Despite numerous visitors R'enh had spent much of the last couple of
days alone other than the other injured and healers. He'd had his
visitors, Kapera and Aishara came by, of course. As had N'vanik and
despite the Weyrleader's friendship, that visit had been an
uncomfortable experience for them both. Especially since their last
conversation had all but foretold his injury.
~~~Flashback~~~
Hours he'd spent with Saibra yet even though they'd slept he didn't
feel refreshed. He was too many places at once and his memory wasn't
keeping up with when he was supposed to be.
So R'enh ended up back at Dolphin cove too soon and even though he
returned to Dolphin Cove after the meeting he'd had with N'vanik, he
found himself walking down the passage toward his Weyr when he saw
himself coming the other way. Startled he dodged into a side passage.
Covering his face with his hands and then rubbed his eyes.
"Didn't I _just_ see you at the other end of the hall?"
"N'vank!" R'enh visibly reacted and looked more than a little guilty.
"I don't think so," he denied with a shake of his head.
The Weyrleader did not look pleased at all. "You said you could handle
this." N'vanik had agreed to look the other way for now but had warned
R'enh there would be consequences later. If R'enh was making mistakes,
though, these little baby-making jaunts were over.
"I can," R'enh said firmly, "I just got my times a little crossed and
got back too soon." He shook his head and pulled the note out of his
pocket. Unfolding it he slumped against the wall before handing it to
his friend and Weyrleader. "There I'm off by what half a candlemark?"
"And you're exhausted," N'vanik said with barely a glance at the note.
"Shows that much does it?" R'enh rubbed the back of his neck with one hand.
"You need to stop R'enh."
"When she catches," he returned. "Then I can rest." The response was
much the same as the one he'd given Saibra her self when she'd
remarked on his seeming exhaustion. Alright, real exhaustion. "I'll
be fine, I just won't try to shave it so close. Alright?"
N'vanik studied him for a moment. "You want a baby with her so bad
it's worth dying for?"
'Fair question,' he thought about it for a moment. "Well, when you put
it that way." He half smiled and shook his head. "I'm being a bit
short sighted?"
"I don't get what the rush is." And he didn't understand why R'enh was
being so reckless.
"Yeah, I know." He shrugged. "It would have been a whole lot more
convenient if she'd decided this when she was still at Dolphin Cove.
Wouldn't it?"
"Why now?"
"I don't know," R'enh shook his head. "Maybe it has something to do
with how I think we feel about each other? Anyway, I know I didn't
know her well or love her back then." He pushed off the wall and faced
his friend. "You're right," he said. "But why do you have to ask all
the hard questions without a drink in your hand?"
"Should we fix that?" N'vanik asked with a bit more of his usual
humor. He wasn't mad at R'enh for breaking the rules, he was worried
about his friend getting hurt. Or worse.
"I think it would be far more pleasant than hiding here," R'enh smiled.
~~~End Flashback~~~
Maybe it was just a coincidence but he hadn't heard anything from
Saibra, nor could he get any information out of Mnoranth which was
very strange. The flavor of his responses were very much like.... like
he was under the influence of gold dragon orders. Finally out of the
half awake fellis drowned dreams he focused on what he wanted to know.
**Where is Chioneth's**
}:At Dragonsfall:{ came the terse reply.
**Really? I could have guessed that much. Is something wrong?**
Mnoranth felt distinctly uncomfortable. }:Her's is with healers but
won't allow us to know why.:{
"What?" R'enh tried to lurch out of bed and ended up sprawled on the
floor groaning in pain.
Healers found him there a moment later and got him back into bed.
