The feast was over and now K'ran knew his job was to spend the time
before the dancing began talking with dignitaries. He'd seen this
performed before, but it had never been his job, and so he felt
nervous the whole time. At least the atmosphere was pleasant, with the
festivities held outside on the temporary stage, and the lanterns
strung up provided cheery light as it grew darker.
He had a brief exchange of pleasantries with the Lord Holder from
Turquoise Bay, who seemed dismissive. He spotted someone he recognized
across the way and realized that it was a good chance to end the talk.
"Excuse me, I've got to speak to the Dolphin Cove Weyrleader," he
said, nodding once before walking over.
"N'vanik!" he called when he was close by. "How are you and Loseth?"
"We're good." He smiled. "Congratulations on the Hatching."
"I can't believe those dragonets are Rogueth's," K'ran said. "It still
feels like a dream."
"Yeah I remember that feeling. Still amazes me every time." Loseth
kept catching even though they'd been through three Senior Queens.
}:I'm good at catching golds,:{ Loseth said smugly.
"I hope this isn't the only time he has some, but if it is at least
they were big and healthy." That was something to be happy about. "I
kind of wish the old Istan Weyrleader could see this."
"Rub it in his face?" N'vanik chuckled.
"It's a shallow impulse, but yet. The desire to prove I'm better than
the wherrydung he said. It's a bronzerider thing," K'ran said,
laughing at himself.
"Yeah, I've been there. My list is kinda long." N'vanik had a lot of
doubters before he'd proven himself as Weyrleader.
"Was it satisfying?"
N'vanik's mischievous smile made him look younger. "Oh yeah."
"Good. I hope if I ever see the man, it'll be equally enjoyable." He'd
lost his position last Turn, so K'ran had heard. So it would feel a
little more sweet.
"What do you think of the arrangements here? I was a bit skeptical
about holding it outside, but it seems like it turned out wonderfully
and I should never have doubted."
"I like it. I wonder if Cyradis might want to try this at Dolphin
Cove." Being outside made it feel like a Gather.
"There's enough beach for it and the bowl shape would lend itself
well," he agreed.
N'vanik nodded. "And I'm sure our Headwoman could pull it off." Most
of the planning would fall to her.
"I look forward to seeing what you do next time, and to dropping in
for a visit if that's all right." He had really liked serving at
Dolphin Cove.
"Absolutely. I'd like that." K'ran was easy to talk to and N'vanik
enjoyed his company.
"It's a pity we don't get more chances to see a number of people
outside of Gathers. I miss when we had time to organize Weyr Games,
and the like."
"Thread had to come along and put a damper on things." Fighting Thread
gave N'vanik a purpose but he'd give that up in a heartbeat to have
back the riders and dragons they'd lost.
"Indeed it did. Imagine the world we'd have without it." A very
different one, K'ran thought. "But that's not the one these weyrlings
will wind up with."
"No, and it's up to us to make sure they get through to the end of the
Pass." As many as they could, at least. Thread would always claim
lives.
"I guess that's the role of bronzeriders, whether we're leading a Wing
or teaching them like the Weyrlingmasters do, just keep them safe and
trained." Important duty, but a bit sobering.
"Speaking of riders, how are your wing numbers looking?" It wasn't
intended to be a rude question, but curiosity - after all, he had gone
to Dolphin Cove when they'd needed numbers.
"We're doing good," N'vanik said with a flare of pride. It wasn't all
due to him, but under his leadership Dolphin Cove had regained the
numbers they'd lost in a horrific Threadfall disaster. One of the
previous Weyrleaders had made a mistake, sending his Wing into the
main path of Thread and causing dozens of riders to be killed and
severely injured. N'vanik had taken over more than a turn later and
the Weyr had still been struggling.
"That's excellent to hear. I know for awhile you'd needed some
leadership potential," K'ran said with a genuine smile. "If there's
any types you do need, I'd be happy to discuss a swap. I think I have
a few individuals who are solid riders but would be interested in
opportunity elsewhere."
"We could use experienced bronze and brownriders, but I hear that's
the case for every Weyr. We're short of 'Thirds, too."
"There might be a few candidates for that I can give a nudge," K'ran offered.
"Thanks." While K'sedel had been pleasant enough, N'vanik liked K'ran
better. The man was just easier to talk to, a little less formal.
N'vanik hoped he stuck around for a while.
K'ran spotted a hand waving and recognized the Lord Warder of one of
the Holds. "I should probably get back to greeting the dignitaries.
But it was good to run into you today."
"You, too."
