He'd not had to bother her for months, so when he knocked on her
office door frame, he wasn't sure of what his reception would be. "You
have a moment?"
She looked up though she knew the voice and knew who stood in her
door. "Of course," she said. "Please," she motioned to the chairs
across from her.
D'hol exhaled through his nose and sat, but remained a bit stiff. His
voice was polite, if a bit stilted. "I have a request to make. When
it's possible, I'll need some repairs done in my weyr. I realize the
craftsmen are working on other projects for you, but the hot water
isn't reaching my bathing chamber. When do you think can any be
spared?"
"We'll get someone over there to take a look tomorrow." She reached
for the hide that was going to Chaysea. "Will that be soon enough?"
He relaxed and nodded, exhaling. "Thank you. I've had a private
bathing chamber for Turns and wasn't looking forward parting with it."
"I don't blame you," she smiled. "Hey, if you need it tonight you can
use mine. The kids are with their foster mother and K'deren and I are
having dinner in his father's weyr. Mine will be empty."
His brows rose for a beat at the offer. His first instinct was to
decline, but he wasn't looking forward to using the public baths. He
studied her face and then nodded. "Thank you. I appreciate the offer."
He'd not been expecting it. "Just let me know when it'll be available
and I'll try to be quick about it."
"I'll have Panitath bespeak Yumath when we leave," she smiled. "You'll
have at least an hour and a half. How long has it been out of order?"
Oh thank Faranth. A candlemark to have a decent soak without the
clamor of Candidates or Weyrstaff. "Two days. I've had to use the
public bathing chambers and the Candidates seem to get younger and
younger every time I go in there. And louder."
She chuckled. "Poor D'hol." She was very aware of his need for privacy
from time to time. "You should have said something the first day."
His lip quivered in response, slowly quirking upwards. "Well, I've
been trying to stay out of your way. It took a weyrbrat canonballing
nearly on my head in the bathing pool to decide that I'd had enough."
This time she laughed and tried to say "I'm sorry." At the same time
she held up her hand she could picture the brat doing exactly as D'hol
had described and just couldn't hold in the laughter.
He crossed his arms over his chest and arched a brow, but there
definite mirth in his eyes. "You're not a bit sorry," he replied,
deciphering her words through her laughter. He drummed his fingers on
his biceps, then began chuckling along with her. "Go ahead, mock my
misfortune, why don't you?"
When she caught her breath she sputtered a little... "I'll bet you
gave them your scary Wingleader look and drove them out of the pool."
His lips twisted and his fingers drummed against his biceps a bit
quicker. He didn't answer right away, then cleared his throat. "I
might have made a few expressions and comments....and threats."
"Are you sure you wouldn't have that pool all to yourself tonight?"
She held up a hand. "No, nevermind. Just remember I made the offer
before you told me about your... your.. misfortune."
He muttered something about relieving himself in her bathing chamber
before he nodded. "Aye, I'll remember." Laughter still quivering
around his mouth, he finally gave in to a deeper chuckle. It had been
a while since he'd really laughed and it felt just as pleasant as he
remembered.
