was
one with Marlath, wings pumping and heart racing as he followed the
green ever upwards. The young brown had learned from his first chases
neither to expend all his strength early in the flight, nor to wait too
long and risk a faster, more agile blue or a stronger bronze making a
lucky move before he closed in. His gaze fixed on Kobeth, trying to
anticipate her moves as she soared, twisted and turned in the air,
seeking the opportunity that would make her his.

Kobeth darted quickly up into the air, relishing in her freedom. She
twisted and bent in the air, taking delight in flight without her
rider, enjoying the chill, then the warmth of the air as she dipped in
and out of air currents. The males behind her were forgotten for the
moment as she played in the updrafts and downbursts. But when she
looked behind her and spotted the bronzes and Marlath, she visibly
preened at the attention. Not one but _two_ bronzes! She coquettishly
bent her neck and darted higher, daring them to follow her.

}:Kobeth, you shine so brightly.:{ Xemroth stayed several lengths
behind, knowing he could not match the sharp maneuvers of the green.
}:Choose me and I will fly you well!:{ He watched the glowing young
female closely, ready to snatch her at any opportunity.

Marlath saw the green's attention turning to her chasers and felt a rush
of anticipation. Was it time? There were two blues ahead of him, but his
more powerful wingbeats could overtake them as they followed Kobeth
higher. He drew in a deep breath of the cool air, preparing to push
ahead, but just as he surged upwards he narrowly missed entangling his
wings with another, older blue, coming up from behind with the same
idea. Marlath let out a growl of frustration and swung wide, his wings
beating frantically so as not to lose sight of the chase altogether. He
could still win her!

Zith blocked the young brown with a swing of his body, straining to
follow the little green as she flitted between them. As the green
darted to his left, Zith made a grab with his talons and rumbled in
disappointment as she slipped away with a mocking taunt.

Kobeth was so thrilled at the narrow miss and the playful mocking that
she didn't watch where her wings were going. She nearly barreled right
into a blue, dodged hastily, and found herself right in Xemroth's
eager grip. There was only a slight wiggle of alarm before she crooned
and offered herself for twining.

Xemroth bugled in triumph as he gripped her tightly. }:Lovely Kobeth,
now you are mine!:{ His wings spread wide, slowing their fall and
prolonging their pleasure.

Z'ku mirrored his dragon, arms wrapping around Aviday as he kissed her
with all of his bronze's passion.

R'fal returned to himself with a shock of disappointment, Marlath's
frustrated cry still ringing in his ears. Around him, riders were
walking away, some deflated, others seeking comfort in the arms of the
other weyrfolk who'd gathered, but his gaze fixed on the couple -
Aviday, enfolded in the arms of another very familiar rider, oblivious
to the world, and to him.

"Never mind, brownrider. Come with me..." Someone was clinging to his
arm, pulling him away, and helplessly, all he could do was follow.
