It was always a joy to come back to the Weyr. After spending a bit of
time with her brother and his gorgeous brown lifemate, Ernola stood at
the edge of the herdbeast paddock next to the lake, feeding Note a few
pieces of the delicate meat as she contemplated her next step. Getting
the break from the Harper Hall was much needed after the task she'd
recently completed.
A tug at her ear combined with the incessant chirrup from the little
green, Ernola realized she'd lost track of time. "Okay, here ...
you're going to make yourself sick, you know. When's the last time
you had such good meat?" she asked as she passed her another piece.
Note ignored her and devoured it as she gazed around with intense
interest.
"Hello Ernola," Cyradis smiled. "How was the Hall?'
Turning to see the Weyrwoman approaching, Ernola smiled back. "Hectic
as always. It's always so refreshing to come back. What brings
you all the way out here? I expected you to in the Hatching Cavern
with Panitath. How many did she lay this time?"
"Thirty-Five," Cyradis smiled. "She's not quite as needy as she's been
in the past. So I can at least take some breaks now and then." Besides
there were all the issues with Yumath's so there had been a great deal
of leniency from her lifemate this go round.
Ernola whistled softly at the amount of eggs that were laid. "That
seems like a lot ... got enough candidates for all of them?" she asked
without thinking, worried that there would be dragonets disappearing
before her eyes. It was an awful thought that had Note chirping in
distress and her hand automatically reached up to sooth the tiny
green. It seemed there were a lot of eggs from all the golds lately
and she pensively wondered why.
"It's a larger clutch than she used to lay but then both she and
Loseth are in their prime so that is when golds lay their biggest
clutches." She smiled. "But of course we can use all the candidates we
can find for them. Have you thought about Standing?"
"I hadn't thought about it since Z'hren was standing since we were
both Searched at the same time. But now that things have settled a bit
and I'm still of age, I'd love to! That is, if that's okay with you
and Panitath," Ernola answered with a bit more enthusiasm than she
intended.
"Well then, I'll put you on the rolls. You should talk with Chaysea
and K'sedel so we know you've had the training you need or at least
get you into the appropriate classes. How does that sound?"
Ernola blinked at the suddenness of Cyradis' response. "Really? It's
that quick?" she asked before the full realization hit. Her face lit
up with a smile and Note launched into the air to sing a happy ditty
with the thought of having a big sister of her own. "That sounds
great, thank you so much. I'll do you proud, I promise."
"Excellent," Cyradis smiled. "I'll expect you to live up to that
promise," she said. "Now you'll need a physical checkup with the
healers and to speak to the Weyrlingmaster K'sedel. Then you should be
all set."
"I'll go set up those meetings now. Thanks again," Ernola said before
walking with a jaunty step as she waved goodbye. "Give my regards to
Panitath!"
