Cyradis

L'pin had come back from Far Island with a number of surprising
revelations. He didn't want to bring them to J'ackt just yet, or have
his found aunt drop on him with no warning. Instead, he had Chaneth
reach out to Panitath and Loseth so he could bring the info to the
Weyrleaders first and have them looped in.

"Hey, L'pin. What's going on?" N'vanik asked. He worried something
might be wrong with the Weyrlings.

Cyradis followed shortly with a puzzled expression. "L'pin?"

"Weyrleader, Weyrwoman, I hope your dragons are well," the
Weyrlingmaster's Third greeted them both. Once everyone was seated, he
launched into his explanation.

"I wanted to let you know about some interesting information about
J'ackt I've found out. You see, after talking to him, I thought I'd
look into his background. A personal favor to him. Originally I was
just looking for answers to a legal question about his father.
However, I wound up finding some more information then that, and I
wanted to bring it to you two before talking to him, given his
temper."

Cyradis snorted softly. "Good idea," she smiled. "What did you find out?"

"His mother Ocktima was actually a dragonless woman from Far Island
Weyr," L'pin said. He took a moment to let them absorb it - every
rider had a horror at the thought and N'vanik would know more than
many.

"After her accident, she went as far away as she could. Emerald Falls
Hold. That's where she married Jenasom. I found her name and origin on
the certificate the Archives had," the bluerider continued. "When I
visited Far Island, I found that she has a living sister, who wants to
know about her nephew. Oh, and the man he thought was his father?
Might not have been."

"Dragonless," Cyradis shuddered. She could only imagine the kind of
loss that would drive the woman away from the Weyr and other complete
pairs. But she refocused on the news. "A sister? Did she have any idea
who might be the father if he wasn't the man he knew?"

After the initial surprise at learning J'ackt's mother had been
dragonless, N'vanik's thoughts turned to what the poor woman had
suffered even after the loss of her dragon. He wanted to dig up
Jenasom's bones just so he could piss on them. "That pile of wherry
shite might not be his da?"

"The mother's sister said she thought Ocktima had someone else on the
side. A dragonrider," L'pin said. "The trial records of his father say
that he beat a guard to death after accusations on his
personality...on his wife's history...and on J'ackt's parentage."

"That man was just an all around ray of sunshine wasn't he?" N'vanik
let out a snort of disgust. "So J'ackt might be the son of this
dragonrider instead?"

"It's a possibility. The sister really wanted to meet him, but I told
her that J'ackt would need some time first. I want to tell him what
we've discovered, but I wanted to bring it to you two, first."

"Thank you," she said. "But I think we need to know whether this rider
knew about J'ackt. Did this aunt know who it was?"

"A brownrider named K'yne. She said that he knew Saibra well, and
she's at Dragonsfall. either he's there, or she knows where he is?"

"Well let's send a message to Saibra and ask about this K'yne."
N'vanik said. If the brownrider was J'ackt's father and had knowingly
left him with Jenasom...

The name rang a dim bell in Cyradis mind like she was missing
something but she just couldn't put her finger on it. After another
moment she just nodded. "Do you want any company when you go talk to
her?"

"I wouldn't mind your company at all, Weyrwoman," L'pin said. "This
whole situation is more delicate than I initially assumed and a
ranker's touch might be a good thing."

She smiled and nodded. She had her own reasons for wanting to see her
friend that went beyond this discussion. "You should probably get some
rest," she said. "We can go in the morning."

"Thanks for bringing this to us," N'vanik said. The implications could
be _huge_ for J'ackt.

L'pin nodded in acknowledgement of their words. "I appreciate the two
of you letting me continue to pursue this. I know it's outside of my
usual duties, but I feel like J'ackt deserves to know the truth about
his life, whatever it turns out to be."

"I hope whatever you find is good news for him, but yeah. He'll
appreciate the truth, whatever it is." At the very least, J'ackt had
an aunt that wanted to meet him and N'vanik hoped the boy would see
that as positive.
