Riveth had already taken off to lay on Kenirath's ledge, while Talwynn was
packing up her full set of flight gear and fall straps to take over to
D'kere's weyr. Threadfall was tomorrow and she would be delivering
firestone to the wings again.

She remembered when she'd first returned to delivering stone...

flashback:

Threadfall began at the start of the afternoon. Talwynn made sure
everything was perfect as she was getting ready. The
carefully-prepared new set of fighting straps went onto Riveth. She
tugged on them and made sure they were secure. Then she pulled on her
fighting jacket and closed it up around her. The helmet went on her
head and the goggles hung around her neck.

She took a deep breath and walked down to the part of the Weyrbowl
where the Weyrlingmaster and his staff stood, along with the
weyrlings. The younger ones who were too young to deliver it were busy
packing firestone into bags. The ones old enough to deliver were
reporting to the Weyrlingmasters and arraying themselves in formation.

The greenrider headed to G'nir and saluted him. "Ready for flight, sir."

D'kere glanced sideways at Talwynn. He knew how important today was
for her and he couldn't help but feel a little nervous on her behalf.
He hoped that it went well, he couldn't imagine what could of
emotional fallout there would be for the greenrider if it didn't.

"Good luck, Talwynn," G'nir replied to her greeting. He had been
observing her while she trained with the weyrlings and what he had
seen had impressed him, so he had no reservations to let her try.
After all, she had healer's permission. "Don't hesitate to call this
off if it turns out to be too much a strain for you," he reminded, He
preferred caution and prudence.

Meanwhile, E'naer was giving Riveth the same inspection he gave to all
weyrling dragons before they were allowed up to the air. He tried to
remember how badly the green had been injured. His sympathy was on
Talwynn's side, he knew how it felt to overcome an injury. It was
partly of his own injury why he know worked with the Weyrlings.

One of the young Weyrlings began building a pyramid of firestone sacks
in front of the group's formation, envious of his older clutchmates
who would get to see Thread up close and experience what it was like
to _truly_ be a dragonrider. He knew his turn would come, and when it
did, he and his brown would be ready!

Talwynn nodded to G'nir. "We'll let you know if we reach the strain
point," she said.

Personally, she didn't think she'd get that far. With so many
weyrlings, how many sacks would she personally get to deliver?

Riveth lowered her head and spread her wings as E'naer looked at her.
She'd had injuries to the left wing that had affected her flying for
the first Turn as wing tissue grew back. But while she'd regained her
agility to fly, it had been her riders' trouble that had grounded
them long-term.

"Riveth looks good and ready," was E'naer's professional judgement.

If the staff thought she and Riveth were ready, then they were. She
walked over to pick up some sacks to tie to Riveth's side, smiling at
the younger weyrlings who weren't going to be delivering yet. "How's
it going?" she asked.

"Good," said R'dikan, a bluerider who was only 14 Turns old. His blue
had been flying next to Talwynn in some of the practice formations and
he thought it was awesome that she was going to be going back to
flight.

"You and Riveth are gonna do great up there! Right?" he said, elbowing
the brown weyrling next to him.

D'kere mounted to Kenirath's neckridge, leather harness creaking as he
hooked himself into place and then lowered his goggles over his eyes.
Kenirath was ready to get into the air, and he leapt up with gusto
when the order finally came for the Weyrlings to rise. It was a little
different, being a part of the Weyrling staff and not actually
fighting Thread, but D'kere also enjoyed being there as a safety net
for their young dragonriders.

In the middle wing of 'fall they'd faced some gusts and D'ale was
running low on 'stone. "Stone to me," he called for resupply.

The young weyrling grabbed a couple sacks of firestone and ran as fast
as his legs would carry him under the extra weight to the waiting
greenrider. "Good luck, Talwynn! You're going to do great!"

"Riveth and Talwynn, you're next, Juth from Cyan is also asking for
refill. Reamma, you too! Two Cyan blues needs sacks!" G'nir called out
names and instructions, his eyes slightly glazed because he was in
constant communion with Nirreth.

**Juth and Torerath from Cyan,** Talwynn repeated to herself and to
Riveth. She picked up the sacks from the younger brownrider and
strapped them to Riveth. "Here we go," she said.

Once the boy was clear, the green gathered her legs and sprung into
the air. She reached out to the other dragons and had the visual of
where Cyan was flying. They /betweened/ - one, two, three breaths of
time, though she was holding her breath - and came out into Threadfall
for the first time in three Turns.

Cyan wing was mid-level, so they had more Thread than the Queen's wing
but less than the high levels. The pair appeared into a clear spot
slightly above her targets. D'ale and Torerath were closer, so she had
Riveth move closer so she was sure she could make the throw.

Riveth's eyes were whirling red as she sensed the Thread. She was up
here facing it, not on the ground. She should flame it! She had no
flame!

Talwynn kept a grip on the green's desire to fight. **We have to
deliver stone, that's why we're here,** she reminded until the green
gave in.

}:Torerath, mine has your stone,:{ Riveth relayed to the brown.

D'ale nodded and lifted an arm signalling his readiness for the toss.

}:Ready,:{ the big brown tilted slightly in the air and fell into a
glide so his wings wouldn't interfere.

Riveth held as still as she could and kept an eye out in case any
Thread endangered them, while Talwynn picked up the sack and tossed it
to the Wingsecond. It flew in a solid arc towards D'ale.

He caught it easily and gave her a quick nod of thanks and a big
smile. He knew exactly who this was and what she'd accomplished.
Moments later he was tossing stone into Torerath's maw and they began
fighting once again.

The sack was a good throw and made it. Talwynn sighed with relief.
She'd done it! She was proud of herself. D'kere would be proud.

}:Kenirath, we did it!:{ Riveth relayed to the bronze, inspired by her
enthusiasm.

**Juth next,** Talwynn thought. Riveth dodged over towards the blue
and signaled his rider that stone was incoming.

Kenirath relayed the message to D'kere, sending a trickle of relief
down his spine. **Thank Faranth.**

** How much flame you still got left on you? ** M'shan asked, his hand
feeling the empty bottom of the firestone sack.

}: Two short bursts or one long flame, { Juth replied. }: I need that
refil! :{ He called out.

}:Incoming,:{ Riveth called to Juth.

Talwynn waved to catch M'shan's attention, then sent the sack of
firestone flying towards him.

M'shan caught the sack and waived his thank you, when Juth suddenly
twisted and surged ahead.

}: Riveth, on your left! ;{ He warned and used last of his flame to
burn the Thread clump.

She and Talwynn both turned their head to see the huge clump coming at
their left side - their already damaged left side. Juth's flame seared
the Thread tangle, but some still remained, fluttering forward and
unfurling towards them.

Dragons had one response when faced with Thread. Riveth instinctually
opened her mouth to flame it, snarling, }:I have it!:{

**No!** Talwynn shouted mentally, knowing this was going to lead to
disaster. They was just delivering firestone, and Riveth hadn't been
fed any herself, since it was not her job to be flaming. But draconic
instinct was pushing her to fight it anyway...

She pictured Dragonsfall's weyrbowl and frantically pushed their need
to go /between/ now at her lifemate's mind. An agonizing moment hung
before Riveth responded to her desperation and panic and took the
visual, blinking /between/ just as the tangle was upon them.

The three heartbeats of cold /between/ had never felt so welcoming before.

They reappeared high above Dragonsfall. Immediately Talwynn started
patting herself down and turning her head to look at Riveth on the
side where the Thread had been. **Are you hurt? Did it get you?**

The green flapped her wings to stay in air. }:There is nothing.:{

**Good. Tell Juth we're safe, and let's land.** she ordered.

}:Juth, thank you for warning us, we are fine,:{ the green said to the
blue. }:Nirreth, we land for more stone and orders,:{ she added.

They needed to restock before they went out there again. And maybe
there would be comments on her performance. But they had gone out, and
dodged Thread, and been safe.

Hopefully all other weyrlings would be, too.

}: You're welcome, :{, Juth replied to her He turned his head to
receive more firestone from his rider and promptly forgot whole
incident.

It was a good day for the Weyrlings in the air, the worst of injuries
being some ashburn, and frazzled nerves. D'kere felt that sense of
relief that always came with a Threadfall complete. The Weyrlings
would celebrate tonight for a job well done.

- - - - -

It had in fact gone very well that first time. She'd been added to the
firestone duty roster as a regular member now. And soon, she thought, she
might have enough proof under her belt to reach out to a wingleader...
