Moving Up

Writers: Avery, Heather
Date Posted: 5th August 2016

Characters: R'nar, A'vel, L'pin, Chaysea
Description: The junior weyrlings get their weyrs.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 3 of Turn 8

/Between/ was approaching soon enough, and that meant it was time for
the weyrlings to start moving to their own weyrs. L'pin had given
Chaysea a heads-up that a pile of weyrlings would be seeking their own
weyrs in the next sevenday, since he suspected there would need to be
the inevitable preparatory work to be finalized before they could move
in. After all, not all of the open weyrs would be in areas considered
appropriate for the weyrlings, and perhaps some ones that had been
unused for awhile needed furniture restoration or cleaning. He didn't
know, so he made sure to give her plenty of time.

Now that the day had arrived, there was a palpable excitement from the
weyrlings shuffling into the classroom, just like on other days with
interesting assignments. L'pin watched in amusement as some sat in the
back and tried to act like they didn't care, and others started
hovering around the front, hoping they'd get first pick.

A'vel looked behind him as he came into the classroom and saw the
Headwoman carrying an armful, so he stopped and held the door open for
her.

"Thank you, A'vel," she smiled as she passed by him, jostling into the
room with the multiple maps that she had of the different, available
weyrs.

Behind Chaysea, R'nar came in, "Look at you, earning brownie points
holding the door for the Headwoman." He teased A'vel.

A'vel blushed, but kept holding the door. "It'll help me get the best
weyr," he said back.

L'pin waved the crowd of weyrlings back and gestured to Chaysea and
then to the table. "Everyone move so she has room, or you're not going
to be able to get a weyr," he chided.

"Or I'll give you a tiny weyr beside your worst enemy." She muttered
to L'pin under her breath with a wink.

Spreading the maps out on the desk, Chaysea had the corner of each
marked with what level of the Weyr it was located in. Of course,
larger dragons usually were restricted to the lower levels since that
was where the larger weyrs were. There were a few scattered among the
mid and high levels, but not many.

R'nar had one main request, and that was that he be as far away from
the Weyrbowl as possibly, the idea of having some peace and quiet
suited him just fine.

"I could provide some ideas of people to not pair up," he joked.

L'pin waved over the first group. "These are marked by size, so don't
go hogging anything you won't fit into."

"Does that mean I can't swipe his weyr?" A'vel asked, pointing at
R'nar and giving a little smile.

"Not unless you want Iorath sitting on Tsogath's head." R'nar shot
back, humor lighting his black eyes.

Chaysea smiled at the banter among the Weyrlings, it was certainly a
more peaceful group than some of the ones they'd had in the past. "Do
you have a preference, R'nar?" It was impossible not to see the
resemblance between the young bronzerider and his mother, the
Weyrwoman.

R'nar shrugged as he looked over the lower level weyrs available,
"Something that doesn't get much foot traffic. What about this one, on
the northwest face." It didn't have an ocean view, and neither was it
close to the Weyrbowl, both of which were just fine in his opinion.

"As long as you're a fan of long walks to breakfast, it's yours."
Chaysea said, and when the Weyrling nodded she jotted his name down in
that space. "Next."

}:I would like that. We could play,:{ Tsogath cheeped to Iorath and
his rider. A'vel coughed slightly at the image. At least she wasn't
old enough to be meaning this is any other way...

He tried to cover his embarrassment by stepping up to look at the
chart. The green weyrs were usually a little bit higher up. He would
have liked a sea view but he remembered they weren't supposed to live
that far up yet. So he looked over and found one midway up the cliff,
close to the Lower Caverns enterance. "How about this one?"

Chaysea scribbled his name in the spot with her loopy handwriting, "You
got it."

"Oh good, you're close to the Lower Caverns, you can bring me lunch."
R'nar elbowed A'vel.
A'vel grinned back at the young bronzerider, enjoying the unexpected
rapport. "Sure, if you ask nicely."

"Boys, can you move for the next weyrling?" L'pin asked.

"Right." A'vel stepped out of the way of the next group, which
consisted of a couple of blueriders.

"They're either going to be good friends or unable to stand each other
by the end of weyrlinghood," L'pin observed to Chaysea.

"Hopefully the former, they could both use a good friend," Chaysea said,
briefly glancing at the two boys as they left.
