Jayzine

Saying goodbye to Cyradis and Kielya and Dheymin had been the most painful part of
leaving Dolphin's Cove; the ache in his stomach from going /between/
was nothing compared to the ache in his chest, despite his internal
excitement about starting this new venture. Still a Wingleader for
now, his eyes were on the prize...Yumath catching the future senior
queen. He believed now that it was a distinct possibility. But even
should it not happen, he'd still be leading a wing.

As Yumath landed in the open field, laden with his belongings, D'hol
pulled off his riding helmet to examine the changing surroundings.
Buildings were being erected, some he could already see a purpose for,
but some it was still uncertain. Already, his mind began to work,
studying, evaluating, generating ideas.

}: Interesting. :{ Yumath too was interested, picking up from D'hol's
memories that they had done things like this before. }: It is not as
warm, but it is pleasant.:{ The big bronze looked over his new home as
well, sniffing the air with interest.

"Wingleader," a young man called trotting toward him. "The headwoman
wanted to meet you personally but she's inside the caverns at the
moment. I've sent someone to get her and she should be here shortly.
In the meantime would you like to come into the dining hall for some
refreshments?"

"That would be good, thank you." Tucking the riding helmet under his
arm, he gestured for the young man to lead the way. "And are you one
of her assistants?" D'hol followed the young man, inhaling the scents
of freshly cut wood, burning forges, and the scents of someone
processing numbweed. It was the smell of construction that he knew
well, and the activity he saw around the area met with inner approval.

"Actually My Lord," he chuckled. "I'm a journeyman Woodsmith. But I
think that she feels we're all her assistants." He chuckled. "I'm
Silpen, My father is the Project manager Bilpen. Mother's running the
kitchens just now or at least until the Headwoman finds her more
help." He swung into the main dining hall where there was a least one
shift of workers eating and a wide array of food on the buffet tables.
"Ma will make anything you'd like if you don't see something to your
taste. I'll just go find the Headwoman for you."

"Ah, well, pleasure to meet you, Journeyman Silpen. I've heard good
things of your father and his efficiency." He stepped into the new
dining hall and was met by the succulent smells of cooked food and the
scent of freshly milled lumber and oils. But despite the pleasantness
of the aroma, he'd already had his dinner before he'd left Dolphins
Cove and the change in the hours meant that this was mostly likely
lunch; he would have to get adjusted to the time change quickly.
"Thank you, SIlpen." He looked at the assembled workers, none were
riders according to their knots, but looked well-fed and eager, though
a bit tired, he imagined. Building something on the scale of a Weyr,
or even a Weyrhold, was exhausting, but rewarding work. So he took a
seat, settling his helmet to the side and waited, eyes studying the
new building with interest.

Jayzine hurried in moments later. "Wingleader," she nodded with a
harried expression. "I'm very sorry I wasn't there to meet you
personally," she said as she approached him.

He rose immediately at her arrival and greeting. "Headwoman Jayzine?"
He offered a hand. "No apology needed, I assure you. I understand how
busy you must be. D'hol of Bronze Yumath."

"Well met," she said taking his hand. "I have quarters lined up for
you on the bluff for the moment. But we have almost finished the first
of the larger weyrs. Would you like a short tour?"

He nodded. "I'd like that yes. I'll take a longer tour and look over
everything with K'ran tomorrow. What are the most pressing needs that
we're looking at right now?"

"We need to get the cleaned sand into the cavern. We do have strong
teams moving it but we could use some dragon power as well." she
nodded. "We could also use some hunting and gathering. The crowds at
mealtimes are expanding and we're going through our current supplies
more quickly than predicted."

Weyrwomen typically worked on supplies, so D'hol had to shift his
thinking for a moment. "If the original residents know where the wild
herds are, riders can do some hunting to replenish stores until we can
get our own herds built up." He glanced towards the massive lake. "And
some fishing too. I'll speak to K'ran and divvy up the coming riders
into groups to haul sand, hunt and fish." Regular pastimes for riders
would have to put aside in favor of meeting the new Weyrhold's needs.
"Can you make me a list of what supplies are needed? We may have to
ask Sunstone to send an early tithe."

"They've been helping out quite a bit "Jayzine nodded. "We're just
progressing very quickly and expecting more wingriders to arrive every
day."

"I can't complain about the progress, but quick progress can be
painful. As soon as I've gotten Yumath unloaded, I can start him in on
assisting with the sand and hunting. He's eager to be active."

"Of course," Jayzine nodded. "Would you like to see your temporary weyr?"

"Yes, please." He offered his arm. "Lead the way, Headwoman. How many
riders can we currently house?"

"Only about fifty at this point, but there is a whole section of the
cliff almost complete and we can move the riders currently on the
bluff into the Weyr proper. We're hoping the queen's weyrs will be
ready to receive them in just over a sevenday. We understood the
first arrivals are scheduled to arrive soon."

"As I understand it, yes. Teseada from Dragonsfall and Kapera from
Dolphins Cove. I believe another is coming as well, but I've not heard
who it is yet or it's yet to be decided. Fifty..." He mused. "We'll
have to have larger herds and one herd only used for reproduction. And
our riders may have to get used to foraging, fishing and hunting in
what little free time they might have. There's going to be some
adjustments for many of them who are used to having idle days between
Fall."

"I was told that Yvonnes of Dreams End intended to send one of hers as
well." she said. She led up him up a path to the top of the bluff
overlooking the cove. To the collection of buildings there. it seemed
there were only a couple of them occupied. "This," she led him to one
of the buildings," would be for you."

"Hopefully a seasoned goldrider and not one that is too young." D'hol
mused. He followed and looked at the building. It wasn't a weyr, but
it had a pleasant looking wallow that Yumath immediately approved of
and he had had to live in similar before. He nodded to Jayzine. "Thank
you, Headwoman. I'll unpack shortly and we'll begin with what's needed
first."

"Thank you sir," she said respectfully. "I've furnished your cot
already," she said. "And your bed has been made up and a small pantry
supplied with fresh fruit. We're serving dinner back in the dining
hall in a couple of hours if you need another hot meal," she nodded.
She realized there had been a dramatic time change for him so he'd
likely want to sleep sooner rather than later. "Since the area is so
large we announce with a bell," she smiled. "Two rings, a pause, and
two more rings, is the indicator for a meal being served. Beyond that
we'll provide the usual items constantly refreshed. Please let me know
if there is anything else I can do for you."

She turned and a smile twitched the corner of her mouth as she saw
Silpen and a couple of others bringing the bronzerider's things from
his dragon. "He's a good lad, like his father," she said softly.

"Thank you, Headwoman." He offered his hand. "I very much look forward
to working with you." D'hol turned at her gaze and his brows twitched
upwards. "Seems so." His approval was clear, and he privately wondered
how old the lad was. Perhaps Impression age? It was something to think
about. "Thank you, Silpen."

Jayzine nodded and took the offered hand. "Thank you sir," she said
and turned to leave.

Silpen grinned. "Where do you want these sir," he said as they came
into the small building.

"Just set them down. I'll take care of the rest. Thank you."
