D'hol

D'hol

K'lvin stood in the dragon infirmary, hands on hips, surveying the
work that had been done and admiring the craftsmanship of the vaulted
ceilings and weyrcouches. The medical station located in the center of
the infirmary was going to be extremely handy for getting supplies
quickly when they had emergencies.

}:Yumath's rider would like to speak with you.:{ Xmrenth reported.

**The Weyrleader.** K'lvin thought with a touch of surprise. **Tell
him I am on my way.** The bronzerider left the dragon infirmary and
went to the Weyrleader's office, which was finally occupied after
being empty for the first few months.

"You wanted to see me, sir?"

D'hol looked up and waved K'lvin in. "Come in please, K'lvin. I wanted
to talk over some things with you. Have a seat, this might take a bit
of time."

K'lvin couldn't imagine what it might be that D'hol wanted. Before
Riyanth had risen, K'lvin had mostly just reported to K'ran, since he
wasn't in a fighting Wing. The bronzerider took the seat across from
the new Weyrleader. "I'll help however I can," he said.

"Good. That's what I'd hoped to hear. You've done very well at the
infirmary so far, and I've heard that you're very competent in both
practice and with teaching the journeymen and apprentices were have.
We need that, especially for our dragons." D'hol leaned forward,
resting his elbows on his desk. "But, I need you somewhere else, if
you're willing to assist in finding a replacement for the infirmary. "

Leave the dragon infirmary? K'lvin could not imagine where else D'hol
would want him to be since he was a dragonhealer by craft. "Well, you
have my attention."

"You can teach, K'lvin. You're good with young people and dragons.
You're much more patient than most of us and you know the dangers we
face first hand and through hard experience. Riyanth will be clutching
soon and we're starting to need to Search. " D'hol rose, taking two
cups and filling them with klah. He handed one to K'lvin. "I want you
to be Weyrlingmaster."

K'lvin's eyebrows flew up. It was the last thing he had expected. "Me?
I've never worked with Weyrlings before. I thought you would want
someone like... K'ran. Or, I don't know, an un-retired rider."

"You haven't, true, but you've worked with apprentices and journeymen.
I've watched you and heard reports. Your patient, but firm with them.
The Weyrlings will need that. And if I may be completely honest, we
need every single rider that isn't retired up in the wings. I need
K'ran as a Wingleader. Your bronze can still flame and he's got the
will and desire to lead, but he'll just be leading the young. He's not
doing anything while you're in the infirmary and he can be just as
useful to the Weyrlings."

The bronzerider considered that, rubbing a hand over the stubble on
his chin as he thought. As Weyrlingmaster he would only need to
occasionally fly 'fall, mostly just to supervise Weyrlings as they
delivered firestone or when they had their blooding, it wasn't the
same grueling workload he had been putting in as a Wingleader at River
Bluff. Yet he could not make a decision until.... "I can't answer you
today, Weyrleader. There's a certain greenrider at Dolphin Cove that I
need to consult with first. When I came to Barrier Lake I told her it
was temporary until things were up and running."

D'hol leaned back, arching a brow, then drummed his fingers over his
desk. " Weyrmate?"

"No. Not yet, anyway," although K'lvin wasn't opposed to it, "but
perhaps never if I up and decide to live here permanently without
discussing it with her first. I made the mistake of thinking that I
didn't need her in my life once before and those were the worst months
of my life. I'm not eager to repeat that."

D'hol held up his hands. "Been weyrmated and it didn't do well, so I
can't comment on that matter. " Communication hadn't been his strong
point. "So, I'll give you until Riyanth clutches to decide. I can't
wait much longer than that."

"That's fair, although I'll try to have you an answer within the next
couple of days." K'lvin was due a Riveenata visit. It had gotten so
bad he sometimes woke up thinking he could smell her scent next to
him. If that wasn't crazy and lovesick, he didn't know what was. "If
she is agreeable, I'd be honored to take the job." The thought of
having purpose again was too tempting to pass up... unless Riveenata
said no, of course.

"I can live with that." D'hol rouser and offered his hand. " I hope
you agree to take it on. "

K'lvin stood and shook D'hol's hand, "Thank you, sir."
