D'hol

D'hol gathered the hides from the meeting table as people began to
filter out, continuing on to drills, sweeps or whatever else they had
planned for the day. It had gone smoothly enough, except for one
stubborn new bronze transfer. The rider M'orl, almost his own age, had
began arguing against N'vanik's drill formations in favor of the ones
he had previously used at his former Weyr. D'hol, as his new
Wingleader, had had to dress him down when he'd gotten a bit too
volatile.

He knew that any new bronzerider would feel the need to make his mark
at a Weyr, but there was a limit. For all of his own personal feelings
about N'vanik, for appearances sake, he had to back the Weyrleader's
decisions regarding Threadfall. He shook his head at the thought.
Besides, those old formations left too many gaps. He glanced up to see
N'vanik looking at him. "Yes?"

"That was an eloquent defense."

"He was in the wrong." D'hol stated simply. "You lead in a Fall. M'orl
will have to get used to that."

N'vanik's lips tilted up. "A bronzerider with strong opinions. How did
we end up with one of those? They're so rare."

D'hol arched a brow and then very slowly, his lips lifted in a similar
smile. "Seems like you're cursed with them."

"I'd trade them for quiet, obedient bronzeriders, but then things
might get dull around here."

That made D'hol's brows raise. "Could you imagine yourself quiet or obedient?"

"Only after a massive head injury." Although not that long ago,
N'vanik couldn't have imagined himself truly happy or well-liked. But
obedient was another matter.

That brought a snort of amusement from D'hol, but he got back to the
subject at hand. "Most likely this won't be the first time I'll have
to speak to M'orl. He strikes me as the type to not change his mind."

N'vanik nodded. "Yeah, probably not. Maybe he'll ease up when he sees
how things work here."

"Perhaps." D'hol didn't sound as though he believed M'orl would. "I'll
keep a good eye and ear on the man to make sure he doesn't stir
trouble." He gave a soft snort.

"Thank you." N'vanik didn't want to point out how civil D'hol was
being in case that set him off.

D'hol looked up from his hides and studied N'vanik for a moment. "No
matter what my personal feelings are about you, N'vanik, they are
personal and not related to your position or status. The Weyr can't
afford open dissent in the ranks, especially with the situation
between the Holds and the Weyr at present." He folded the hides. "If
M'orl has a personal issue with you, then he should take it up
privately and not in front of others and certainly not in front of the
wings."

N'vanik couldn't resist poking at him a little. "How kind of you not
to point out the situation with the Holds is my fault."

His brows quirked upwards. "As I see it, it isn't. I don't see how you
could have behaved differently with the boy." He paused. "Granted, the
boy does have a temper, and perhaps he could have managed the
situation better, but I can't say that I wouldn't have beaten the
whershit out of that guard in the same situation." He tapped his
fingers against the hides, then gave a half shrug. "No, I would say
the tension is from the Holders no fault but their own."

"I gotta say I'm surprised. I thought you'd take Corowal's side on
this. Or at least think J'ackt should've been punished more." Then
again D'hol was one to follow the letter of the law, not the spirit.

D'hol blinked at him. "No. I'm a Weyr man through and through. I
thought the punishment appropriate considering the circumstances."

"The punishment was more Cyradis's idea than mine, but I agreed with
her." Her support and understanding of J'ackt was a key part of how
they'd become friends.

Bringing up Cyradis was a touchy thing, but D'hol let it slide by
without more than a quirk of his eyebrow. "As did I."

N'vanik snorted. "Better watch out. I might start thinking you're reasonable."

Letting loose a long slow breath, D'hol laid down the hides.
"Depending on the situation, I can be very reasonable."

**And very _un_reasonable depending on the situation,** N'vanik
thought. He decided to change the subject. "Got your eye on any of the
new weyrlings yet?"

D'hol shook his head, visibly relaxing with the change in subject .
"None of them have really stood out so far, to be honest."

"Fair enough." The Weyrleader nodded, mouth curving into a smile. "I
have a bad habit of picking favorites."

"I know." D'hol's response was brief, but he looked up. "I do question
whether it's a good idea to put J'ackt in your wing after his tenure
with Cyradis. Perhaps you're too close to the boy."

"I've considered it, but I still think having him in my Wing is the
best choice. He has issues with authority and we've built up trust. I
don't want to set him up for failure by giving him a different
Wingleader." And in any case, N'vanik wouldn't put J'ackt in D'hol's
Wing. That was sure to be a disaster.

D'hol considered that, then nodded. "Perhaps that's what he needs."
That he didn't argue was most likely surprising, but he'd watched the
boy closely. "He doesn't seem to trust many people and Faranth knows
he'll need to trust his wingmates for him to stay alive."

"Exactly." Were they actually having a civil conversation?

D'hol gave a brief incline in with his head. "You know him better than
I do. I'm sure your judgement with him will be sound." He picked up
his files. "I am going to keep an eye out for a bronze to replace
T'nom. I need a decent Wingthird."

"So do I," N'vanik said with an amused snort. "Well I should let you get going."

"Indeed. Good evening." He nodded briskly and left the room, arms full
of the hides that he would have to go over after dinner.
