Description: The Dolphin Cove Weyrleaders react to the River Bluff disaster.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 20 of Turn 8
Cyradis ran from her weyr into the council chamber. "N'vanik!" she
called. Both Lanniya and Panitath had confirmed the worst of the
disaster happening at River Bluff. Dragon voices were rising in their
pain and grief over the loss.
"It's Villarth," she sobbed. "She's... she's gone."
Riyanth lifted her head into the air and started keening. She had only
met the other golds a few times but and it was a terrible blow to lose
any other queen dragon.
Early afternoon at River Bluff was well into the evening hours at
Dolphin Cove. Kapera had been eating a late meal in the Dining
Caverns, so it took her longer to report back to the meeting chambers.
But she knew that with the magnitude of disaster unfolding, the Weyr
would need to respond and the leadership would need to meet.
**I thought they just had a tsunami, it didn't sound that bad,** she
thought as she ran.
"Vilarth is gone? And some others as well?" she asked when she bolted
into the chambers.
What N'vanik heard from Loseth he could hardly believe. }:The Weyr
fell. She would not leave her eggs.:{ Loseth went to River Bluff often
enough to have friends there and he was getting information from them.
"He's saying the Weyr fell. The ground shaking. I think the Weyr
collapsed." He was so sharding glad he'd gotten Nisha and her family
out before then. It was almost unbelievable, but it had happened
before. Dolphin Cove existed because Thayan Peak had been destroyed.
If Kapera hadn't been horrified before, she was now. She could easily
picture how Vilarth would have kept Lenala there. Riyanth was so
protective of her eggs, she rarely let Kapera leave the Hatching
Grounds... If it had been Kapera there, would she have tried to run
from the tide and the rocks? To do so would have been to leave her
gold behind! Or would Riyanth have followed her rider, if she'd run -
compelled to protect her? She could easily picture a future where she
was either dead or dragonless and not sure which was worse...
She sank into the closest chair with her hand over her mouth. "No,"
she whispered, shuddering at the horror.
Cyradis covered her face and tried to slow down her breathing. This
had happened before to her own family. She knew how awful it could
be.
"Lanniya heard it and had to go. I sent R'enh and a few others with
her," she told N'vanik. "They'll send someone back with more details
and any requests for aid."
Kapera was at first surprised that Lanniya had gone before they'd
gotten more details. Then she realized it made sense - Lanniya must
have heard the response to the earthquake and gone to respond.
"Is Lanniya going to be okay facing that? With her past history around
storm and water damage?" Kapera asked.
"It's her home," N'vanik said. "Her friends are there. She's gonna
want to help them, even if it's hard." He hoped her friends were safe.
Lenala and her gold weren't the only casualties claimed by the tsunami
and earthquake. If things had been different, it could have been
Rhosyn crushed beneath the Weyr. Although their relationship had
ended, he was glad the former Weyrwoman was alive and safe somewhere
else.
"Lanniya is doing her job and that is a very important step. She's
acting like a Goldrider and taking responsibility for those in her
care. R'enh can keep her from doing anything stupid I think." Cyradis
nodded.
There wasn't a ton they could do before Lanniya reported in with exact
specifics on what River Bluff needed, but Kapera had a few toughts on
the kind of help they might need. Supplies and possibly Healers, sure.
But would they need to move some of their people?
"We have those spaces where the Harpers used to be, the ones where the
Technicians are. But there are fewer Technicians then there used to be
hallfolk. Could we have the lower caverns staff clean out some of
those and offer them as shelter space?"
Cyradis nodded. "We have room enough here for an entire wing of riders
and their support staff. This Weyr has never been full."
"They'll need help with their next Fall, too. We could lend a few
riders," N'vanik said. Not many, especially with the time difference.
"And healers. Their own are probably busy so they'll need more to deal
with 'Scorings."
"Supplies I'm sure," Cyradis agreed. "Who knows how much they got out
of those caverns before..."
"I can go talk to Chaysea about how much of what we can spare, so that
as soon as Lanniya tells us what they need, we can send it over,"
Kapera offered.
"And I'll make sure we have enough dragonpairs to bring over the
supplies." N'vanik was grateful Dolphin Cove was in a position to
help, even if he'd rather not have a situation like this come up.
"Thank you Kapera," Cyradis said with genuine feeling. "I'm sure we'll
hear soon."
