Reven

Reven

Coran exhaled slowly as he stood outside of his brother's office door. He reached up and touched the folded piece of paper in his breast pocket. The paper had been folded, unfolded, read, reread, and then folded again and shoved back into his pocket more times than he could count.

This was a life altering decision, but Relea had been supportive of his decision. She was always supportive. He didn't think his brother would react the same way.

Steeling himself for whatever reaction he might receive, Coran knocked on the holder's office door and then pushed it open.

"Hey, Reven, you got a minute?"

Reven's head had been bent over a pot of soil, his blue eyes hovering just over the plant as he inspected it. It was easy for Coran to sometimes forget his brother's craft experience in farming.

"Sure," he looked up, smoothing his hair back out of his eyes and rolling his shoulders as he rocked back in his chair, "what's up?"

"You've heard about the tsunami and damage in the River Bluff territory?" Coran got straight to the point as he sat in one of the chairs across from his brother.

A grim expression crossed Reven's face, "Of course, who hasn't? It makes me glad again that we live so far inland."

Coran reached into his pocket and drew out the folded piece of paper, "I've heard from the healer hall. Jade Harbor is requesting additional healers to help with the refugees and injuries from the tsunami."

The expression on Reven's face changed, his eyes narrowing marginally, "They have, huh?"

"Yeah," Coran sighed, meeting his older brother's eyes. "Relea and I have talked and... we're going to go to Jade Harbor. It's a good opportunity for her and I both."

"You are needed here at Green Valley." Reven said, a stubborn edge to his voice.

"Reven, there are other healers here." Coran pointed out.

"True, but none of them are my brother." He rocked forward in his chair, resting his elbows on his desk. "Have you told mom and dad?"

Coran wasn't surprised that Reven was trying to play the parents-card, "Yes, and they're on board. They know how important my craft is to me. If I ever want to move up then I need to be someplace where I can be around other skilled healers. There's a lot that I don't know, and there's a lot I would like to learn."

Reven sighed, a sound Coran recognized as resignation, "Well, it's not like I could keep you here or anything. I don't want you to go though. First Renette leaves and goes back to the Harper Hall, and now you're leaving too?"

"I know, but this is a good opportunity for me, Relea, and Corlea."

"Taking away my niece, Pippa's cousin," Reven shook his head in mock disgust.

Coran laughed and held up his hands, "Just don't sic Arippa on me."

Reven grinned, "I should, but I won't."

"Good, it was hard enough telling mom."

"When do you leave?" Reven said, trying to remain upbeat despite the sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. He hated seeing his family go.

"The end of next sevenday. The Healer Hall is going to send their watch dragon to pick us up." Coran had never ridden on a dragon, it was something he looked forward to almost as much as moving to Jade Harbor.

"So soon, huh?" Reven had been hoping on a little while longer with Coran.

"It's not forever." Coran answered.

"Yeah, tell me that again when the next time we see each other our girls are grown and looking for husbands." The Green Valley holder grumped.

Coran chuckled, "We'll visit before then. Or at least before you get grey haired or go bald."

Reven's eyebrows shot up and he ran his fingers through his long, blonde hair, "Whoa, easy on the hair."

"I'll write, I promise." Coran said, sticking the note from the Healer Hall back into his pocket.

"Deal."
