D'hol looked at Sockita, then at Timassa. "What do you want? I'll stay
if you decide that's what you want me to do. Whatever makes you more
comfortable."
Timassa knew the healer would have to put her out to do the surgery but
she didn't let go of his hand. "Stay," she asked pleading with her
eyes. She also held onto her mothers hand equally hard. Looking up at
her she nodded.
Garion nodded to his assistants and they swung a frame with a curtain
to the level of Timassa's breasts. Blocking their view of her and
effectively dividing the room Then one of the journeymen came around
and gave her a measured dose of felis and stayed with an apprentice
watching her and the rise and fall of her breathing intently while the
sound of instruments and low voices faded away and she fell into a
deep sleep.
Time passed slowly for some and quickly for others but finally there
was a mewling sound followed by a loud angry squall. The healer handed
the babe off to a waiting journeyman and delivered the second. Another
squall joined the first though not quite so angry this time, but still
strong. "Two healthy girls," Garion called out while he continued to
work at closing her up.
Sockita smiled down at Timassa's sleeping face, brushing a gentle hand
across her cheek. Then she smiled up at D'hol. "Congratulations."
Just then, two apprentices appeared around the side of the curtain
each carrying a swaddled newborn. They'd been cleaned and checked for
issues. The young female brought the larger of the two bundles to
D'hol. "Sir," she said softly. "This one was born first."
Carefully, D'hol took the bundle and looked down into the face of his
newborn daughter. His eyes misted as he blinked quickly to dispell the
tears. She was so small, so delicate and so very fragile. His eyes
closed as he gently pressed his lips to his daughter's brow.
The other young man stepped forward. "This is your other daughter.
She's slightly smaller but they appear to be identical." He looked
between Sockita and D'hol. "Would either of you like to hold her?"
Sockita gestured to D'hol. "Pass me the first born so you can hold
your younger daughter for a moment." She was eager to meet her new
grandchildren, and also eager for Timassa to wake up so she could see
her lovely daughters.
The apprentice smiled and held the tiny bundle out to the Weyrleader.
"We're almost done," he tilted his head toward the other side of the
curtain. "She'll be able to wake naturally soon."
D'hol very carefully handed the eldest infant to Sockita, then took
the smallest into his arms. His smile was gentle as his hand brushed
over the sticky crown of his daughter. "She's just as beautiful as
her mother. "
"They both are," Sockita said, gently rocking her granddaughter with a
warm smile on her face.
The healer came around the drape with a serious look on his face and
watched the little family for a moment. Then he cleared his throat.
"She's done very well and all closed up. As long as there is no fever
she should recover completely," he nodded to the mother and
Weyrleader. "Do you have any questions for me?"
D'hol pulled his eyes away from his children to address the healer.
"How long will she need for complete healing? What will I need to do
for her and the children?"
"I'd like to keep them in the infirmary for a couple of days until
we're sure there is no infection. That should give you time to arrange
for help. In the meantime we'll care for her and the babies." He
smiled, "Of course you're welcome to visit at any time. After she
returns home, make sure you have someone with her all the time for
about the first month."
"I can watch her while you attend to your duties, Weyrleader," Sockita said.
"You're more than welcome to stay as long as Timassa needs and wants
you with her." D'hol replied, grateful for the offer. Timassa would
feel most comfortable with her mother, he was certain. He turned back
to the healer. "Is there anything else that I need to know for
Timassa's sake?"
Garion shifted as a small glint in his eyes looked at the Weyrleader
and his patients mother. "I would suggest," he managed before licking
his lips. "She not become pregnant again in the near future. I do not
think she is up to carrying another successfully to term." He nodded
to Sokita. "I would be happy to deliver the news if you both preferr."
Sockita's heart sank, but before this she'd thought it likely Timassa
would never want children. Her choosing to keep this pregnancy had
been a surprise. "I think it's best if she hears it from her Healer,
yes."
He nodded at Sokita then tured toward the Weyrleader with a
questioning look. "Sir?"
"I agree. I'll support her completely in what needs to be done. I'll
not have her risk her health. "
"Very well then," Garion nodded. "She should start coming around in
about forty five minutes to an hour. We'll watch her while you two go
get something to eat.''The headwoman keeps sending people to check on
you and tell us your food is being kept warm."
