Location: Barrier Lake Weyr

"How are you settling in? Moving has never been my favorite thing,"
K'lvin asked J'nic as they walked together into the Barrier Lake
dining cavern for breakfast.
"It has been strange," J'nic admitted. "It was my first move since we
took in Diara and got a larger weyr about ten Turns ago. And, of
course, my first time leaving Dragonsfall Weyr. However, moving into a
new, beautiful space has helped. The craftsmen have done a wonderful
job. And then, being with Sellek again has made everything easier.
Also," he added, "I hope my next move won't be for many Turns. How
about you? Does this place feel like home?"
"You know, it didn't feel like home at first but... It's really grown
on me. I think I might have always been meant for lake life. I don't
love the beach like those Dolphin Covers, and now that I've been here
I've gotten more accustomed to the milder weather and don't wish to
return to the cold of Dragonsfall."
"Yes, I can see getting used to the weather pretty quickly. And your
girls? Do they like it here?" J'nic had not seen Kylena in Turns and
had never met K'lvin's younger daughter.
K'lvin gave a nod. "They've settled in well. Kylena's made a pack of
friends and of course, Kaliha is too young to know the difference." He
grabbed a tray, thanking the lower caverns working with a polite nod
as he took the hot breakfast porridge and bowl of fruit and headed to
an empty table. "Is Diara going to be joining you here or is she
staying at Dragonsfall as a Candidate there?" he asked.
J'nic filled his tray with fruit, eggs, and a bread roll with a pat of
butter, then took a seat across from K'lvin. "She has no intention of
coming here, but I'm hoping we can change her mind. I miss running
into her around the Weyr. Now we need to schedule visits." He took a
bite of bread, then swallowed it. "I am realizing, though, that I have
mixed feelings about being on the Weyrlingstaff if she's a weyrling.
Have you thought about that with Kylena?"
"I've thought about it," K'lvin said, peeling his citrus fruit. "I
actually think I'd prefer to be her Weyrlingmaster so that I can make
sure it's done correctly, you know? I feel a little ill at ease
trusting someone else to teach her how to /between/.... Of course,
that's assuming she decides to Stand and a dragon chooses her."
"That makes sense. Diara will almost definitely stay there through the
next Hatching. Then we'll see what happens." J'nic finished his bread
roll and moved on to the eggs. "So, what do I get to see today?" It
was nice to be able to catch up, but he was excited to get to work.
"You, my friend, get to see state-of-the-art Hatching Sands. Newly
built. There's even exhaust fans in there built in by the technicians.
Then I'll take you through the Weyrling quarters and then finally, the
most important place, your office." K'lvin shook his head. Exhaust
fans. What would they think of next?
Sellek had not been part of the team working on the fans, but had
spoken excitedly about them. "It's like all the crafters were set
loose to try out all their new ideas. And we all get to benefit from
their work." The greenrider swallowed a final bite of egg.
--
"Impressive, isn't it?" K'lvin said as they stood in the Hatching
Cavern. Everything still had that fresh, new feel and smell to it. He
tried to enjoy it because he knew that after a few more Hatchings it
would wear off.
"It is." J'nic looked around the space, imagining a gold dragon there
with her eggs. "Definitely different from Dragonsfall Weyr. It looks
like two Clutches can fit here if necessary?"
"They can, with plenty of room so that the golds don't kill each other
in the process. It's only a testament to Ashela and Saibra's fortitude
that they kept their queens in check when they were sharing the Sands
at Dragonsfall." K'lvin led the way. "So after Impression, Weyrlings
will come this way." They entered a spacious room with stalls where a
dragonet could be taken and fed their first meals after hatching.
"And then this connects," he showed J'nic the way, "into their first
dormitories where they stay until the dragonets outgrow these little
wallows."
The greenrider followed along, looking around with interest. He tried
to picture the bustling activity after a Hatching. "I'll admit, I'm
really looking forward to those moments right after the Hatching. It
must be exciting."
K'lvin showed the way through the junior Weyrling dormitories, and
then on to the senior Weyrlings first taste of weyr living before
graduating into their own adult weyrs.
"Now, let's get to the best part of the tour - your office." The
bronzerider had led them in a full circle back to his own office,
passed by it, and on the next corner, opened the door to a modest, but
newly furnished room.
J'nic looked at the sturdy oak desk, the chairs for him and any
visitors, and the small, currently empty, bookcase. At Dragonsfall
Weyr there had been rooms he could use for mindhealing appointments.
However, since the start of the Pass, he hadn't needed his own office
space. He looked forward to making this space his own. "It's perfect,"
he said, running his hand along the back of a chair. "How much of your
time do you actually spend at your desk?"
"It depends on the Weyrling groups, honestly. When there's eggs on the
Sands but no active Weyrling classes, I spend more time at my desk.
When there's a new batch of Weyrlings, I spend a lot of time on my
feet, and if I am at my desk, it's to resolve disciplinary issues."
J'nic nodded. He assumed his life would soon follow a similar rhythm.
The greenrider looked around the room again. "I'll add some personal
touches to the space soon, but not today. What's the plan for the
day?" He looked expectantly at K'lvin. He appreciated the other man
letting him ease into the new job but was eager to start feeling
useful.
"I was thinking you might like to start meeting some Candidates. That
way you can already have a good profile on any future Weyrling that
enters the program," K'lvin suggested.
"That sounds great." It would allow J'nic to lean into his strengths:
one-on-one meetings. He would just need to avoid the temptation to
turn these encounters into mindhealing appointments. "I also want to
meet with the Headwoman, since she has some responsibility for
Candidates, and I'd like to develop a good working relationship with
her. This afternoon, can I join you to observe today's drills?" That
was the aspect of weyrling training he had the least amount of
experience with.
"Absolutely," K'lvin said, and then clapped J'nic on the shoulder.
"I'll leave you to it then and see you this afternoon."
The greenrider watched K'lvin leave, then took a seat behind the desk;
_his_ desk. He took a grounding breath and allowed himself some time
to soak in the moment. Then, he got to work making a plan for the day.
