After receiving permission to enter, R'lor smoothed his tunic one more
time and took a deep breath, trying to ignore the flutter of
nervousness in his stomach. Then he stepped into the office.
"Greetings, Weyrlingmaster K'sedel. My duty to Nikornath."

"And mine to you and Kularth, please take a seat." K'sedel gestured to a
seat across from him on the other side of his desk. "I wanted to talk to
you about something."

R'lor sat, a slight wrinkle of concern forming between his brows.
"What is it, sir?"

"Nothing bad," K'sedel said. "Just some changes around here for the next few
months," he began. "You, and Sh'del will probably feel the brunt of them
initially."

R'lor was even more curious now. "What kinds of changes?"

"I've been asked to lead the Queen's wing in fall for a few months. The
Weyrwoman has been grounded by the healers, and with Kapera now at Barrier
Lake, and Dessa too young and inexperienced..." K'sedel let the words sink
in, R'lor was an experienced enough rider to know what that would mean.

"The Weyrwoman is grounded?" R'lor sat even straighter. "I hope it's
nothing serious." He hadn't heard anything about her being injured.
Then he thought of another reason female riders could be grounded. But
if she were far enough along to be grounded, wouldn't there have been
news? "Hold on, she isn't....?"

"I'm hoping there'll be a happy event soon enough, but for now, that's under
wraps," K'sedel explained. "But it means she needs to take it very easy. So
until then we need to split some of her responsibilities, and some of mine
will need to be shared too."

"If my memory serves, the Weyrwoman is weyrmated to your son, so
congratulations are in order, sir." R'lor gave him a brief, genuine
smile. "I promise to keep it quiet. As far as duties, I imagine most
of the weyrling responsibilities will fall to Sh'del and me." With
taking over a fighting Wing, K'sedel would need to make that his
focus. The idea of taking on more responsibility so soon after his
promotion made R'lor a little nervous.

"Thank you, and yes, it does mean there will be more responsibility to come
your way. For the moment it isn't too bad, but once the next hatching
happens..."

R'lor nodded. "Sh'del and I will be very busy. We can lean on the more
experienced assistants to help us. I'm sure we'll all do our best,
sir."

"You two won't be without support, I'll just have less time to provide it.
But we'll meet nearer the time of the hatching and work out how to handle
things." K'sedel managed a grin. "After all, the current class are beyond
the stage of needing constant hand holding."

"Indeed. We can focus our attention on preparing for the upcoming
class." While he was concerned about handling such a change when he'd
only been at Dolphin Cove a short time, R'lor was already feeling more
at ease with the leadership here.

"I'm sure you'd be able to draft in help from other places as well if you
need it, there's Lightening Wing for a start." The retired riders who were
still young enough and fit enough would no doubt be glad of the opportunity.

"And even some of the older Candidates can assist with things like
hidework," R'lor said.

"And don't forget the weyrling too young for the wings. Use them to assist
and supervise things like bathing and feeding the newly hatched."

"Of course. They're always an essential part of the staff, and will be
even more so now." Some youngsters chafed in the weyrling wing as if
it were some kind of punishment, and R'lor did his best to help them
understand how important their role was.

"If any of them fuss a little, just point out it's good preparation for a
leadership role in the full wings."

R'lor nodded. "It's surprising how often they overlook that aspect of
being part of the staff."

"They will cope," K'sedel reassured him. "But as these are slightly unusual
circumstances..."

"They'll have more responsibility than usual," R'lor said. "After this
is announced to the weyrlingstaff as a whole, I can pull the underage
ones aside to discuss this with them. Emphasize the importance of
everyone stepping up."

"I'm sure they'll work it out for themselves, just don't let them run riot."

"Ah, yes. Some green and blueriders can take a little too much
pleasure in bossing around bronze weyrlings," R'lor said with a little
smile. He particularly remembered a thirteen turn old girl barking
orders at a nineteen turn old bronzerider.

"I'm sure that if it does happen, you and Sh'del can handle it. Plus I'll
still be there to back you up, and if necessary you can call on Cyradis,
Dessa or Rasme to have their gold's enforce an order."

"Of course. I hope it won't come to that, sir." It was a lot to take
in, but R'lor was determined to handle it. He wouldn't be alone, there
were plenty of others to help spread the work around, but R'lor wanted
to prove he could step up, too.

"Good," K'sedel nodded. "Do you have any more questions?"

"Not at the moment." R'lor's mind was already forming various
contingency plans and he needed time to think. "But I'll come to you
if I have any."

"Then I'll let you go for now." K'sedel was sure that the weyrlings would
be in good hands after this conversation.
