N'vanik

N'vanik

N'vanik had been to River Bluff after the collapse to help out, but
seeing the state of the Weyr was a shock, especially know that he knew
it was effectively uninhabitable. A handful of people might stay to
rebuild, but the rest of the population would have to move, scattered
all over the South.

Loseth rumbled a greeting to several dragons as he landed and his
rider slid off to find K'ran's tent.

A weyrbrat spotted the foreign rider and ran up to him. Jadirel's eyes
flicked to the knots and he saluted. "Weyrleader sir, if you're
looking for ours he's this way in the crafts buildings," he said,
leading N'vanik there and dropping him off.

After leaving the Conclave, K'ran had retreated back to the large room
that had served as office, conference chamber, and temporary quarters.
The knock on the door surprised him, but when he saw who the weyrbrat
had brought, he smiled. "Weyrleader N'vanik, come on in," he said,
gesturing with his good arm at the assortment of odd chairs around the
table and room.

"K'ran, good to see you." N'vanik took a seat. "I know we just saw
each other at the conclave, but I wanted to look in on you more as a
friend."

"I appreciate you stopping by," K'ran said. "That meeting was
surprisingly hard to get through. And H'lib was a bit of a jerk
afterwards - I think he meant me to overhear a few nasty comments."

N'vanik rolled his eyes. "Do you think I could get away with punching
him again, now that I'm a Weyrleader?"

"On the one hand, he couldn't directly punish you. On the other hand,
that might cause bad feelings between your Weyrs and you share
territory," K'ran said with a laugh.

"It would be completely worth it."

"I've only ever interacted with him at Conclaves and didn't know a man
could be that rude." K'ran thought of the insinuation that it had been
his fault that many had died, that he'd failed at reacting, and the
slow burn of anger was still there.

"Speaking of territory, or at least of conclave matters. I'm glad
you're taking Rapids. They're a good Wing and I trust you with them."

"Thanks." N'vanik couldn't help thinking how different K'ran was from
H'lib. "Are you coming with your Wing?"

K'ran furrowed his brow. He'd been thinking as it as he'd made
recommendations. "I was at Dragonsfall before River Bluff, so I think
some people expect me to go there. On the other hand, I don't know
what K'reyel thinks about it and I hate the thought of leaving
Rapids." He'd led them just as long as Cyan, now, and more recently.
So they felt more 'his'.

"You're welcome to come. We'd be happy to have you." The poor man had
been through enough, he should at least go somewhere he was wanted.

"I appreciate it and I think I will take you up on that. It will be
good to fly with you and Cyradis again." Though he'd only been at
Dolphin Cove for a short time while she was there - he'd been more
familiar with her 2 predecessors.

"And it'll be good to have another bronzerider around that I trust in
case something happens to me." N'vanik wasn't a pessimist but it was
the reality of a Pass that he could have a serious accident or die at
any time. Or he could lose Panitath's next Flight. If he had a choice
R'enh would take over, but of course it was the dragons who would
decide. Having a former Weyrleader around would increase the odds that
the Weyr would be left in good hands.

K'ran nodded. He saw the value in that decision. When he'd come to
River Bluff, he hadn't yet known who to hope would replace him if
something serious came up. It would be good for N'vanik to have
another person he trusted.

"I'm afraid you'll have to find me boring things around the Weyr to do
for a bit, though," he said.

"You can help get the other River Bluff people settled in. Might be
good to have a familiar face checking in on them."

"That part will be easy. And maybe we could do watches when Rogueth's
able to at least fly."

N'vanik nodded. "I'm sure the other riders will be happy to add
another pair to the watch rotation. How is he healing, by the way?"

"The cuts and scrapes are healing well, so the dragonhealers tell me.
They do think the hindlimb's broken," K'ran said with a grimace. "He
still can't maneuver it well or get himself into the air."

"That's a shame," N'vanik said with a sympathetic grimace. "So that
means you're stuck here for a while?"

"I was afraid I'd be stuck here after the wings leave." Which would
have been incredibly boring and very sad. "But I was told he's clear
to move /between/. If two other dragons can get him in the air, he can
/between/ himself and land. It wasn't worth the trauma to go to the
Conclave, but once for resettling shouldn't be a problem."

"Ah, that's good. I wouldn't want you to be left behind."

"It would certainly be boring," K'ran said. No point in mentioning on
how it would be depressing - they both knew that. "I suppose I'll have
to get used to the ground floor life for a bit."

"We'll make sure you don't waste away." And N'vanik would make some
gentle suggestions to see a mindhealer, but that could wait. "While
I'm here, is there anything I can help with?"

K'ran thought about it for a moment. "I think right now everyone is
just packing up their stuff to leave, so how do you feel about
physical labor? Although...you could take the records of Rapids we've
got and of the transfers who are coming to you back to where you'd
like them files."

"I don't mind helping people pack. I can do that for a bit and then
take the records back to Dolphin Cove." N'vanik didn't have a lot of
time to spare, but he did want to do something.

"I appreciate it," K'ran said.
