Description: K'lvin interviews J'nic for the Weyrlingmaster Third position.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 10, day 5 of Turn 10
K'lvin wouldn't say things had been _crazy_, but things hadn't
necessarily been smooth either. Without the Weyrlingstaff being at
full strength, it left him being stretched thin trying to see to all
of the different needs of the Barrier Lake weyrlings.
Fortunately, he had a few applicants for some of the open positions.
Albeit, he'd had to pull some strings with different people he knew at
different Weyrs to get the word out.
}:Your next interview just arrived. J'nic of Green Raileth,:{ Xmrenth
informed K'lvin dutifully, while calling out a welcome to the lovely
Raileth at the same time.
**Perfect. After they land, let J'nic know he can come on in.**
The familiar sight of the Weyrbowl appeared below them as J'nic and
Raileth appeared from /between/. As the green circled to land, J'nic
took the time to take a few deep breaths and center his thoughts. He
was looking forward to the interview, and to seeing K'lvin for the
first time in a number of Turns.
J'nic dismounted and removed his jacket, gave Raileth an affectionate
pat, then headed to K'lvin's office. **Here we go. No flirting with
Xmrenth,** he joked.
The greenrider arrived at K'lvin's slightly open door.
"Weyrlingmaster?" he called, not wanting to barge in.
"Come in." K'lvin stood, greeting his old friend with a smile. "I
can't lie, J'nic, it feels weird hearing you call me Weyrlingmaster."
J'nic returned the smile. "Just trying to be professional. It's good
to see you though."
"I appreciate the professionalism... Still feels weird, though." The
bronzerider gestured for J'nic to take a seat. "Xmrenth assures me
that Raileth looks to be in fine condition, so I assume the last few
Turns have treated you both well?"
Complimenting Raileth brought out another smile as J'nic sat down. At
K'lvin's question, he thought about everything that had happened since
the other man's move to River Bluff Weyr. Having both grown up at
Dragonsfall Weyr, they had been friends. J'nic regretted having lost
touch, but was excited at the possibility of being able to work
closely together. "Yes, we're both doing well. And, if you can believe
it, Diara is 15 now and a Candidate. She's also an apprentice healer."
He decided to stop there, not wanting to derail the interview.
This didn't seem the appropriate moment to mention K'lvin's heart
attack, which he had only learned of recently. Instead, J'nic settled
on, "It must be exciting to be here, in a new location, and in a new
position."
"Diara is _fifteen_," K'lvin shook his head. "I shouldn't be
surprised, my own Kylena is twelve." He huffed out a little sigh.
"Time flies." He picked up his notebook, ready to get to business.
"Okay, J'nic, let's go through some of these questions. First, what's
made you decide to seek a transfer to Barrier Lake?"
The greenrider shifted slightly in his chair to help himself mentally
transition to the more formal interview setting. He had been expecting
a version of this question. "As you know, I've spent my whole life at
Dragonsfall Weyr, and I honestly had never thought about leaving.
However, the construction here meant there was a need for technicians,
and Sellek was excited about the opportunity. At first, the plan was
for him to stay for just a few months to help out. But, the scope of
the work is large, and he's finding it very fulfilling. I've come here
to visit frequently and have enjoyed my time here. So, after many
conversations, I've finally been convinced to join him."
J'nic turned from the personal to the professional. "To be able to
work officially as part of the weyrlingstaff, as Weyrlingmaster Third,
would be a rewarding next step for me. I've worked informally with
weyrlings for Turns now: one-on-one in my capacity as a mindhealer and
also giving guest lectures. I feel ready to take on more of a
leadership role in this area."
K'lvin thought J'nic's training as a mindhealer to be the strongest
part of the greenrider's resume. As a former Wingleader, K'lvin
approached being the Weyrlingmaster from the stance of what the
fighting Wings needed out of these youngsters. Having a mindhealer,
though, would allow the Weyrlingstaff to have a higher emotional
intelligence when it came to the transitions that Weyrlings had to
face going from non-rider to dragonrider.
"The time demands of being on the Weyrlingstaff are rather great,"
K'lvin told J'nic. "Having been a Wingleader before this, I assumed
the time demands would be similar, but I found them to be much, much
greater. Weyrlings need you at all times of the day and night, there
are no 'office hours.' Do you think you'll have the time to commit to
being on the Weyrlingstaff?"
"Absolutely," J'nic replied with confidence. "A few Turns ago, that
might not have been true. But now, Diara's in the Candidate barracks,
so I don't have any big commitments."
"Well, I'll be honest with you, J'nic, as soon as I saw your name on
the list of those interested in the position, I wanted you to have the
spot. I think your Turns of experience in the air and your mindhealing
craft, would be invaluable to the Weyrlingstaff here at Barrier Lake.
The position is yours, if you truly want to move here."
J'nic couldn't hide his surprise at how quickly he had received an
offer. While he considered himself qualified, he had prepared to be
asked more questions. It certainly helped that K'lvin knew him well,
and was probably able to imagine him in the position as well as he
could himself; maybe even better. "I don't need any time to think
about it. I'd love to join your team." A wide smile crossed his face.
"I'll have all sorts of questions for you, but most of them can wait.
I assume you want me to start as soon as I can?"
"Absolutely. Once you get moved in and settled, you and I can catch up
on life." K'lvin had certainly had a _full_plate_ of life served to
him over the last three Turns.
"I'll let my Wingleader know today and see what he says." J'nic
expected he would be asked to fly one more 'Fall to give the
bronzerider a few extra days to decide on formation changes. He could
already feel his perspective shifting. After a lifetime at Dragonsfall
Weyr, this would be his home. He couldn't wait to tell Sellek.
