Description: K'lvin catches up with an old friend, Irrkali.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 2 of Turn 9
K'lvin wasn't sure if he was consciously avoiding Riveenata, or if she
was consciously avoiding him, or if their schedules had just been
completely different, but he hadn't seen hide nor hair of her since
Savith's flight. He wasn't sure how he felt about it. It wasn't as if
they'd ever made plans before but they had seemed to at least one into
one another for a lunch here, or a chat there, as their schedules
intersected.
His eyes flicked upward as a green dragon flew into the Weyrbowl, a
green dragon that he would have recognized anywhere.
**Irrkali is here?** K'lvin leaned forward in the wooden chair he
often sat in out on his ledge.
}:They've been here for a few days now she says.:{ Xmrenth relayed.
Irrkali. She was just what he needed to get his head on straight.
**Tell her I am on my way down.**
Jeath backwinged delicately to land on the floor of the Weyrbowl and
let her rider off. She lifted her head and turned to face Xmrenth, her
eyes whirling. }:Sun with me?:{ she asked first, then passed to her
rider, }:Xmrenth's wishes to speak with you.:{
On the ground, Irrkali paused as she heard the message, then shaded
her eyes with her hands and scanned the ledges. She shifted her course
to go stand in a shady patch by one of the Lower Caverns entrances.
"You could have told me you were here," K'lvin said by way of greeting
as he approached Irrkali and wrapped her in a familiar hug. He'd known
Irrkali for most of his life and they'd shared many things over the
Turns.
The dark-haired greenrider beamed up at him and patted his back.
"K'lvin! But isn't the surprise so much more delightful?"
"You've always liked your surprises," K'lvin grinned.
"It's true, especially when they're good ones, and dropping in on an
old friend certainly counts doesn't it?" she said.
She released him and stepped back slightly, looking him up and down.
"The tropical climate been treating you well?"
"It's been nice," he admitted, "I don't think I could go back to a
colder Weyr now." The overall bronze condition of K'lvin's skin
revealed how much time he spent outdoors.
"Quite a change from Dragonsfall, eh?" she asked rhetorically.
"I'll level with you. I've been put to weyrlingstaff duties for a bit.
Now, I can't stand M'talis, and he's been putting me on the most
ridiculous assignments with the junior weyrlings, like playing night
duty monitor. He won't even let me teach anything, other than,
'explain flights to greenriders'," she vented. "I found out that the
weyrlingstaff here is a little light on adult riders. Thought maybe we
could be a little warmer and I could actually do some educating."
K'lvin frowned a little at the mention of M'talis, "You will be great
at teaching Weyrlings. I assume you left itching powder in M'talis'
bed before you left?"
She had thought that the Rising Moons Weyrlingmaster's Second was a
clutchmate of hers from many Turns ago would have helped her get
reasonable treatment, and instead the brownrider had been nothing but
awful to her. So she grinned as she reported, "Thank you for the
confidence. You know, he was impossible in our clutch, and he
continues to be impossible now. And no, I didn't leave itching powder
in his bed...but I *did* leave dead trundlebugs in his desk and chest
of drawers."
"That'a girl." K'lvin said approvingly. "What are you up to right
now?" He looked between her and Jeath.
"Getting to know my way around the Weyr. I got my paperwork filed and
a weyr assignment four days ago, and I can find the dining cavern and
the weyrling barracks, and that's about it."
"I can show you around if you'd like," he offered. It would be nice to
catch up with Irrkali, and possibly to pick up a bit where they'd left
off, just to see....
She smiles at him, the fine lines around her eyes wrinkling. "You're
too kind to me. I'd appreciate it very much. I could use any gossip on
the individuals here you have as well."
"You know I've never been good at gossip," K'lvin said as he tucked
her hand in the crook of her arm and started walking. "But I do know
some things."
"I'll rely on you to tell me what you can, or to point me at who will
know what's best. know I can't ask you who the prettiest men in the
Weyr are, but perhaps if you can point me at some you know are
single..." She laughed.
"There's no need to look. I'm single," K'lvin grinned.
She had heard about the loss of his weyrmate as part of the River Bluff
disasters, and had dropped by Dolphin Cove a few times, and she thought
that maybe he was all right enough for gentle teasing now.
"A catch like you? No women coming to fawn over the injured bronzerider,
tragically prevented from his duties, hoping to be the one who nurses
him back to a miraculous health and recovery?" Her grin was a little
wicked as she lilted the mock in a perfect sing-song, using Harper
training to advantage.
"Not a single one, except maybe you," he responded in turn, a toothy
grin on his face that was rarely seen nowadays. The mention of being
nursed back to health made him think of Riveenata, since she had been a
healer before Impressing Savith.
"I'm disappointed in the women of this Weyr, then." She shook her head
mock-pityingly.
"Well they all can't have your taste, Irrkali."
"I suppose that's a positive for me, gives me more men to work my way
through."
K'lvin laughed as he draped his arm around her shoulder and led her off
on their tour.
