Briata

There was no doubt in his mind that Briata would fail to recognize the
smug satisfaction emanating from Aughashyth and realize that he'd won
the gold flight. So after he'd come back to himself and assured, for
his own peace of mind, that Lanniya was alright and comfortable, his
first order of business was to find his Weyrmate.

"Briata," he called as he came through the door.

Briata was not a dragonrider and had no intention of ever becoming
one. However, unlike others who had grown up in Holds, she had an
idea of what it was like for the dragonriders when flights occurred
thanks to her ability. It had made things extremely difficult for her
in the beginning, and had even resulted in her falling into temptation
twice - the second time with Y'gel, and that hadn't even been a
dragonflight, simply a flight with her gold. Since then, she'd
managed to gain a lot more control, though the flights still affected
her more than most. Gold flights were particularly difficult. After
flights, Briata generally gained the aid of another foster mother to
take the children and waited for him to indulge both Y'gel and herself
in the desire that was spurred by such events.

Except that time, he didn't return.

In time, the desire faded and Briata realized Aug had actually won a
gold flight. Aug was a capable bronze, but because of his past
injury, he hadn't generally pulled forward when chasing golds.
Evidently, that time was different. The children were still with
Amiya when Y'gel arrived and she greeted her weyrmate with a smile.
"Congratulations."

"We were lucky," he smiled back. "Though I'm sure Aug will tell it
differently." He felt a sleepy affirmative at the back of his mind
from where the big bronze lay entwined with his gold prize. "How are
you doing," he added with genuine concern.

"I'm all right. Had to take a bath to calm down." Briata managed a
lopsided smile. "Aug is quite happy though, I know flights have
sometimes been a struggle." Well, gold flights anyway.

"Yes he is," Y'gel chuckled and stepped closer to his weyrmate.
Truthfully she was only a few turns older than the young goldrider but
her experience and maturity were leagues beyond the teenager. "I never
thought he'd win," he mused. "I think it was his knowledge of her
recent injuries that got him closest when she finally faltered."

"He had inside information." Briata laughed a little. Perhaps it was
that, or perhaps it was because they had something in common. While
it seemed dragonflights were sometimes at random, sometimes there was
also a sense that the golds chose. Not always, she was certain there
were some bronzes who were just wiley enough to catch them by
surprise, but perhaps the golds would sometimes sway the results.
"This clutch will be particularly exciting."

"Yes it will," he smiled with sincere appreciation for the lovely
woman next to him. There was enough residual flight left in his system
and he would dearly love to share it with her. He leaned down and
brushed her cheek with his lips. "Are you all cooled down or would
you..." he left the question hanging in the air.

Briata tilted her head to the side, a sly smile spreading over her
lips. "I'm cooled down, but that doesn't mean the fire can't be
stoked."

"Oh good," he smiled back. "I could really use your tender mercies
right now," his voice grew a little husky as the banked desire flushed
back through his system.

"That's why I was waiting for you." Although Briata would have
preferred that he hadn't won, she was more than happy to wipe the
memory of the flight from her Weyrmate's mind. She turned to head
toward the bedroom, pausing in the threshold long enough to cast an
expectant expression toward him before disappearing inside.

The look she gave him was more than enough to hurry his steps after
her into their sleeping chamber. "I love you," he breathed as he
followed her.
