Description: V'rel has a gift for his two clutchmates
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 20 of Turn 9
It was the end of the day. The classes were over, the dinner and
barracks cleaning was done, and they'd been told to stay by the
barracks and get to know their class. V'rel knew he should be getting
to know lots of people -
thirty-seven was a decent class size, and there were several
hold-searched people he didn't know well.
But right now he wanted to hand something to the friends he did know.
Something he'd been working on before the Hatching, but hadn't
finished before the eggs cracked. The three days since the Hatching
had passed like a whirlwind, with the classes, plus the exercises,
plus feeding Rymeth so many times in the day. But there had been time
when they were supposed to be studying, where he'd been able to take
the parts out of his trunk, and finish up the handicraft he'd been
making.
He cleared his throat and moved over to Dessa. "Can we talk for a
moment?" he asked her. T'lin was close by and V'rel also crooked his
fingers to invite his _friend_ over as well.
Dessa was exhausted, it was mostly mental fatigue. Whole day has been
constant battle of will with Santhiath. Thankfully, she had now fallen
asleep. Dessa had at least learned to cope with the meat cutting
(thinking that the chuck
of meat was already dead and not bleeding helped) and she couldn't remember
much of the classes because she had to make her hatchling to stay in
place when she wanted to wander off to explore. Still, _feeling_
Santhiath inside her was most amazing thing.
"Sure, V'rel," Dessa replied.
"I'm still getting used to it myself. I'd always thought it was going
to be V'tir, honestly." There were some places to sit scattered around
the barracks common areas. V'rel settled on a seat and grinned at her.
T'lin took the seat next to him. "You'll always be Tir to me."
"I'm fine with that," V'rel said. He reached into his pocket and
pulled out a tangled mix of things, then frowned at it - clearly it
wasn't what he expected. "Er, hold on," he said as he began to
untangle them.
Once the task was done, he settled the three items onto a table. Each
one was a woven bracelet of leather and cloth. "I wanted to talk to
you two because I have something for you. I made these and I wanted us
to have them. I made Ty's Turns ago but I re-made it as I got better.
Dessa, I started yours last month. I thought about giving them out
before the hatching but I wanted to save them for if we Impressed..."
his voice trailed off.
"The blue ones are for us and the one with the yellow ribbon woven in
is for you, Dessa," he said.
"Thank you. Aren't these friendship bracelets?" Dess took hers and
inspected it. It was simple thing, a kind of you could wear anyday
without worrying it getting damaged. She liked it and slipped it
around her wrist. "I wish I had something for you, guys," she said.
"Yeah, that's what they are. I thought it was a cute idea..." V'rel
said. He was worried they didn't like them, but then Dessa put it on.
"I'll try to get a good gold-dyed ribbon, not just yellow," he promised.
T'lin took his, holding it as tenderly as if it were fragile. "Oh Tir,
this is wonderful." He blinked back tears.
"Yellow is fine," Dessa replied. She just wanted to hug them both but
didn't dare to. She wasn't sure how strict the weyrling ban was and
didn't want to take any risks.
"I just wanted to do something nice for everyone," he said, pleased by
their happiness at the gift.
T'lin had no reservations about hugging. He wrapped his arms around
V'rel and squeezed him tight. "Thank you so much." Then he turned to
give Dessa a hug too.
Dessa hugged him back. "You two are best friends ever."
T'lin squeezed her tighter. "I couldn't ask for better clutchmates."
When he pulled back he slid on his own bracelet and admired it against
his wrist.
}:I'm glad you're so happy,:{ Rymeth said to his rider with delight.
The blue had very tired and close to sleep but he was so excited by
his rider's excitement that he was popping right back awake.
And since they were using it, V'rel slid his own on, feeling a surge
of joy that lit him up inside. To be here with his friends in the
barracks was such a treat. He knew they were going to have ups and
downs ahead in their training, but at least they were all setting on
this adventure together.
T'lin kissed his palm and blew it at V'rel. "Thanks again." He kissed
his palm a second time and blew it at Dessa. "One for you too."
"Thank you," Dessa replied and just smiled happily.
