Cyradis sighed as she leaned against Panitath watching the sun on the
waters of the sea in the distance. So much change in so little time
and yet... It seemed she felt more at home here now than ever before.
~~Flashback~~
"So, Meledei is gone." Cyradis said as she stepped into N'vanik's
office. "I hope she does well," she smiled.
"Yeah. Me too." N'vanik let out a breath. Of course with dragons no
one was ever really far away, but he was still going to miss her.
"She has a good head on her shoulders," Cyradis said. "Some more
experience and polish is all she needs. It's just a matter of time."
She was hopeful the younger gold rider would get the support she
needed up north and return to them in the future.
"Yeah. I'm proud of her, getting out of her comfort zone and all."
"Yes," she smiled. Meledei was unique in her views and she could only
wish her well. She had a good heart and that was more than she could
say for many people around.
"Maybe you can have Loseth reach out to them to tell them they'll
always be welcome back here? I had Panitath relay the message but I
know she has a special place in her heart for you," she winked.
"I already told her she can come back any time." Though he'd been
careful not to make her think he was asking her to stay. Meledei had a
made a surprising but important choice and he didn't want to hold her
back from that experience.
"I'm glad," she said softly. "She's special, that one." She took a
deep breath and sat in the chair across from him. N'vanik was
certainly a good Weyrleader, he was organized, centered, and he cared
about their riders. Okay, he could be a pain in the arse when he was
in a snit but then perhaps that was part of his charm.
"What do you think about Lanniya," she leaned back with half a smile.
"I like her. She's a sweet girl." The young goldrider seemed a bit
uncertain, but she'd been sent to a new weyr with a pregnant dragon
and all that after being reprimanded for pulling that timing stunt. He
also got the distinct feeling she and Rhosyn hadn't gotten along.
"I think so too," she nodded. "Kapera likes working with her, and the
clutch is good and solid. Do you think we could poach the sire's
dragonhealer rider? Have you spoken to him. He seems quite solid."
"Shards I'd love to. Experienced dragonhealer like that? And yeah I've
talked to him. Y'gel is Nisha's foster father." Generally the man was
busy when N'vanik visited but they'd chatted a few times.
"If only," she smiled. "I'd imagine K'ran might have something to say
about that as we won't be keeping Lanniya much past her clutch's
hatching." She tilted her head again. "Would you like having Nisha
here?"
"I'd _love_ it." She was getting to the age where she'd start to
remember things and he wished he could spend more time with her.
"I know you would," she reached out a hand to his forearm. "It was
very difficult when my boys decided to stay with their father." But
she smiled and added, "at least R'nar is here now."
"And a bronzerider at that." N'vanik smiled. "Is it strange for him,
being here with yours and K'deren's blended family?"
"No more so than it was for him with his father." She shrugged. "He's
weyrborn. Family just means 'this group of people who love me.'
Right?"
"Yeah," he agreed. "Still, you've been living apart for a while. Just
wondering if it might be an adjustment." Although weyrlinghood
undoubtedly took most of R'nar's attention.
She looked thoughtful at that. "Do you think?" She tried hard to
remember what they'd talked about but didn't remember any feelings of
stress.
N'vanik shrugged. "I think it's possible. Maybe he's fine, too. Maybe
he's so wrapped up with his new lifemate it doesn't matter."
She snorted a puff of air. "Probably," she smiled. She reached out to
touch his arm in friendly thanks. "I appreciate your thoughts and
advice." She thought a moment before bringing up the next subject.
"Have you talked to R'enh recently about his plans with Saibra?"
"Not in the last sevenday or so."
"Ah," she said neutrally. "Well, from what I've heard they're
exclusive at different Weyrs." She shook her head. "I just don't see
how that's going to work out for them."
They'd been growing closer and were trying for a baby so it wasn't a
complete surprise. Selfishly, N'vanik worried he might lose R'ehn to
Dragonsfall. To cover the unease he felt at the prospect, N'vanik
snorted. "A lot of us can't even be exclusive at the _same_ Weyr."
She laughed and tapped his hand. "And here I didn't think that was
something in your vocabulary. I'd always assumed you liked being free
of binding ties."
"I know the word "exclusive" so I can run away when people mention
it." He smiled.
She chuckled.
~~End Flashback~~
And she chuckled again now just remembering the conversation. How had
they come this far from where they'd started? She was comfortable with
N'vanik as her Weyrleader. She was beginning to feel the precursors
to Panitath's next flight and could only hope she's pick Loseth once
again.
}:I will choose who is best,:{ the gold practically sniffed.
**Of course you will,** Cyradis agreed and patted the gold hide.
