The knock on his door was unexpected, but the person he saw when he
opened it was even more so. "Halendra. I thought you had decided to go
home." D'hol didn't invite the Weyrwoman in, eyes studying her.

"I needed to speak with you. Privately." She brushed past him, looking
around his weyr with interest. "Pleasant, small but pleasant."

D'hol's face revealed nothing as he turned to face the woman. "It's
late. Say what you came to say."

Her lower lip thrust out as she approached him, putting obvious sway
into her hips. Even the clothes she wore were an open invitation to
the male eye, snug and revealing the swells of substantial breasts and
round hips. She reached around him to shut the door, but it didn't
click closed. "D'hol...what you said today hurt my feelings. You know
it's not true."

"About N'lon or about you?"

She laid her hands against his chest, stroking upwards to his
shoulders. "About me. Oh, don't give me that look." She kissed the
center of his chest and was pleased as he lightly laid a hand against
her shoulder, neither pushing her back, but not drawing her closer,
much to her disappointment. "You were right though." She sighed,
lifting her chin and letting her hair fall to her back. "N'lon's not…"
She paused, and her fingers lifted to caress his neck, "substantial."

"If you're looking for a lover, Halendra…I've been there already."

"Hmm…I remember." She slid a hand downwards, caressing below the belt
and was pleased when she heard him grunt in response. "But, I'm not
just looking for that." She smiled up at him. "N'lon's been Weyrleader
for too long, D'hol. He's boring and I'm getting tired of boring." Now
you…" She tugged at the laces of his trousers playfully. "You were
never boring."

"That was a long time ago." D'hol tried to ignore the hand that slid
over him with a knowing caress, but his body responded despite
initial resistance.

"Mmm…There he is." She smiled with satisfaction. "Not boring at all.
Very…fulfilling." Her voice dropped to a purr. "You could be
Weyrleader with me, D'hol. The goldrider does have influence and even
Yedrith is getting bored with Brath. We need a strong Weyrleader and
you could be him. We both know that Cyradis will never choose you, so
let me choose you. I can already tell you're interested" She made to
slip her hand into the loosened trousers and stood on her tiptoe to
run her tongue over his lower lip.

D'hol caught her hand and pulled it away, keeping his
grip punishingly tight on her wrist. "How stupid do you think I am,
Halendra?" His
carefully blank face became mocking. "You forget that you've done this
before and I'm not as stupid as N'lon." He ignored
her gasp of indignation. "If you think I'm going to fall for your
tricks and be shackled to a subpar Weyrwoman who thinks that she can
control me with a flash of breast and a quick rub, you're sadly
mistaken. You're trying to do what you've always done: take something
that belongs to someone else because you're jealous. But you don't
seem to realize something, Halendra. You're inadequate. In _every_
way. I'd rather bed a wher."

She yanked her hand out of his and with fury, slapped D'hol across the
cheek. "You can't talk to me like that! I'm a Weyrwoman! I ride a
senior queen!"

D'hol's response was immediate. His own hand flew, striking her across
the face just enough to sting. She gasped, holding her cheek, but
before she could fling herself at him, he grabbed her jaw and pushed
her back against the wall. His fingers dug into her cheeks. "Never do
that again." His voiced dropped to a deadly whisper. "You may be a
Weyrwoman, but you're not mine. You'll _never_ be mine. Cyradis is ten
times the Weyrwoman you could ever hope to be." She whimpered, her
eyes wide as she stared at him in shock. "You'll leave here, Halendra,
and you'll not return unless you're invited by Cyradis herself. If you
do, Yumath will relay every word you've spoke to your Weyrleader. Do
you understand me?" She nodded against his hand, eyes wide. "Get out
before I throw you out." He released her, then shoved her towards his
door.

Cyradis turned away from the door thankful she'd paused before
announcing herself. She'd intended on thanking him for his defense of
her son. But she didn't feel the need to further humiliate Halendra so
she stepped away and into a side passage darkened at this time of the
night. How frequently had she suffered from the effects of that
younger Weyrwoman? She couldn't even count, but she wasn't one to
inflict pain on others nor embarrassment on D'hol.

Halendra ran out D'hol's weyr, still holding her face in one hand. She
turned to look at the half-open door and fumed, hands clenched into
fists in the darkened hall where it was safer. "You're a fool, D'hol!
You're a pathetic, used up piece of...nothing! You'll never be
anything but an old wher who begs for scraps at the end of a chain!"
She rubbed her cheek with a wince and stomped away, mentally calling
for her Yedrith to leave this horrible Weyr and those who lived in it.

Cyradis turned away with a smile. She decided she should come back tomorrow.
