Description: D'hol and Timassa listen to their baby's heartbeat
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 7, day 17 of Turn 10
The moment drills were complete, D'hol made his way to the infirmary,
still clad in his flight leathers. He checked the sun, then with
relief, figured that he would be just about on time. Running his
fingers through his freshly cut hair to smooth it from his helmet, he
began to jog towards the building. There were a few brief chuckles
from his wing, but he ignored them in good humor.
He slowed down as he strode into the infirmary and saw Timassa just
beginning to rise as the Healer called for her. "I made it." He
exhaled and walked over to join her, his hand light on her lower back.
"I told you that I'd be able to."
"It was close though," she smiled and headed into the exam room.
"Weyrleader," the Journeyman bowed as they came into the room. "Um,"
he looked between the two of them nervously. "You'll need to disrobe,"
he handed her the gown. "Master Garion will be with you in a moment."
Timassa chuckled and started to do just that. She didn't hide behind
the screen they'd provided but pulled off her clothing and stacked
them neatly on a chair. "I think you scared the poor guy," she smiled
at D'hol.
D'hol watched with interest as she disrobed; he never tired of seeing
her body and with the recent changes, especially the rounding belly,
he found her even more attractive. He picked up the gown and offered
it to her, his eyes fixated on her breasts. "Hmm..yes, I must have. Poor
man."
She took the gown shaking her head as she put her arms through the arm
holes. "You can play with them later," she promised.
Garion cleared his throat outside the curtain. "Are you ready?"
"Yes," Timassa said as she sat back on the table.
"Good afternoon," Garion smiled as he came into the room.
"I'll remember you said that." She'd been too sensitive initially and
he'd respected it, but the changes in them were _very_ alluring. He
looked up as Garion entered and nodded to the Healer. "Good
afternoon." He moved to stand beside the table at Timassa's side,
knowing that his role in this exam would be at most, a minor one.
Timassa was just a little uncertain about the whole process involved
with her exam so she reached for D'hol's hand and threaded her fingers
into his.
"Just lie back," Garion nodded. "We're going to try and see if we can
hear a heartbeat today." He got out his listening tube. He warmed his
hands and opened the drape over her abdomen.
D'hol held her hand gently, cupping it in both of his own. The
infirmaries were always a little too cold for his liking, even in
summer, and her fingertips revealed the chill. He stroked a finger
over the back of her hand and smiled down at her.
Garion leaned closer and closed his eyes while he listened carefully
he moved the instrument in tiny increments until he finally smiled.
"Sir," he said to the Weyrleader. "Would you like to hear this? It's
your child's heartbeat."
Timassa couldn't help but smile up at D'hol. "Tell me what it sounds like."
D'hol stepped forward and bent, allowing the Healer to place the
instrument ends in his ears. He paused, then his face changed as he
looked up at Timassa. "A very fast pattering. A little heartbeat." His
face was very soft, enchanted by the sound. His child. Their child. He
didn't want to pull away from the evidence of the tiny life within
Timassa. He looked up at Garion. "Let her hear it. It's amazing."
Holding the flared end gently in place he nodded to D'hol to put the
listening ends in her ears.
As the pieces settled in her ears, she concentrated and heard the
quick whooshing pulse of the heartbeat in her womb. She blinked
rapidly for a moment. "Oh my," she said wonderingly.
"It's a very good strong heartbeat." Garion nodded. Then he pulled
the tube away and tossed a drape over her knees. "Now for the other
part,"
She scooted down when he asked and laid back while he examined her by
palpating her abdomen and encompassing it with his hands. It didn't
make her comfortable but it wasn't in the least bit sexual.
Finally Garion stepped back and washed his hands. "Looks like the baby
is well seated and growing at a normal rate. You should begin to feel
movement in the next couple of sevendays." Turning back around he
smiled at them both. "I would really like you to be careful and not
/between/ quite yet. You're into your second trimester but with your
age I'd advise against it." He looked specifically at the Weyrleader
when he said it.
D'hol nodded and looked down at Timassa, mildly relieved that it had
come from the Healer and not him. "You heard him. No /betweening/
until he gives the okay." He lifted her hand to his lips. "You, my
dear, are stuck in the Weyr." He winked.
"And with the Hide Work, I'll bet." She smiled up at him. "Thank
you," she added to the Master Healer.
"Yes, thank you, Master Garion." D'hol nodded.
Garion nodded to them both then turned and left the room.
D'hol's smile didn't deny her assumption. Though she'd be grounded, he
couldn't show her favoritism; she'd still have work to do. If he
happened to help her in the evenings, however, it wouldn't be noticed
by anyone but themselves. He smiled down at Timassa and laid a light
hand on her rounding belly. "A healthy babe. That's all I could ask
for."
"Well that and the pair on my chest." She poked him.
