Description: Thayde's apology doesn't go as planned
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 8, day 11 of Turn 9
He's thought about his fight with Enamra all day, and he'd been snappier than usual, he was sure. Thayde honestly hoped that his wife had a good first day as an apprentice and by the time evening rolled around, he was feeling more repentant about the things he had said.
When he arrived home to their quarters that evening, he knew that she was home because there had been a plate of food left out for him on the table. He wasn't hungry. He wanted nothing more than to apologize to his wife and smooth out the fight they'd had that morning. He hoped she was ready for that as well.
Walking into the bedroom, he found her lying down and took off his boots to join her on the bed. "How did your first day go?" he asked, laying a warm hand on her back.
She'd almost been asleep when he'd come in, but as he laid down beside her, she became more alert. Still angry with him, Enamra didn't feel much like cuddling or talking with her husband. "It was awful." She muttered and kept her eyes closed, pointedly turning her pillow to cuddle it instead of him.
"Is there anything I can do to help make it better," he offered, his lips finding her neck as his hand traced down her back and over her bottom.
**You didn't even ask why it was so bad, ** Enamra mentally grumped even as the touch of his lips prickled her skin. She'd started the day in the wrong frame of mind for learning and when she'd gotten to her first class, she was surrounded by children only a little older than her sisters. They all read better than she did and later lessons left her confused and feeling stupid. She didn't know anything about currents, weather, or stars. But it was worse when she'd seen Jalodwyn walking through the halls. The older woman barely glanced at her, but other people had waited and watched as they passed each other by. They'd ignored each other, but it had been a painful reminder of both their argument this morning and the fact that Thayde had brought her back to the Hall. "No."
"Oh come on," he cajoled, hand slipping beneath her shirt to skim over her skin. "Tell me about it."
He knew her body too well for her not to react to his touch. She shivered and felt her skin tighten, then felt a flush of desire that honestly irritated her. Had he forgotten that she was furious with him? But, Enamra didn't pull away, push his hands off of her, or ask him to stop. She never thought to deny him what he obviously wanted of her; she was his wife and it wasn't an option. "Not right now. "
Taking that as a sign that she would talk about it when she was ready, or when they were done, Thayde rolled her to face him and kissed her, apologizing in the best way that he knew how, in a language that they always seemed to have in common.
She was compliant to his desire, but even as he kissed her, she couldn't bring herself to respond ardently. Anger and resentment still simmered under the surface when he began. His touch and kisses were just enough to stir some desire, enough that it eased his way as he began to make love to her. Unlike before, she was unable to lose herself to him; very real hurt held her back from engaging with him fully. But Faranth, he knew where she liked to be touched and how to work her into some semblance of response to the movement of his body, but it wasn't enough to match him. About to abandon her resistance as her own need began to grow and ache for release, soft cries finally spilling out of her mouth, Enamra felt him surge, then go still. Frustration bloomed anew as she felt him go slack over her and he rested his brow against her shoulder. Panting and now just aching with unsatisfied need, she couldn't help the words that spilled from her lips. "Are you finished?"
The words drew him up short. It was a question that Enamra had never asked him before, and the tone of her voice.... Thayde knew his wife hadn't finished, but he wasn't going to leave her hanging. "Yes, but you're not," he began trailing kisses down her torso.
Suddenly, and despite her aching, Enamra didn't want to finish. Hurt, dissatisfied, and suddenly simply exhausted, she rolled away from his lips and onto her side, pulling her night dress down. She'd given her husband what he'd needed and wanted, now all she wanted was to go to sleep. "I'm fine. I'd rather just get some sleep now. " She brushed at her eyes quickly then yanked a blanket over her hips.
Enamra's actions were as effective as a slap to the face. Rolling over onto his back, Thayde's brows furrowed as he went over what had just happened. He'd initiated sex and while she hadn't said no, she hadn't participated very much at all, and then ... **"Are you finished?"** He replayed the way she had sounded, the look on her face as realization dawned on him. She hadn't wanted sex, she had let him, she had waited, she had done her 'wifely duty.'
Had she done this before? Waited for him to finish while he thought they were making love? He had thought that afterward they would be able to talk, he would be able to apologize, and they would be able to work through things.
Rolling out of the bed, Thayde grabbed a set of clean clothing and padded from the room.
Enamra lifted her head to watch him leave and fresh tears sprang to her eyes. He was probably leaving to sneak off, hold his baby, and not come back until the wee hours of the morning again. Pounding her pillow, she sniffled and began to softly cry out her anger and frustration into the soft fluffy mass. This time she wouldn't follow and she wouldn't stay up to wait on him. If he didn't care how she felt, then there was absolutely nothing she could do about it.
